Steve was a great performer and a much better musician than he thought that he really was. Fantastic guitarrist and of course one of the greatest vocalists of his generation. His energy on stage was matchless. Rip my friend 😢

Met the man himself a few times, before and after gigs during the Packet Of Three years in and around Portsmouth. Having a couple of drinks, sharing a few joints, and most importantly, having a bloody good chuckle. His laugh was so infectious, a shining Cockney diamond and total gentleman.

We used to follow steve around the london pub circuit, i met and spoke with him several times, such a talent and such a down to earth guy. I've seen over a thousand bands, (stopped counting at 1000) , Steve's the best live act ever. I named my son after him. God bless you Stevie.

So great to see Steve Marriott in a video cranking out rock in a small club , obviously loud as hell . Back in the early 70's , Humble Pie was huge and the double LP ' Rocking the Filmore ' remains one of the all time greatest live rock records ever recorded . When I saw him live at Winterland in San Francisco , he had the crowd in the palm of his hand . Everybody knew we were watching a world class performer , at the top of his game . When the show was over , the crowd's ears were ringing and everyone looked exhausted but happy . Humble Pie was that great . When Steve played in Palo Alto during the 80's , I had a chance to go on his tour bus for a quick chat . Other fans were getting autographs , but I just wanted to say hi and thank him for all the good music . He couldn't have been nicer , and we had a good little talk . Miss him a lot .

@ Gordon. I only saw Stevie and Pkt of 3 once at the Half Moon Pub in Putney London 1987 approx 1 month after I immigrated from New Zealand. Took some great close up photos and recorded the audio of the gig. Will post in the next few days

Yes please post it. I saw him with Humble Pie in 1973 and also 74 at the Odeon in Birmingham with and without the Blackberries. Then I saw him with the "Official Receivers", what a fantastic band, at the Oval Cricketers in 1987. Finally with the Packet of 3 at the Half Moon in January or February 1991 when Peter Frampton joined them for a couple of numbers. This was just a couple of months before the tragic fire 🔥 at Steve's cottage which took his life. 🙏

@@66putojoevrsaalgpt Yeah I am just digitizing it right now, and it sounds pretty good. Its so funny listening to Steve swearing at the crowd and taking the piss. Should be up in a couple of hours or so, but I would also like to upload some photos I took on the night and include them inbetween songs. I would have to use a different software though and this would take time, so I might just stay with the tried and trusted in the meantime .And the Cricketers Oval??? Yeah I used to frequent that venue too with the likes of The Groundhogs. Man, Climax Blues Band etc. Those were the days when legendary 60s figures would play for a pittance (Sometimes free) while they were still very relevant. Different story today

I worked with a bloke who accidently came across Steve playing a gig in Blackpool one day on his jolly from work. He was with his missus and kids and walked past a bar/club in blackpool with a small sign outside saying Steve marriott live tonight! Intrigued he went back that night as he was a big fan of the small faces and hadn't heard of Steve for years and years. Low and behold he went in and the late great Steve was there and wasn't a tribute act like his missus mocked him about the gig. He said he was so close to him he could have touched him and in fact shook hands with him later that night. He said his ears rang for the full fortnight he was on holiday in Blackpool. 😂 Thing that struck him wasn't his legendary pipes but his guitar playing as there was only three of them but together sounded like a turbine at full knacker!

I actually saw Steve and Packet of THree at the legendary Half Moon Pub in Putney London 1987. I recorded the whole concert on a high quality cassette recorder and took some great photos of the legend. I will hopefully get it up in the next week

Went old Marquee in August '84 to see Johnny Thunders (from NY Dolls - great gig) and got a flyer w. all next concerts. It said, Steve Marriott and PoT playing a few days later, but I didn't know him! (I was too young to remember Small Faces and HUMBLE PIE, so I didn't care). Now I'm a fan, got most HP stuff on vynil, and still 'eat my hands' for having missed that concert...

