I saw him with John Mayer his solo spot was the best solo I’ve ever heard in my life and I’ve seen all the best. The sound of his drums and the way he tuned his drums is otherworldly. Fucking groove personified!!

Over and over again Steve talks of his parents, their support and especially his father. That is so, so important. More than being a great drummer, he is a great son. Guys, if you are a father, be that first, drums can come second, because you may be raising the next truly great one.

'There's only one me.' That is so important for any musician (or person) to understand about themselves and embrace with pride and confidence. Also, 'You have to be honest with yourself; what are your shortcomings?' And 'good versus famous'. But what Mr. Jordan reminds us is that there is a deep history of listening, learning and experience behind that groove of his, which while appearing to be simple and straightforward is extremely deep because along the way he also developed his musicality. Also great to see so many jazz players - Sonny Payne, Shelly Manne, Art Blakey, Ben Riley etc. - mentioned. Too many drummers overlook the art of playing and simply rush to develop their craft. Art and craft are two different things. A player can learn from jazz, even if they are a rock player (or a drummer without genre, as Jordan suggests). John Bonham and Sabbath's Bill Ward were big jazz fans. Ditto Gadd and Colaiuta. Another fine interview Dom.

Steve represents the very best of musicianship. He's is deeply engaging and thoughtful in his approach. His beat and groove are astonishing, but the thing that brings to the gig is his tremendous heart and compassion. He was the first drummer I idolized, much as he did with Ringo. I am so grateful for his contributions to our culture.

I've always dug his playing. One thing I love about KZbin is rediscovering certain things, and time to time, I reference back to the early- mid '80's Dave Letterman Shows just to watch and listen to that band's clips. I still think those original opening theme tunes that band wrote for the show were Soo damn cool!. Best ones ever written for that show! Along with some of the newer vids up of him for VIc Firth, Yamaha/ Paiste, Clinics, playing old K's etc.

yes - growing up in NYC - I can relate.. back in the day every night there was a great musician playing somewhere, where it was the Blue Note, SOBs, CBGBs, Carnegie Hall, The Apollo, Madison Square Garden,,, and on and on... all kinds of great music... then DJ shit came along. Nothing like live music. Steve is awesome !

What a great interview. Very great information from Steve. I like his point about woodshedding even after you think you have "made" it. Hubert Sumlin was fired by Howlin Wolf. He told him he needed to go work on his playing and find his true style. That was just tough love from Howlin Wolf. Hubert came back and was an integral part to Howlin Wolf's band. He respected Howlin Wolf for that for the rest of his playing days with him. Steve Jordan is giving us that same advice.

Amazing. Great stuff. As a recent drummer at 25, and a lifelong on again off again muscian with guitar, small bands with friends, and high school orchestra, and now playing with musicians in New York City, this is a huge aspiration. Trying to make the plunge into a music business is tough enough, but being old enough to know how crazy the idea is now, this sort of story gives me a lot of hope. Because from what I gathered about what Jordan said, he's not successful because he's the most talented or best musician, but because he puts his best on the line constantly, tests and pushes himself to grow, puts the sake of the music first before his own pride, and uses his resources like they're going out of style. His playing is a huge influence on me, I enjoy his groove like no other, and am inspired to put in the time and effort and do what it takes to "be good". Thank you Dom & company for making this happen.

You school me about drumming I’ll school you about history. New York liberals you got a love him I wasn’t going to get political until he made that ridiculous comment.
