Tom Knight, John Dunn and JSM told us to go to Orkney, so we did! Viewers' Choice Episode One :)

We had a few days off together and put out the question on the KZbin Community page for ideas of where to go and boy did some incredible suggestions come back! I get the feeling we'll be working through that list forever, but here is episode one :) Many thanks to Tom, John and JSM for the inspiration.
Alicja has never been to Orkney before and I've only been there briefly. We made our choice at the last minute and to be honest more than anything we were following the weather - typically for when you put in for time off work the dark clouds appear, but we did alright!
Please bear in mind, this video was filmed during our holiday, so we weren't really focussed too much on a narrative, so it's more just clips of our time there, but of course I hope you still enjoy what I've been able to pull together in the edit. If nothing else it'll give you an impression of this wonderful group of islands off the northern tip of the mainland.
We travelled by ferry via Northlink's Scrabster - Stromness route. This was the cheapest option for going with the van (which is also our accommodation), but did involve a longggg drive to get to the top of the mainland first! There is a ferry from Aberdeen too, but we couldn't afford it. This ferry journey was around £200 return including van, so that was our only big expense to make the trip.
Music features a little more on this video that I would like, but unfortunately that was down to the fierce wind blowing almost constantly over the islands!
Enjoy the video.
Hi, I’m Steve. I am a travel reviewer and post my trip reports here on KZbin. I pay for my own travel and produce my own videos. If you have any questions about my journeys or travel advice in general, please drop me a comment - I do read every single one. I’d also love to hear any recommendations you may have for future content, or why not challenge me to try something a little out of the ordinary! If you are looking to collaborate on any type of project, I’d love to hear from you - email me your ideas and hopefully we can work together in the future.

Hi folks, this is a bit of a different format today. Windy weather and the fact it was more holiday than filming trip left me little to work with editing the video, but this is what I managed to pull together from my dodgy clips, I really hope you still enjoy it! You deserved a video of some sort this week so this is it :D

Postcards being dropped in the post at 17:42, very much a dying art form and I love sending and getting them from friends while they are traveling. It let's me know they thought enough to actually write a note while they are away and purchased a stamp to send me something. It is so much more personal than a text! A very classy act you two. Send me one in the Colonies next! ;-)

@@volvot5boy Mark, just the person I want to talk to. You live on Harris? Is there anyway I can get to Harris distillery from Isle of Skye and back again the same day in October? I looked at the Ferry Winter timetable from last year and there doesn't seem to be any ferries going there from Skye and back on the same day. Is this true? Are there other ferries I could take back to the mainland?

Fabulous video! I don't know why have missed this until now. It's many years since I was in Orkney. My wife and I (and our then one toddler) flew down from Shetland one time for a weekend. The weather turned bad, so the only way back was on the cargo ferry (pre roll-on-roll off). They could take 12 passengers -- and our son was the 13th! We had a small cabin on this small, unstabilised boat and rolled all night from Kirkwall to Lerwick. The motion was especially bad as we crossed the Sumburgh Roost, the tide race at the south end of Shetland. Orkney and Shetland have many similarities, but also significant differences. By the way, I love the Italian chapel - and amazing work of art by the Italian prisoners of war.

Wow - Some great memories for me there really must try & go back to Orkney sometime. Also remember Maes Howe Tomb of the Eagles overlooking Scapa & inside the Italian Church is stunning. Apparently descendents of the original prisoners still go back periodically. Really enjoy your content. Even though travel situation seems to be opening keep the Edinburgh vids coming my favourite UK city. After viewing your back catalogue now have a full itinerary for my September visit ! Cheers & keep doing what you do.

Steve 😊 So glad I came across this video. I have never been to the Orkney Islands, they look stunning! (maybe one day, I'll find my way there) but I think I mentioned not long ago that I had been to the Shetland Islands. A highlight of that trip (in 2018) was a trip down to Sumburgh, from the port town of Lerwick. At Sumburgh I enjoyed a pleasant stroll to the lighthouse, at the southern tip of the Shetlands, where there was also a lovely little cafe looking out to sea, and I had a very nice scone and coffee.

Glad you took the chance and did it, we didn't get to go to Stromness when we went a few years ago, we caught the little foot passenger ferry from John o'Groats and then took the coach ride the other side, we didn't have time to do the longer trip, but we still ended up going to Kirkwall, to the amazing Skara Brae and the Ring of Brodgar. We also got to see the Italian Chapel and the Churchill Barriers. Such a beautiful location in all weathers, at least it looks like it got sunnier whilst you were there.

So glad you've walked on the wonderful Orkney Islands too! Aye, it's a magical place. We were worried about weather on the sailing there, but it improved nicely :)

Absolutely loved the brief revisit to Orkney. I spent several days 4 years ago visiting every where our guide took us to including maes Howe. Beautiful beautiful place. I remember enjoying a wee drink of whiskey looking at the brough of Birsay watching the Atlantic Ocean meld with the North Sea. Thanks for the video

So glad you've experienced it too, and we have plenty places still to see there for sure. But that setting at Birsay is just magical eh!?

That was brilliant. Video was fun and informative. You are giving me great ideas about where to go when covid allows me to travel back to the UK and spend a decent amount of time in Scotland. Never even considered Shetland or the Orkneys - until now. The archaeological sites were amazing, I had no idea. Stay safe, Ian

Well worth a visit Ian - you'll see a very dramatic and unique part of Scotland up there in Orkney and Shetland - and there are some other amazing islands I am yet to visit like Fairisle, Foula and St Kilda - I have a real thing for islands :)

Oh, what beautiful places. Priceless look on Alicja's face when she found out where she was going! lol Loved the stone walkway over the water! Our son would love practicing his photography skills there! Love all the historical information you pass on too, really helps to understand the area better. Brent recognized the Italian church right away (of course he did.....😒) and then he explained it all to me. We enjoy going on these little adventures with you two. Don't be so modest about your "clips", you're a natural at this and authentic and that's why everyone appreciates your videos. Keep up the great work and looking forward to the plane flight over the Orkneys!

Brings back memories of my two months in Scotland in 1984 where I used to wake up each morning and see the Isle of Hoy out my window. Always wantd to visit Scapa Flow butI had a 2 hour response time to the Navy base. Your video was a nice substitute. Look forward to County Caithness videos. Thank You Steve.

Thanks so much James! Ohhh that's a restricting response time and it would be just typical to get caught out if you tried it!
