Sienfield supposedly had a reserve in place and it wasn’t met! The cars going to continue to appreciate. So why give it away?

Seinfeld is a billionaire. 25 mil to him is like 2,500 to me. He can sit on it forever.

$25M for that car is a bit light....This is a special unicorn, and it is the ultimate Porsche. A 73 RSR is $2.5 or so...nd this is far more exciting than 10 of those... While it is neat to see this machine in public, it will only really be sold privately, and in a setting commensurate with the heft of the car.

How many times can you walk around the car with a low angle camera?

The iconic Gulf liveried Porsche 917 never won Le Mans except in the Steve McQueen film.

The hype far exceeded the car itself. This was not a race winner, this was not historic in terms of racing provenance. The "restoration" went so far as to have a replica autograph?! The effort to tie it to Steve McQueen seemed too much, especially since he's known as an actor and not a significant race champion. I thought about $10-15M USD would be appropriate. Obviously I was incorrect. My only other comment is the style of the Mecum auctions - the hootin' and hollerin' seems somehow inappropriate when dealing with multi-million dollar items. I get it, it's their thing, and they're obviously successful, it's just my opinion.

The $14 million sale in 2017 was not this car. That sale was the car in the Brumos Museum. Similar in that both were used in filming "Le Mans".

I wonder what Jerry thought it would bring? $30,000,000?

Reserve poss too high 26 Million is all the money IMO and Mecum should have driven it up on block rather then push it. And then Blow smoke on restart that Flat 12 cyl needed to be revving all the way into the room. Maybe they sell it after bidding ends. When you think about a Million bucks to Jerry is like 100 to many of us so he prob will get a deal done after taking some offers is my guess. If not prob will see it on Bring A Trailer 😂 I will say he should have let it go for the high bid.

You won’t sell a great car at Mecum. Mecum’s specialty is selling people’s problems. You buy junk at Mecum and then have no recourse after the auction. The auction is still run like a circus sideshow. These guys started as distressed farm auctioneers preying on people’s misfortunes. Pretty much the same today.
@scottm83811 күн бұрын
If that’s true why did Seinfeld bring the car to Mecum? Why not bring it to BJ? Why did the Bullitt Mustang go to Mecum along with all of Carroll Shelby’s personal Cobras and Mustangs? How did Mecum Kissimmee get to be the largest car auction in the world? (google it)
@michaelsheedy18 күн бұрын
Seinfeld wouldn't lift the reserve at 25 million. Unbelievable. Frank Mecum looks pissed half the time trying to rangle with stubborn owners who want to make an unreasonable killing. I have seen these guys at model train shows who want way too much for their engines and rolling stock and thus sell nothing.

It's a movie prop with an expensive restoration so you can't really use it without hurting it's value. If I had 917 money I'd buy a less well known car to vintage race or wait to buy something with a win somewhere. Does anyone alive under 50 even remember McQueen (or Seinfeld for that matter)? Every year it becomes less relevant as a Hollywood icon.
