I was fortunate to meet Steve McQueen in 1971 while I was bussing tables in Barstow, California at Lou's Hacienda (restaurant). McQueen, Malcolm Smith and Mert Lawell came in to eat. They were in town filming "On Any Sunday". I was in awe at his easy demeanor and friendliness as I served them coffee and chatted a bit. It was a weekend and I didn't want to be at work. I took every opportunity to return to their table, keeping their coffee cups full. When they had finished and were leaving, I walked by their table as they got up. Steve held out his hand and said to me. "Winston. Nice to meet you. Hang in there kid". He palmed me a $10 tip with his folded up place-setting, autographed ""Winston, Hang in their kid". Steve McQueen." WOW! What Rush!

My favorite actor ever. Gone far too soon from a nasty and terrible disease. There was never an actor like him before and there definitely hasn’t been one since. It’s a massive shame that we didn’t get to see him transition into a character actor in his later years as he had already started to do with a few film roles and had shown flashes of throughout his career. Cinema suffered greatly the day Steve passed. I am glad that he seemed to have found some peace towards the end after a tumultuous and rough life.

Steve was in the boys town home I was in the Irish equivalent so i always admired Steve McQueen. At this moment I'm a grown man reduced to tears after watching this. Seeing these images what jumps from the page is that he was just a good ole boy with a talent few will ever know. Women swooned, men wanted to be him, or at least hang out with him. What I admire the most is that he lived his life the way he wanted to and never let his public image get in the way of who he really was inside. He never compromised that integrity. In the dictionary under Movie Star is a picture of Steve McQueen.

The manliest man who graced our screens didn’t need huge muscles, showed softness and comic timing. But the fire in the eyes and the athleticism, fearlessness, and a sense for the common folk shoots him past almost all other action hero’s/anti-hero’s. Clint Eastwood exceeded him in some qualities, but didn’t show the human touch often enough.

I knew Steve, he hung around my fathers gas station in Santa Paula, Ca along with Von Dutch who lived right across the street in an old school bus. Something very few people know about Steve is he was enormously generous $$$$ with disadvantaged children. Steve had a very unhappy childhood and he could never fathom why out of all the people on the planet earth he was chosen to be highly paid movie star. Consequently he gave a lot, and I mean a lot, of his money away to children's charities. Steve was by nature a very quite person, a real wall flower ... his real personality wasn't that quite charisma you see in the movies. So he gave the money away very quietly, without publicists taking a picture of him handing a check to someone, like many Hollywood celebrities do. By the way, when I knew him he'd put on a lot of weight and had a big bushy beard so no one recognized him ... he loved that no one recognized him and that they thought he was some bum hanging around the station ... if only they knew LOL !!!

Steve McQueen ... an enormous star at his day but even bigger in his passing, still regarded in the top 10 moneymaking film stars who have died thanks to Tag Heuer and a lot of other endorsements movies ... With historic credits movies like the “The Great Escape” ...”Bullet” ..”The a Magnificent Seven” .... “Pappillion” ... Steve is by far one of the greatest actors in our modern day Hollywood period. At one point even earning more than his role as the fire chief in the mega movie “The Towering Inferno” out doing Fred Astaire for a 20 minute on screen role ... we’ll never know where or how he got his Mesothelioma from maybe navy working with asbestos or in the racing suits and helmets ... but a great shame taken far to early of this vicious decease my own father lost his life to ..., you’re the man Steve always will be ;) thx Barbara A wonderful insight into the private life in the last years of this man’s amazing life ;) brilliant thank you 🙏🏻 cheers

I know Bud Ekins did the famous jump scene but Steve even doubled as the German soldier chasing him on the bike! Im not a film maker but I just cant imagine anyone today that could do those scenes so well. He made it acceptable to be yourself, stay true to your bliss and maintain a cool demeanor without being a jerk. Thanks Steve, RIP

What an enigma was Steve ! Every movie I saw him in, created something inside of me. Then time eats away at even the best of us just to show us we are merely the dust from which we came. Thankfully the memories we make & leave behind are made of sterner stuff. Steve, you & those blue eyes, your smile that could light up a whole room & the fantasies you allowed us to escape to, shall never be forgotten. @Nobby Barnes or how about the millions of people currently living in slavery , not abject slavery , plain old fashioned slavery ... or the children born with aids , covered in flies and starving right now ... but what god really cares about , is if some spoiled elitist pig , catches a football and makes a touchdown , so people can watch it on tv and see them point to the sky in praise of himself , thanking the maker for blessing them ... all people have equal worth but some are more equal than others ... jesus said to his apostles , re: finding his lost sheep... do not go among the gentiles , I am not here for them ... gentiles being a hebrew term for "the nations" as in , anyone not a blood related member of the 12 tribes of israel ... this alone would specifically exclude most of you euro americans from ever entering heaven ... when his apostles asked , re: bringing his lost sheep home , what if they do not believe us , what if they will not listen ? ... jesus said, bring them here and slaughter them before me ... oh and love each other as I have loved you ... hahahahahaha ... jesus also said he did not come to change the old laws or prophecies and prophecies state, all will not be fulfilled until the end times, judgement day , the end of heaven and earth and a new heaven and earth taking their place , that is when the laws and prophecies will have served their purpose and can be put aside ... which clearly has not taken place , so all the old laws are still on the books , including , no gentiles allowed .. has nice day

Steve was a brilliant actor, I love him in all his movies and I watch "Wanted Dead or Alive" every day! He was such a talent, with usually a quiet demeanor (yet raced like mad!), smart, and it makes me so sad the way he suffered in the end and how he tried SO hard to stay alive. A heavy smoker, he got lung cancer and then it metastasized (spread all over). He had a bad beginning and a sad end but in the middle -- how he shown! Thanks for the video, I think it helps people understand him a little more.

It was the asbestos he injested while in the Navy that he died from. Not from smoking.

Thank you for this wonderful tribute. Just for the record: EVERY heterosexual girl in the universe was in love with Steve McQueen. he was a real free spirit and a truly manly man with very rugged and handsome features. I think Steve and Robert Mitchum might TIE at the top of the list of "Most Handsome Men of all time." *How sad that Steve didn't live well into his 70's or 80's.(!) but he certainly lived his life to the fullest!*
