Truly an amazing performance. Steve Lawrence is probably the best singer of the 20th century. One of Sinatra's favorites as well. You don't find very many singers like Steve in the 21st century. Let's add Edie to the mix and you have a super powerhouse! What a perfect match. I miss the days of real performers and Ed Sullivan. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

One of my favorite singers, singing one of my favorites of his recordings. I've heard him do it live several times, & Steve's performance was always breathtaking. On this one, I thought he was lip-synching his magnificent recording at first, but this is definitely yet another live & incredible example of his beautiful & powerful voice!! Among the very best of the crooners. Eydie was just as talented on her own, & together, they were pure magic!!! Best nightclub act in the country for a whole lot of years, too!!!

Steve and Eydie were both wonderful performers as singles, But... the real magic happened when they worked together... You could see how they adored each other and it just made the audience very happy indeed

Steve was a talented singer but Eydie for me at least either performing solo or with Steve always an amazing performance.

They were no less magical than when they sang solo, even much moreso for me because their individual voices stood out, and the listener's attention was undivided.

I was only a child when he sang on the show, but my parents watched the Ed Sullivsn show often. Steve also sang the hit song, A portrait of my love, a classic. He appeared on a number of TV shows, and was a regular for a few seasons on the Carroll Burnett show.

Was a big fan of Steve and Edie. Great singers, great performers, and likable. I think their light, breezy ways made people sometimes overlook what seriously great talents they were.

Here is some background on this song which was written by Leo Fuld (a singer who was affectionally known as the King of Yiddish Popular Music) and Sonny Miller in 1949. From "Secondhand Songs": When performing in Paris, Fuld visited a little Yiddish night club where he heard a survivor of the Warsaw Ghetto sing a song which touched him deeply; "Vu ahin zol ikh geyn?". He was so impressed that he wanted to record his own version. Upon returning to England he wrote the English lyrics and recorded it. Fuld made it a million-seller and later it was recorded by a few dozen others: Ray Charles, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Nat King Cole, Miriam Makeba, etc. "Where Can I Go" by Steve Lawrence was released as a single with "Last Night I Made a Little Girl Cry" on the other side. Both sides bubbled under the charts, "Where Can I Go" at 106 under the Cash Box Top 100.

I couldn't place what language Steve Lawrence switched to for several phrases. Since he is Yiddish I now understand why he sounded so authentic and confident when singing in his own language. Thanks for the information. I would think that the songwriter would have been credited in the description, but this was not the case. Thanks for saving us who are interested having to Google to find out.👏👍

This song commemorates the sufferings of the Jewish people for centuries. It arises from the horrors of the Holocaust. The lyrics imply two possibilities: the narrator is dying, and is rejoining his dead family members, or, on a very positive note, the narrator is going to the newly established Jewish homeland, Israel, the actual land where the Jews once lived, before the Babylonian captivity and exile, before the Diaspora.

"MUSIC SO GLORIOUS, POWERFUL AND PROFOUND THAT IT COULD CREATE A SOUL UNDER THE RIBS OF DEATH!" John Milton SEVERAL COMMENTERS REFERRED TO STEVE LAWRENCE IN THE PAST TENSE. HE IS STILL ALIVE, AGED 88, BUT UNFORTUNATELY SUFFERING FROM EITHER DIMENTIA OR ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE.😢 A CONSUMMATE PROFESSIONAL WITH THE POWER OF AN OPERA SINGER, HE WAS REALLY "SINGING FROM THE MOUNTAINTOP" ON THIS SONG, WHICH WAS NEW TO ME. STEVE LAWRENCE, VIC DAMONE, AL MARTINO, JACK JONES, JOHNNY MATHIS, JACKIE WILSON, TONY WILLIAMS, ( of "The Platters") FRANKIE LAINE, ROBERT GOULET, TONY BENNETT GORDON MACRAE, JERRY VALE, HARVE PRESNELL, ENGELBERT HUMPERDINCK AND MARIO LANZA WERE THE TOP POP MALE VOCALISTS WHO IN MY BOOK HAD THE "PIPES" TO NAIL A DRAMATIC, "SHOW-STOPPING" TOUR DE FORCE SHOWPIECE LIKE THIS. BUT JUST AS CLOSE TO MY HEART ARE THE VOCALISTS WHO WERE JUST AS GREAT IN THEIR OWN WAY, WHO SANG IN A GENTLER, ROMANTIC BALADEER STYLE, MY FAVORITES BEING THE POP AND COUNTRY SINGERS: JOHNNY TILLOTSON, DEAN MARTIN, RAY PRICE, NAT "KING" COLE, JIM REEVES, JOHNNY DESMOND, PAT BOONE, CHARLIE PRIDE, ROY DRUSKY, FARON YOUNG, JOHNNY DUNCAN, JERRY WALLACE, THE EVERLY BEOTHERS, BOBBY LEWIS, (The country singer), BILLY WALKER, JERRY LEE LEWIS (Pop and country only) WARNER MACK, JOHNNY HORTON, FREDDIE HART, RICK NELSON, NAT STUCKEY, DICK HAYMES, JOHNNY HARTMAN, BOBBY HATFIELD, BILLY ECKSTEIN, MARTY ROBBINS, GENE PITNEY, DEL RREVES, CONWAY TWITTY, BOBBY VEE, DICK ST. JOHN (of "Dick and Dee Dee), BOBBY LORD, WAYNE KEMP, BROOK BENTON, VINCE HILL, JOHN GARY, JACK GREENE, WEBB PIERCE, SLIM WHITMAN, JOHNNY DARRELL, SAM COOKE, DAVID ROGERS, GENE AUTRY, JULIUS LA ROSA AND CLAUDE GRAY. AND LASTLY, ELVIS PRESLEY, (Pop, country and Gospel only.) HE COULD OBVIOUSLY BELT OUT A SONG AS POWERFULLY AS ANY OF MY FAVORITES IN THE FIRST GROUP, BUT HE DIDN'T SOUND GOOD TO ME WHEN HE DID SO.

Just a few days ago, a hoax spread on the Internet about the death of this great artist, who today, at 88 years old, remains retired from the stage, affected by Alzheimer's disease. Unfortunately, it seems that to make circulating false rumors about the deaths of celebrities is becoming fashionable again, since in the last few hours the false rumor about Harrison Ford has also circulated. Although both were great soloists, it is difficult to talk about Mr. Lawrence without talking about his eternal companion, both sentimental and artistic, Eydie Gorme, whom we enjoyed in one of his performances on the Show a few weeks ago. Surely there is no singers/acting couple who has accumulated as many Emmy and Grammy awards as them or is as loved by the public. Sinatra himself, with whom they toured for a whole year, said of them "Steve and Eydie represent everything good about performers and the interpretation of a song, they are the best." In short, a luxury to have them in the Show.
