Steve Howe won guitarist of the year so many times in one of the music polls in the 1970s that they retired him. Then punk happened and the music press turned on progressive rock. He's a phenomenally versatile guitarist (rock, classic, flamenco, pedal steel) and solid composer.

Huge Steve Howe fan and this is my first viewing of this and I LOVE it. Great versions of both of these tunes...the Vivaldi piece is faster, quicker tempo and slightly different arrangement (?) than on the solo effort but is GREAT. Check it out on his The Steve Howe Album which is a fantastic album...I'm constantly preach on YT about the band members solo albums that came out in 1976 (I think they ALL had a solo release that year ? maybe I'm wrong)...they're all (IMO) as good as the band albums and to believe, around that time, that the group was putting out their fabulous Yes albums AND the solo albums also is just mind numbingly cool. Ok I'l stop gushing now...😍

As much as I love Steve Howe for his blending of rock and classical inspiring many guitarists like me to appreciate,l earn and play classical pieces like this Vivaldi, his abilities in the world of classical pieces are only fair. Student level really. It may sound beautiful, impressive and difficult, but his technique is actually a bit sloppy as he does not devote the kind of practice needed to play pieces like this Vivaldi properly. He of course does a better job with his own Mood for a Day composition which he has continued to play for over 40 years. Once you go down this rabbit hole, you realize how much there is to master in even the easier pieces. His real value is in exposing his listeners to new horizons of music that have shaped and inspired all western musical forms we know today!
@donaldanderson6604Ай бұрын
As Steve's biggest fan, and a classical guitarist, I have to agree. If you'd been to a David Russell or Sean Shibe concert, you'd know the difference. Having said that, I did once sit across the aisle from him at a John Williams recital. Mood for a Day was spot on. It's the reason I started classical.
@michaeledmondson4385Ай бұрын
Was thinking the same thing. This is a piece you would play on a junior recital in a decent college guitar program, and he's not really playing it that well. It is fantastic that he is bringing this music to the masses. I hope that people seek out more of it and hear some real masters of classical guitar.
@ronwhitfield8872Ай бұрын
My thoughts exactly. A huge YES fan, but I have heard WAY better classical guitarists. Good ….but not great…
@skierpage21 күн бұрын
Yes, and the same is true on pedal steel, and flamenco, and he's no Guthrie Govan on electric guitar. But Steve Howe's versatility and compositions make him one of the greatest. His playing in the middle of "To Be Over" off _Relayer_ features all of this and is perfection.
@WONDERSR20 күн бұрын
@davin6175 That's a bit harsh - firstly he's standing up playing this piece, which is always going to be more difficult than the classic position sitting down with his left leg supported, and secondly Steve was playing it repeatedly, night after night, on that tour... so give the guy a break.