This popped into my feed this morning, and man has it brought back some great memories! I was roadie/guitar tech for a local friend's band in Southern California, Harlin. Their first few gigs were at the legendary Golden Bear nightclub, situated directly across Pacific Coast Highway from the Huntington Beach pier, in 1985. Early the following year, the old Golden Bear building was ceased by the city of Huntington Beach, condemned, and quickly demolished, unfortunately. The club owner, Rick Babiracki, looked for a new establishment to provide great live music at, and one place he stumbled upon was a huge Asian-themed restaurant in nearby Santa Ana, CA, Kono Hawaii. I remember going there as a kid with my family every once in awhile for a "classy" version of Chinese food. The main dining room featured a huge stage that featured a large troupe of Polynesian dancers for your dining entertainment. In the summer of 1986, Rick contracted with the restaurant to be the venue for a number of concerts featuring a lot of his typical entertainers, usually names who "had been" big, or were on their way up. Our band, Harlin, was the latter. Rick contacted our band and asked if we'd do a couple of shows opening for "headliners" there. The first was Mitch Ryder & the Detroit Wheels, which was great. The 2nd was Steve Marriott & Packet of Three, but I think Rick had told us it was "Steve Marriott of Humble Pie", but all we heard was "Humble Pie". So that's how WE advertised it. Our manager bought a radio ad on major LA rock station 94.7 KMET that aired all week before the show, right during the drive home just after 5pm when most folks listen to the radio, stuck on LA freeways, bumper to bumper. Our ad announced that "Golden Bear presents Humble Pie at Kono Hawaii..." (Long snippets of "30 Days in the Hole" and "I Don't Need No Doctor" as the announcer gave the details)... "featuring Harlin" (short snippet of their self-produced demo single). The result was the tickets were completely sold out. Before the show, our manager and the promoters came and lectured that our band was the opening act, and would NOT to do an encore number after their set, regardless of audience response. Everyone agreed. Ok, on with the show... While Harlin were local darlings on the Hollywood Strip "hair-metal" live music scene, they were definitely NOT metal in any way. They were more like a slightly-heavier version of Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers. Hard enough to be "metal-friendly", but also very "Classic rock-friendly" as well. My point being that Humble Pie fans would easily enjoy and embrace Harlin's music. They did. The audience was on fire during Harlin's entire set. Then came their final song, their self-produced demo which had been featured on the "Local Music Show" on 95.5 KLOS, "Since You Left Me", the song which was normally played during their set's encore. Since they were not allowed an encore tonight, so it was simply the last song of their set. Now the stage was huge, incredibly wide. The only stage entrance was from a door directly in the center of the back, which was the dancers' dressing room on the other side. For whatever reason, our band was given the dressing room behind the stage, while Humble Pie took another down the hall. As guitar tech, one of my normal duties was that once they started their final song, that was my cue to "stow the spare guitars". Each of our players had a spare guitar on a stand onstage, which they could easily grab and switch to with my help in case of a broken string or electronic failure and continue their set without a hiccup. So, I grabbed the 2 spares from my side of the stage and brought them into the dressing room behind the stage, where the guitar cases were. As I came into the room, Steve and the Packet of Three were all sitting on a couch on the far wall. I probably looked a bit startled to see them there, but Steve gave a little nod and a friendly look, and I went about my business, in a bit of a hurry because my next job was to take the main guitars from our players as they came offstage. Steve watched me working, listening to our band play their best song, and said "It's great to hear a great young band playing straight-ahead rock like we always did." "Thanks." It was barely a stammer. Then the guitar solo was ending, and I had to get in position. I moved to the stage door, opened it, and got ready to accept the main axes as my boys came offstage. I was in the doorway, literally reaching for the guitar necks, when Steve suddenly pushed himself around me, gently shoving me back as he took my place in the doorway, effectively blocking anyone from coming through. He yelled out "Great goin', lads! Now go on out and give us another!!" I saw as everyone looked back toward the audience, who were definitely calling for an encore, our manager and the promoter were clearly visible overlooking the back of the club, and they were both shaking their heads "NO!". But little Steve Marriott had more clout, my boys went back out and played another one. As our band chilled down after their show, Steve and his boys hung with us and gave great appreciation for my buddies' music. Then Steve selected just 2 of our party to have special seats for their set. Our drummer and ME! He had 2 chairs on the side of the stage behind the main speakers, right where my station was during our band's set. We were 15-20 feet from Steve during his performance, and it was freaking amazing! More than once during guitar solos, he looked right over at us to make sure we were enjoying the show, played licks "just for us". Awesome AF! That's my memory of that evening. He was a little guy with a HUGE voice, and based on my limited exposure to him, he also seemed to have a huge heart and an undeniable love of music! When a friend asked me what I thought of him, my response was "He was a real gent." Steve Marriott is not the most famous person I've ever met, but I have ever-since treasured the memory of that evening as my favorite rock & roll moment in my life. I was deeply saddened when I heard of his tragic death. Thanks so much for posting this concert!

Steve normally known for his vocals but what a guitarist there only 3 in the band steve and jim leverton bass and fallon williams drums the performance sounds. Like there was about vsix in the band they where doing about 300 gigs. A year and you can tell gret stuff an

I saw them in 1985 in lamon house hotel in ireland. I was only 18 and probably didn't have full appreciation, still enjoyed it despite getting 2 punctures in my scooter on the way, had to push it the last 2 miles and borrow a wheel to get home. Night to remember. Real no frills fuckin sweaty blues...nearly as good as Tailor Swift!

Re the Beatles - I never cared. I think I could put a CD's worth of their Solo Songs-Cracker Box Palace, JET, JR's, Photograph, etc-but I still think Steve Marriott was the Shit. I'm so glad he & Pete had the chance to get it together again & enjoy the Music from a joined past that still kicks. He had that chest out, screaming & playing his guts out in what seemed like ease. I always liked the command of a Stage type of Presence when it's real. The Pretenders were a lot like Marriott: Small Faces, The Pie, 'is Packet of Three... Frampton explained how IF he'd waited for a Month longer to quit - he'd have been a little better financially for the timing re Rocking The Fillmore, but I think he did okay and last July (I think) he was still doing his paces- 3 hours and seated. The last thing he said to Frisco was "& I'm going to beat this thing with my leg!" I don't think he was saying he was going to rip it off & pound some guy in the ground with "the wet end" but I think it's a good thing for him to be playing. I'm thankful - I just wish I'd been able to catch The Pie at The Fillmore.🐄💨 Dingwalls 👍
