I Didn't Even KNOW You Could Do This!? - Kirkwall to Papa Westray with Loganair

The Loganair inter-island service operates with one pilot. This opens up the possibility of sitting in the spare seat to their right. I'll be honest, I didn't even know this was an option on a scheduled flight with a commercial airline, but today was my day! Join me in the best seat in the house :)

This video is not sponsored and all opinions are my own
Hi, I’m Steve from Scotland. I plan, film and edit travel videos both at home and throughout the world, with all the work done myself. I try to go a bit beyond the normal tourist route, exploring less-visited places and would be honoured if you'd come along as well. But please don't expect an expert guide, if that's what you're after, this is probably not the channel for you. What you WILL find here though are my 100% honest impressions of what I see along the way, albeit as a layman. And I always believe the star of any video is not me, but the places I visit. I hope this comes across and you can feel like you are there with me. Please remember to subscribe, like, comment, share, all that stuff if you enjoy my videos (or even a thumbs down if you don't!). I make a conscious effort not to say this in the videos themselves, but it would be a massive help to the channel and open it up to bigger audiences around the world. Oh, and who's that with me in many of the adventures? Well that must be my glamorous sidekick Alicja (who features as often as she can). Thanks for watching and enjoy the video :)

FAQs:
WHERE ARE YOU FROM?
I was born in Glasgow but have lived in Carnoustie, Dalgety Bay, Stonehaven, Edinburgh, Montrose, and further afield (Salamanca, Spain & Devonport, New Zealand)
WHEN DO YOU UPLOAD?
Saturdays at 10am Scottish time. Occasionally a bonus midweek video will pop up.
WHAT EQUIPMENT DO YOU USE?
I film with a GoPro11 and my iPhone12. I edit on iMovie and use epidemicsound.com for music. I also use canva.com for thumbnails etc.
WHY DON'T YOU SPEND LONGER AT DESTINATIONS?
The usual suspects I'm afraid - time and money! Hotels especially these days make my eyes water like a true Scotsman.
WHERE'S ALICJA?
Alicja will feature as often as possible, but I'm afraid she has a proper job so it can take weeks for our schedules to match up.
DO YOU PAY FOR YOUR OWN TRAVEL?
Yes I do. I've only ever accepted a complementary ticket as compensation for a previous problem. All my opinions are frank and honest reflections of travel as I experience it.
WHY THE ADS?
It's my income, I can't do this for free.
CAN I CONTACT YOU?
I used to list my email address but felt bad not having the capacity to respond to everything so took it down (and I got a LOT of spam so missed many genuine messages along the way).
HOW CAN I SUPPORT THE CHANNEL?
Watching my videos is of course support enough, but if you'd like to support further, I'll pop links below for Paypal and Patreon. All kind donations are super-appreciated and will go 100% towards future filming trips.
DO YOU ACCEPT SPONSORSHIPS?
I don't like to upset the flow of my videos, so I don't even include mid-roll ads anymore (at significant loss of income to myself), so I prefer not to include sponsorships either. I'm open to a small slide at the start/end of each video, but I don't want to get into talking about products, it's something I don't like as a viewer myself (especially as a viewer who pays for KZbin Premium). So it's probably a polite no, although all of this goes out the window if you offer me something which can give me the chance to make a video for my audience that would otherwise be impossible.

Wonderful little aircraft the Britten-Norman Islander, originally designed in the 60’s and still going strong worldwide. Perfectly suited (and named) for this kind of work. As a private pilot I would love to get some hands on time in this aircraft type and I’d be betting there’s a captain who loves his job.

It also has the 2nd shortest schedule flight, Stronsay to Sanday, which can be done in 4 minutes 😁. Both islands Steve flew over in this video. We are lucky to have so many inter-island flights available in Scotland. I was fortunate to do 25 flights to 15 islands in 2 weeks in August 2021, which included the Orkney flights, Shetland, Fair Isle, Lewis, Benbecula, several from Oban, and of course the beach landing at Barra. Most are with the small Britten Norman plane which allows great views due to it flying below 1000 ft mostly. I still have a few internal flights to do to complete them all.

I fancy that. I may have gone on about this before. If you happen to be in Vancouver, you can get the bus and ferry to Victoria, and from there the float plane to Seattle. Best bush plane ever. When we turned up at the airport (it's just a wee shack at the lakeside) they checked us in, took the bags, and pointed to a bar across the road -they'd call when the plane was coming in. 'Your pilot is ready'. So she shuffled us into the plane - getting weight balanced; so sitting next to her was her call. Then a flight that I wished had gone on - it was about 45 minutes; the seas and the islands. Noisy, but not the nasty shouty things across the ocean. I recommend.

