Born and raised in Sheffield, been here 59 years and never ever heard or knew about the 1oclock alarm! Bit of trivia. Did you know that Sheffield is the only city/town in the UK that has it's own 'Made in' label that's recognised by Parliament. Every one else has to use the label Made in UK or GB etc. 'Made in Sheffield' is known throughout the world!

Most of the building works you went past at the beginning is not for the old university but the Hallam University which used to be Sheffield Polytechnical College when I was at Sheffield University in the early 1980s. The paternoster lift in the old University Arts Building used to be a dare for students as to who could stay in as it went over the top...in those days students were told not to do this. Did you get to see the Cutlers Hall there?

Amazing to see my home city in a different light, and well bugger me 40 years I have lived here and I did not know there is the measure length at the side of the town hall, so I actually learnt something about my home city. Thanks for the great vlog and keep them coming.

The pub you showed isn’t actually that old, from memory it was built in the 19th century. There is however a very old pub in Sheffield, situated on Pond Hill about 5 minutes walk from The Crucible. It’s a timber-framed building dating from 1475, originally a hunting lodge it became an Inn in the early 1600s. It’s called The Old Queen’s Head, named after Mary Queen of Scots, who was held prisoner in Sheffield for 14 years (1570-1584) in the custody of the Earl of Shrewsbury. She was first held at Sheffield Castle, but 1573 she was moved to Sheffield Manor Lodge, which was considered to be a more fitting place for someone of her status. Sadly Sheffield Castle was destroyed during the Civil War, and most of Sheffield Manor Lodge lies in ruins, but The Turret House aka Queen Mary's Tower, built in 1574, still stands and has been fully restored. The oldest building in Sheffield city centre is Sheffield Cathedral, the bulk of which dates from 1430, though there are old parts dating back to around 1100, and much newer parts too.

Glad you enjoyed our fair city Steve. To be honest it has seen better days, and has been left in the dust by the likes of Manchester, Leeds and Liverpool in recent years, but as your video rightly shows, it is still a friendly and (if you know where to look) interesting place. Us locals might need reminding of that from time to time.

Ahhh, good to see the paternoster again after all these years! Back in the 1990s the German department was on floor 10 of the Arts Tower, so I was on that lift practically every day for three years whilst I was studying for my German degree. The views were always incredible from the tower, as you can imagine. Back then though, we used to get told off for going over the top or around the base! Thanks for bringing back the good memories of my student days, Steve.

That Paternoster is on my hit list - it would be worth the trip to Sheffield just for that. There are only 3 Paternosters left in the UK. When I was at Leeds Uni we had one there (it was removed a few years later) and the older students would go over the top and do a hand stand so the Freshers thought the lift actually flipped over. 😀

It was well worth getting up early for this video. I lost count of the number of times I drove past Sheffield on my way to the more civilised part of the UK, Scotland, but never stopped. Next time i will. Temperature has quite an effect on various things. Metal expands when getting warm and shrinks when getting cold. Water, on the other hand, expands when it gets cold or even freezes but it also expands when it gets to boiling point. When I was a boy we used to sneaked into one of the town halls in then West Berlin just to ride on the paternoster but had to make sure that none of the staff noticed us. Oh what fun we had .

Water contracts as it is cooled down to about 4 degrees Celsius but, at this point, the crystalline structure of ice starts to form. Water molecules interact with each other via an effect known as hydrogen bonding and below 4 deg the water molecules are mainly linked by only hydrogen bonds until they crystallise into ice at freezing point. Above 4 deg there's enough thermal energy to keep breaking the hydrogen bonds. Water molecules linked by hydrogen bonds are further apart than when they are not, so ice is less dense than water above 4 deg. It's a good thing really, otherwise our ice cubes wouldn't float in our drinks!

The link between length and temperature is that the metal that the ‘standard’ is made from will expand and contract depending on the temperature, so it can only be a true and accurate measure at the given temperature. Great video again Steve, thanks for taking us along with you.

