I’m only a university student even I can see that it should be relatively simple. It’s simply one table with the standard user table and one table for the call log, which links to the user table using its primary key. I could create the back end in about 30 minutes. Design and mobile apps are not my strong suit, but I can’t see how he could have spent that sort of money unless someone was taking him for a ride.

@@tonydarcy7475 No it is not. They only show a fraction of the pitch which takes usually more than an hour. BYOD is and was a huge problem at the time and I'm pretty sure this app would solve severe Information Security (IS) threads for big companies. Building a solution aiming to solve these issues is expensive and complex, it is not a simple RDB. Nevertheless, regardless of how complex this app should be, in my opinion, half a million is too much for what is proposed especially for companies with IS Policies and with mobiles already having dual SIM card at the time.

Developing this app shouldn't cost more than 10k$ and somehow he spent 450k either he is pretty dumb and got scammed or he scammed his investors. His newest company that is already 3 years old doesn't even have a finished website and he used a Website builder to create it :D. Says enough about how well the business is doing.

Steve's comments were the best for impact, and getting straight to the point, but credit to Janine for the most insightful. "There are so many apps on my phone... and then for me to pay you.. it's not a lot, but it's a chipping away". I saw this episode on the TV a few years back and that stuck with me, and is my reaction whenever I have a "great idea" for an app, or someone tells me of their "great idea". As I recall from the episode, after saying "so many apps on my phone" she added "and I don't know what half of them are", which has been edited out. That's an image we can all relate to. I also picture all those developers behind each of those apps somehow believing their product, like Robbie here.

This is incredibly common. People spend years and mortgage their houses because they fall in love in an idea, without testing it. Tim Ferriss talks about it, first do some metrics and establish market need. Perhaps do an MVP cheaply and quickly. Another issue is people are delusional and can't see it, they refuse to do any metrics. It all how they "feel". We live in a sad world now where how people "feel" is somehow reflection of reality, not data, not real science. We can see it in politics, in business, everywhere.
@geofreyr
@geofreyr 3 жыл бұрын
@@johns4651 I dunno, I think so-called market research is a bit pointless in many cases, what does it entail? proposing the idea to 100 people? guarantee they'd all probably nod in agreement that it was a good idea, right? But then never use it anyway. I think the only way is a cheap MVP, ie, you just have to risk 20-odd k in dev time to get something basic up and try to get some people to use it, somehow, and even then it's still hard. For every success there's a ton of failures, like this one. Harsh way to learn. So many people these days are trying to be the next super rich entrepreneur.

I have been a software developer for 4.5 years (albeit not in the mobile app space) and developed some pretty complex applications for running fluid dynamic simulations and geometry processing. I truly do not understand these entrepreneurs on shark tank and dragons den claiming to have spent half a million or million to develop a simple mobile app. If you are a programmer, it would take a couple of months to put it together. If you hire a few people to do it, still it shouldn't cost this much. Are software developers this expensive in Australia and UK ? I am genuinely curious.

To be honest, saying a backend is worth hundreds of thousands because it's convoluted and complex is a huge red flag. If someone can come to me and show they achieve something with a simple and elegant backend, I'll be impressed. If they solve it with something convoluted and complex, that just scares me that it will break or have huge maintenance costs in the future.

I watch Shark Tank shows from several countries, never miss an episode. This is one of if not the worst concept I have ever seen. It's true what one of the sharks said. A decade ago businesses stopped worrying about this and just gave employees a fixed monthly payment to use their own phones. I think this guy may have just come out of a coma or something. The day flat mobile rates became a thing this became useless. I also don't know even taking this out of the equation, how the fuck he spent almost 500 k AUD on this. I really feel as bad as one can for a fool and his money but he clearly needed to learn this lesson. This was like watching a car accident in slow motion knowing that the injuries will be horrific. I dunno. Back in the days when there wasn't those mobile-contracts that just were "Pay X amount and get as much time as you need" there was already the possibility to have 2 Numbers on your phone, one for buisness and one for private. My dad had a phone like this in the 90s. Cost the company basically nothing, solved the problem he proposes to solve way cheaper. Never a good sign, when you try to solve a problem from 2 decades ago, that was already solved in a more effective way.

With unlimited call plans, I could see this being a thing for employees that are salaried and required to do 40-45 hour work weeks. If they ever take a phone call that is work-related, outside the realm of typical 9-5 work hours for regular employees, it would serve a purpose to prove those 2 hours with 5-minute calls here and there to companies that really love to micromanage (I've been in two so know there are people out there that would love to shove this in a bosses face that I was "off the clock", but still took a work-related call). However, it would only be a $2.99 phone app and that's it. At least by then, he could have the potential of making back his initial investment without doing much except collect passive income because it was supposedly a fully developed app and not a prototype. The business model sucked, then, and it still sucks now, but there was a market for it even at that time that could've made it a $4.99 app.

Everyone I know in IT just use their personal phone. This seems like a 90s problem.

This app is stupid, plans with unlimited calls and texts are ubiquitous, so it doesn't matter if it's a work call or a personal call, you're paying the same no matter what. And this guy wants to charge $4 a month and call it a saving?

No app should cost $450,000 The developers saw that dude coming!

and your software engineering degree is from where? Plenty of apps cost far far more than that to develop and maintain. THIS app should not have cost that.

@@jhoughjr1 Lol, you absolutely NO idea what I do for a living. No one uses a Waterfall method of development anymore. Agile is the standard to control costs and identify issues before they snowball into a massive avalanche of problems. Backend systems developed to support apps like servers, databases, networks to complete their functions can cost considerably, but once again, this is added in stages as the app creators market develops. No reputable software development company would stick a creator with a $450,000 bill for the general creation of an app ie. wireframing, coding, stressing, modification...etc. And believe me, I left a LOT of information out. Stop volunteering your ignorance on a 9 month old post. Everyone has moved on and nobody gives a shit.

I’m a developer and could make the same app or even better for less than 10% he wasted. Why would someone pay $4 for this seriously? And you do know if it’s a good idea Apple and Google would just copy and make it as a default in their OS