Clearly the next flight is the very short one to Westray. Love both places. When we were cycling on Papa Westray and going to Westray we were running a bit late and were racing down the island hoping we wouldnt miss it. A few cars passed us and when they reached the ferry they told the ferry people we were racing down there - and they held the ferry to wait for us. Lovely people in Orkney. Have you visited Sanday?

Steve's happy face when he was allowed to sit with the pilot, like a kid in a candy store 😁That steering rod however was very close to your knees the whole time, I reckon it was kinda hard to find a position to make sure you would not touch it in flight.. 😆Lovely wee video and Loganair seems like a legit nice company, I have seen other travel vloggers fly this very same route and they were also allowed to sit up front with the pilot. So in the next part we see the shortest flight eh? I know this flight and is is so weird, just a wee hop over to the other island, is it like 2 or 3 minutes flight time or something? 😀 Enjoyed the video as usual Steve!!

I have flown a number of times in smaller general aviation aircraft like that and after stopping it takes a bit for your teeth to stop vibrating from the drone of those twin props and engines. My gosh what a flat, treeless place. I bet when a storm of any real strength blows thru the only place people want to be is inside a solid structure,,,, but the quiet is something intriguing to me and on a clear moonless night the stars or northern lights must be next to something heavenly. Thanks Steve for showing us.

On our return flight from North Ronaldsay back to Kirkwall, in about 1979, my big brother got to sit in the co-pilot's seat. He was fascinated by the yoke moving in front of him. Judging by the plaque in the airport, that must've been Loganair back then too. I'm sure they wouldn't let an 8-year-old do that now as I can't imagine he was strapped in very well! You say you'd like to visit North Ronaldsay. I'm sure there must be more to it - so I apologize to the residents for my rather inadequate guide - but all I remember is a run-down lighthouse and a bunch of scabby sheep eating seaweed on the beach!

Oh, Steve! That really takes me back. Our close Orkney friend used to live on Sanday, and we used to fly in to see her when the airstrip there was a grass field and the passengers had to be weighed before being allocated a seat! She then moved to the metropolis of Kirkwall and as a peripatetic teacher used to fly to the island schools in the mornings; she'd occasionally get stuck on an island because of the weather though, having to stay with the local head teacher. What a wonderful trip; so glad you were able to make it and share your experience!

Wow!! What an awesome experience. Thank you so much for sharing it. I loved how the propellers looked like they were hardly moving! The view. Gravel runway. The islands. The view. 😢Stunning. Thank you!

I was pretty sure that this was what you were doing in the Orkneys. It's on my list, as is landing at Barra. This is a phenomenal video, beautifully filmed.

Crikey Steve, the end of that runway came up at fair clip! How great in today's (dysfunctional) world to be able to sit there with the complete trust of Pilot Magnus not to fiddle with anything! Amazing views of a very special place in the world................ Another Steve Marsh classic!

Lucky you , Steve 👏 I made my first flight aged 30, I’m 60 now and have flown many times since. It was a BA Glw-Heathrow flight and I was invited by the Purser to go on the flight deck. I joined the crew just before they were over Windsor. Amazing experience. I’d have loved the view you had though.

Another superb vlog, thanks Steve. Wonderful to see the BN Islanders still doing their thing, a great aircraft and perfect for the Island hops. Looking forward to your next hop, skip and jump 😀. You'll need some bands on your shirts now as a honorary 1st Officer.

Two thing memorable about this excellent video - the Saltire with the great John Young's signature on the plaque (a childhood hero of mine) and the aircraft engine noise reminding me of the flights between Guernsey and Jersey on business- and sitting on the side that the rain came in ! . Constantly delivering high standards in production as always Steve !

Steve thanks for including the name of the Aircraft flown. I was trying to figure it out. It looked like a Britten-Norman Islander but I wasn't sure. That is a really neat looking airplane and it has a great purpose being a utility plane. Ideal for flying just a few passengers each trip.

Delta Victor was built in 1984. I'd LOVE to travel on an BN Islaander. My old pal Bob Jones (ex fleet air arm pilot) used to fly the Twotter and Islander after a career flying fast jets. He really liked the Islander. Tough as old boots. Noisy but strong and dependable.