Hi Steve. Thank you so much for this amazing video. I am Sheffield born and bred, recently moved not too far away but was there for 25 years. Being from here I often take it for granted and don't notice the beautiful buildings. 17:32 next to the graduate is a building that was once occupied by The Source (S). I worked there for years and it was amazing to work in the centre. Would watch snooker every lunch break during the world's in Tudor square. You'd be behind Steve Davis in the coffee queue or you'd see John Parrott having a walk. Great memories. Also, I was waiting for the 1 o clock signal to be late, still three minutes as usual! Thanks again Steve

When I was a child we used to visit Sheffield quite a lot as it was the nearest "big city" to us (we lived in a small village in the Peak District) but I've only been back a couple of times since then. However, I thought the location of the Ro'S shop looked familiar and indeed it was - there used to be a record shop, Cann's The Music Man, in the same passage. You used to be able to listen to records before you bought them (or not) in the booths. There used to be a great toy shop somewhere too - the provenance of some much loved Christmas presents. There used to be building sites in those days too - I remember my school cap being blown off into one and I had to run to retrieve it.

I haven't been to Sheffield for over 30 years but this has inspired me to visit again, as I now only live 70 miles away. A lot seems to have changed since my last visit, not least all the building at Sheffield's two universities and some pedestrianisation has made the place look smarter. The size of a metre or yard doesn't change with temperature. The reason the measuring device says that it's at 62F is that all materials expand and contract slightly as temperature changes. Metals do this fairly noticeably, and so when it's too hot or too cold, that piece of metal becomes far enough away from a yard to be considered inaccurate.

Sheffield actually has two universities. The one you passed near the station were buildings of Sheffield Hallam University while the Arts tower and other buildings in that area are those of the University of Sheffield. Near the university is Cutler’s Hall, where the master cutler was based and has exhibits looking at Sheffield’s huge history in making some of the world’s best cutlery. The Made in Sheffield mark on cutlery increases its value due to the reputation of the city in steel and silver work. Sheffield even had its own assay office and stamp of silver standards. The assay office is located in Hillsborough near the park. Sheffield has SO many parks and Green spaces too, being recognised as one of the greenest cities in Europe in terms of numbers of trees and Green spaces. It’s also right on the edge of the Peak District with parts of Sheffield technically being in Derbyshire. It also has the highest student retention rate of any city in the country as people come for the education and stay because of how welcoming and multicultural it is. It is the most accepting place I know (though I have lived here my whole life except for a 3 year stint in York)

Hi Steve. Have you heard about the new streamlined fast ferry to the Scillies.? What's special about the Scillies? Outside Scotland, these islands are the most dramatic in UK. And the fact that you'll now be able to do it easily as a day return, opens up new possibilities. When you yourself were there, it was during your whistle-stop pioneers days (when even a trip to the toilet was whistle-stop!!). You missed out on the number one attraction - Tresco - the only outdoor tropical gardens in UK, whose pineapple palms and banana trees are sheltered in an enclosed valley within an island. I was there.

I am a subscriber from Portland, Oregon in the U.S. Listening to you speak (which I love to do), I have realized the likely reason why I add "eh" or "aye" to the end of so many of my sentences. My grandparents, with whom I spent a lot of time as a child, lived in Alberta, Canada, where there were many people whose near descendants emigrated from Scotland. And sure enough, those grandparents, and to a lesser extent my father, added that expression to the end of many sentences.

Things expand when hot, it's how a thermometer works and why rails used to have gaps between them (making trains used go clickerty-click). 100m of Steel expands by about 1.5 mm per degree C. May not sound like much but temperatures range by up to 50 C even in Scotland (-20 to 30) it soon adds up. The Forth bridge is designed to allow thermal expansion of 16.5 inches. The Genetics department in Glasgow used to have a paternoster, it was a right of passage to go over the top

Wow, I've lived in Sheffield all my life and there are things on your video I've not known about - especially the 12.57 siren! I suppose it runs early so that the folk on 12.00 till 1.00 lunch arrive back at their post on time! Thanks for another brilliant video Steve.

Superb Steve, Sheffield = Quality in my experience. The town does not disappoint. Love that lift, well the kid in me does, the adult (really I am) is a wee bit scardie pants.

The nice brick pub near the crucible is the Brown Bear. Interesting fact, when Steve Davis was in his prime in the 1980s, he had a lucky ritual of stepping on the cellar doors each time he walked from his hotel to the snooker.

Great video, my only experience of Sheffield is the view from the M1 viaduct and from watching the Full Monty. The arts tower is beautiful in its own way.

Steve, I think the reason the temp, was mentioned when measuring things. Was because the measuring scale was metal. Hence if it was colder the metal would retract slightly, & if hotter, it would be slightly longer. Looking forward to the next instalment of 'Steve's Travels'

I was at Cutlers hall Sheffield end of last year doing a recruitment event. The exhibits are really interesting and upstairs is just as grand and beautiful. Great place to hold an event. Didn’t get too see much of Sheffield though.
