Great stuff, I really like this. The harmonies and timbres on some of the chords just pop out unexpectedly massive. Futuristic and ancient at the same time.

They play microtonal stuff. Lehman is among the very few jazz musicians who knows about and uses the techniques of "Spectral music". It's may be a good idea to isten to Gerard Grisey "Partiels" for example.

The more you listen to this fine record the more you'd love to see them live. Lehman must have long loved and studied Blue Note progressive '60s jazz (Andrew Hill!).

It's the natural instinct of the bleeding-edge innovator to push the limits and rules of tonality. We know that there are no true rules to tonality, and we leave it up to those to whom it comes naturally to break new grounds. It might not sound great now, but - as history has always supported - in some centuries, it'll sound like a nursery rhyme. It's clearly not *just* random - if that were true, how would all of the players keep in synchronized rhythm with each other? And they are in tune.

What the hell is he doing in here? I can't figure it out but it's great.

Basically, he’s switching time signatures of each grove and each part is playing a different subdivision of that meter while the drums are playing each part on a different part of the kit. The scale that is being played Is the harmonic series of the vibraphone

This is so stupid. It sounds like random notes to me. They don't even play in tune.
