I'm humored with all the bands of today that claim to be musicians. This man has more talent than many of today's bands together. It's too bad there can't be more musicians like this...

No one should expect Steve Howe to play classical like Segovia, or any other genre like anyone else. The fact that he never took a lesson in his life and taught himself to play (which is why he uses such unique and unconventional fingerings), makes it all the more amazing that he plays the way he does. He is unique. One doesn't win Guitar Player's Magazine's Guitarist of the Year 10 years in a row for nothing.
@caroles1403 жыл бұрын
My recollection is that it was 5 years, after which the magazine created a Hall of Fame, and Howe was the first guitarist to be inducted. At the same time a maximum number of years was established for winning the best guitarist award, so others could have the opportunity to be elected.

I hear you. It's hilarious to hear people talk about the "greats" of this generation. But in reality they don't come close to the level of perfection Steve Howe has attained over the 40+ years he has been playing. I've yet to hear a piece as moving as "Mood For a Day" at any point in rock history.
@Thundergod12912 жыл бұрын
Mood For A Day has to be one of the best classical pieces in the last 50 years. And he seems to play it so effortlessly. And Steve is completely self taught and plays almost everything by ear. Coming from a musical family must have helped but he has such a distinct sound and style...I could go on and on...Suffice it to say he is one of the most diverse and original guitarists of our time.

Mood for a Day is my favourite Yes song. That's really orgasmic to play :)

I had the opportunity to see him in the Tampa theatre. He was amazing. The classical stuff was mind bogling. I have been a Yes fan since 1978, and he was right on. I would gladdly pay another $40 anyday to see him with just an acoustic for an hour or 2 and a six pack. It was awsome.

Steve Howe is a great musician.. I don't know (or care) if he is classically trained or otherwise... His performances (recorded) provided me with joy and hope in times of my life when things were really bad. Thats what musicians do for other people.. and at that he is truly great.

Holy mother of God! Steve Howe did this standing up! I couldn't do this sitting down practicing every day for thirty years! I can only watch, listen, and marvel at true genius. What a gift to the world! 🌎

February, 2019 Amazed at the respect that the audience shows Steve Howe while playing.....Quiet and enjoying every single note....It never ceases to amaze me ( because I was of the '70's, and so familiar with their work ) that within a note or two; The audience seems to know WHAT song is being performed !!

Steve Howe is so modest mannered... not many guitarists that have that going for them. It reflects in his style... so refined so tame; a rare quality. It is a trait that allows for such amazing music to be produced.
@pschlehr16 жыл бұрын
The thing about Howe that I have most admired is his ability to play in so many styles and to play them all so well. He transcends the idea of musical genre, if you will. He simply plays and he plays everything amazingly well and professionally. Lots of faster guitarists than Steve, but none with the kind of musical depth and breadth he possesses.

People always get into the debate about who is the 'best' and a futile argument never ends. I'll just say Steve Howe is a top class guitarist.
@gregoriopalofuego98085 жыл бұрын
Well, it was Jimi Hendrix. The debate ends there. Nobody better, than Jimi. He was the greatest electric guitarist of all time. Watch Jimi live at Woodstock, that historic Monday morning, August 18th, 1969. That should remove any doubt on who is/was the best ever. But, my goodness, Steve Howe is just magnificent. I have seen Yes live, up close many times, and Mood For A Day is my favorite, then Wurm in Starship Trooper. Yes, quite a life we've had. Yes, indeed... 🎵🎸🎵

@@gregoriopalofuego9808 The debate doesn’t end there. The title of best guitarist is completely opinion based. Personally I don’t think Jimi holds a candle to Steve. Not to say jimi isn’t one of the all time greats, because there’s no argument about that, but steve is just as versatile as guitarists come, being able to range from heavy progressive improvisation to a lute concerto to chet atkins-style picking. Clearly he’s my all time favorite.

Erik, I feel the same way about Steve as you do; he taught me how to fly. One of the first pieces I learned to play in high school was "Mood for a Day." At the time, I thought it was one of the loveliest guitar pieces I had ever heard and I still feel that way today. Steve continues to amaze, mystify and uplift me with his musicianship, his passion and his creativity. He ranks among the greatest guitarists of all time, along with Chet Atkins, John McLaughlin and Andres Segovia

Steve is one of my idols. This is a great combo of 2 great pieces played by him. This clip is from Amsterdam and it shows that European audience can actually listen and not interrupt. I saw YES 6 times in the last 6 years in Chicago, USA and every time Steve was playing his acoustic pieces people would yell his name - like he doesn't know it, they whistled, screamed etc. It was horrible. His playing is great though and I admire him for what he's done in music world.

@muzikislife9 I totally agree! Given the same piece of music, a classically trained guitarist will be pleased by different sounds compared to the rock guitarist (or jazz guitarist, etc.). Thus, there will be two different "playings" of the piece; neither necessarily "incorrect". Howe's interpretation of the concerto is acoustically superb.

Alex Lifeson, Robert Fripp, Martin Barre (of Jethro Tull), even guys like Omar Rodriguez-Lopez, and especially Steve Howe never get the fame and respect they deserve. Progressive style rock/fusion guitar is the most amazing and innovative thing to happen to music in the last 50 years. Prog is too loud for the jazz crowd, and too wierd for the casual listener of rock. But any real musician can appreciate the techniques and tonal innovations of these guys.

@Fist2112 Well said. Steve Howe is the reason that I switched from steel string to classical guitar about fifteen years ago. Steve's "Mood For A Day" was one of the songs that drove me nuts trying to learn when I was coming up as a young musician. Still can't play it to this day, but I appreciate his playing. Steve is one of the best guitarist in any genre of music. We get caught up sometimes in trying to categorize people and it's not fair. Everyone brings their unique personality to music.
