@@aschule5684 , thanks!, 25 years married, and lived together for several years before. I took her to see the Steve Morse Band on our second date ---- not because she was into that type of music particularly (it's still a little outside of her usual listening choices) but because she had an unexpected night off from work (hospital, 2nd shift), knew I was going to see SMB with friends, and wanted to see ME. About a month later I took her to see John Hiatt on the Perfectly Good Guitar tour and she instantly became a huge fan. We made up cassette tapes as wedding favors, and included a lot of guitar players, including Adrian Legg, Martin Simpson, Jerry Douglas, John Hiatt, Sonny Landreth, Debbie Davies, Steve Morse, and some Irish and African music. Years later we're still together,, and people tell us they wore that tape out in their cars, so we must have picked well! 😉

Steve is a brilliant musician, yet so humble, friendly and accessible. I met him at the Double Door Inn in Charlotte (mid 70s) with the Dregs. My band was trying to gig there. His playing and approach led me to some serious wood-shedding! This is great, and Vin & Dave are monsters! 👍

Never commented on KZbin about anything, but as a Steve Morse fan since the first Dixie Dregs album, Free Fall, I have been enamored with his extraordinary talent. To have a video of him in what I think is essentially his prime, technically and musically, with Van and Dave is priceless. Thank you for the upload. Can't stop watching! I think Van works out everyday. I would be exhausted after just one or two songs playing like that. Yet he never overplays in my humble opinion. Also, the one of the most unique non-pocket pocket drummers I have seen. I realize that being with the SMB gives him that luxury; I am aware of his resume and haver seem them all live. But there is something very unique about his drumming. And is there anything left to say about Dave on bass? Whew!

Rid Morganstein, after Ginger Baker & Keith Moon, took that 'implied backbeat' to new levels. I was lucky enough to see the original Dixie Dregs (and, much later, SMB). Morganstein was unlike any other drummer. Still, he and Van can lay down solid backbeats if that's what's called-for.

I'm a huge Steve Morse fan, I found out about his playing when I was 14 (1998) reading a interview with John Petrucci in a guitar magazine. So naturally I had to go out and find every CD of his I could. Then I found his old REH video and it changes my approach to alternate picking.

​@@nukes27, I've seen the Dregs, Steve Morse solo, and SMB many times, but never personally experienced this level of crowd disrespect; but when I saw Jackson Browne and David Lindley playing magical duets together, the audience was yakking loudly or calling out for other songs, and it wasn't the type of music that could drown out the crowd. Jackson chided the audience: "You're calling out for some really old songs; I guess this must be the Valley that Time Forgot". (Jackson by himself is kinda boring, but I loved Lindley, and Lindley's mutant reggae-rock band ElRayo-X opened the show ---- you just haven't lived until you've stood up against the stage and heard Lindley playing his electric lap steel through a Dumble amp from ten feet away!)

Steve Morse was voted Best Overall Guitarist 5 years in a row by Guitar Player Magazine (back when it was the only guitar magazine) and is in The Gallery of the greats! He’s also one of the greatest composers ever to pick up the instrument. The word underrated is overrated and overused. Just stop!!

Steve is a musician's musician. Technical artist and Dave LaRue an excellent bass player. Steve was the perfect replacement for RB in Deep Purple. He adds his own flare to the DP catalogue of music. Love his style and mastery of the fretboard. Classic experience as well adds to the Morse sound too!

Anyone notice he broke a high E string during Night Meets Light? And he finished the song without the benefit of being able to incorporate open E notes (among other things), but he improvised and made it look like it didn't even matter. Mark of a master. That's the reason for the different guitar after the drum solo.

As I just wrote elsewhere: I've seen the Dregs many times but the best was at Brassy's in Cocoa Beach around 1982 or so. (Kind of the same place/setup as the band is playing above.) I was watching from the pool room which was to the west side of the stage and I could watch them from there and there was no one else there. Meanwhile, everyone else in the bar was packed up front by the stage. They did three encores and every time they 'exited' to the side pool room (I think the guys who worked there thought I was one of their roadies or such) and during every? break,(at least two) at my request they would play songs (Wabash Cannonball was one) with the violin down low and Steve Morse playing the unamplifed electric (a Fender?) as loud as he could. Maybe they also did Orange Blossom Special? I think it was some Chet Atkins number. PHENOMENAL!!! Just me playing pool and them playing those tunes right there while I just was stoked. I see the lyrics for that (instrumentals only were played of course) " Well, I'm going down to Florida" . . . Twas pure magic! RC

I have seen the Dregs and the Steve Morse band a couple dozen times and I never really warmed up to Van Romaine as a drummer. Rod Morganstein is THE man! And yes, Steve is one of the most gracious, generous people you could ever hope. At every single show I've attended he always came out to give out guitar picks and sign autographs and just chat with people. I Interviewed him by phone once for an article I was writing and he was very chatty and helpful.

Apparently this was the Steve Morse Band band opening for the Dregs so they only had a 50 minute set and couldn't work in all of the good S MB stuff. Perhaps they should have skipped the "medley" at the beginning in order to work something else in, or saved Night Meets Light for the full Dregs to play.
