Yup another way of saying it is that being very good, even excellent is not enough. Kerys Mathews plays excellent music you have never heard of every week, a writing class I went to was half filled with people who could write a book good enough to sell, you have to be so outstanding people are excited. Steve outlines it a little more in his autobiography saying after he worked out his 'happy feet' skit that he realised all of his jokes had to be that original for him to rise to the top (after many years on the road).

it's a valid point, what martin is saying is most people think it's just talent and all you have to do is show up. wrong... these people, almost all of them, put in the work, study what they're doing, approach it as a job, realize you have to do your job better than the next guy/gal.

When I started as a counsellor working for myself , I had to advertise a bit to get myself known in the area. As time went on, I focussed only on helping people to be the best they could ever be and for me to do the best for them. The reason why this isn't practical advice is that it's incredibly difficult and unlikely that you will "be so good they can't ignore you". The number of people who are "that good" in any field is very small. The majority of people who make it as an actor or a musician or whatever aren't "that good" - rather they found a certain niche and exploited certain connections or opportunities to make a "brand" that sells and which gets them off the ground professionally. Furthermore, this advice is even worse when you consider how many amazingly talented people never achieve any sort of significant success. There are a million amazing musicians and artists out there who never make a decent living at their craft even though they are much better than many commercially successful acts. To put it simply: 1) There are tons of people who aren't "that good" who are commercially succcessful 2) There are tons of people who are incredibly "good" but who can't even make a living at what they do.

I agree. I will say that from the dabbling that I’ve done in Acting and some other discoveries, a lot of people that you see in sitcoms are actually much more diverse in their talents. Some people who do comedy are actually given chances to do things beyond that range and they have success at it, but a lot of them probably are not because it actually is a risky thing in their career. Look up flow, who does the progressive commercials. She may have done a few other little things and she’s probably capable of a lot more but she’s worth $6 million over doing commercials.

Charlie Rose was definitely one of a kind. His interviews were brilliant. You had really made it when you made an appearance on Charles Rose. He challenged politicians and questioned science. He was on five nights a week and each show was as rich and fresh as if it was the one he had focused on his whole life. We need him during these chaotic times more than ever. That's why I'm angry with him. When he blew it the whole world lost. The whole world. Charlie, I miss those days and grieve that you got off track and we lost you. If I ever meet you, I'll slap your selfish face.

This feels like partially good advice because if no one knows how good you are you’ll still never be successful. Also, you have to be seen by people that will appreciate your talent or it won’t matter either. The other thing is being able to realize that you may not be as good as you think.

Is it easier than meeting someone at a cocktail party? 😂 I think perhaps this says a lot about his desire to socialise.

Louis CK had better advice. He says he sucked at comedy for MOST of his career. He almost gave up. How do you get undeniably good? You keep doing the craft even if you’re terrible and never give up. One day you wake up and you’re excellent.
