Steve and Albert go back as far as this song was written and are very close friends, so Steve would never step on one of Albert's songs. Steve's signature guitar is capable of sounding like the Telecaster that Albert is playing, so why go there? For those who think Steve is "out of his depth" with this song, type in Dixie Dregs "The Bash", or "Pride of the Farm" to get an idea of Morse covering that genre. There is a reason why Steve is one of only 3 guitarists to ever to win the "Overall Best Guitarist of the Year" 5 years in a row, retiring him from competition (Rock, Jazz, Blues, Bluegrass, Country, Fusion, Classical). A Dregs or SMB concert is a roller coaster of genres. John Petrucci went to a Dregs concert when he was an up and coming guitarist (at the age of 18) and afterwards he said he realized he had a whole new level to achieve and names Morse as his main influence. The song he said that blew him away was "The Bash". John still has all of Steve's instructional manuals and tapes he bought afterward as well as the 8 x 10 that Steve autographed at that show when John was introduced to him. Beside his autographed, Steve wrote "Practice". The top guitarists never "compete" against each other when sharing the stage (which is why a G 3 tour works), because they are comfortable with their own body of work. Steve Vai, John Petrucci, Eric Johnson, Joe Satriani, etc. are all good friends and site each other as influences. Morse often works with Vai at one of his Academies and has done G3 tours with most I've listed.

Yea I have been a fan of Morse since the late 70's. I have been privileged to see him many times. I am a player myself and know what kind of time dedication it takes to retain you physical ability to play guitar. I have to say as I get older I find it more difficult to play the more technical passages i used to play with ease. But with age and musically maturity I would hope what I cant do with speed and dexterity I make up for in passion and note selection. Steve's musical mind is nothing short of genius! Unfortunately I think I read somewhere that skate boarding with his son and breaking a wrist may be part of the difference in his right hand technique you see here, but i'm not positive. I will continue to buy his music and watch his concerts because he is such a wonderful, humble artist that always gives back to the guitar community. He has influenced my playing and his music still brings me much joy.
@DUSTYBASS10 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it's a drag when age combined with an injury changes things. I had fingers re-attached along with a carpectomy and partial wrist fusion.. Thank God my Wife told the doctor I was a bass player, which resulted in two surgeries. The doctor wanted to know which way to fuse the wrist. I work at it, not what I was speed wise. Had to use a pick for two years til I could get the fingers to do what the brain told them. Dave La Rue is a monster, don't think I could play along with him even before the accident. Steve Morse is a monster guitarist who never got the attention the Van Halen, Satriani's of the World did. That's okay, as long as we know.
@Mordred4786 жыл бұрын
I agree with everything you said so eloquently. Actually, though, it wasn't breaking his wrist that has limited Steve's right hand ability, but advanced osteoarthritis, which he now has. This is the reason for the brace that he wears often nowadays, and more recently the grimaces of extreme pain when he does fast runs. You'll notice that he has reinvented his picking technique to try and minimize this so that he keeps his wrist straight and uses an up and down arm motion instead of the old way of pressing the side of his right hand against the guitar body, pinky extended, and picking from the wrist. I will love and revere him always not only for his music, but because of the example of unwavering dedication, discipline and his unwillingness to accept anything less than perfection from himself.

I do not know why people are stunned by Morse's high gain tone on this song. He often uses high gain for country songs. It's part of his signature sound. Sometimes he starts a country solo clean and shifts to high gain in the solo such as in the more recent live version of The Bash or going way back to Rocky Top. In fact, in the only two Steve Morse Band tracks I know of in which he has Albert Lee as a guest player, Morse used high gain in each of his solos, contrasting Lee's clean tone. Actually here, he is only using high gain for the solos in this song. The rest of his work in the song is clean tone. As far as Morse being sloppy, get real. And watch the rest of the videos for other songs in this concert if you want to hear his variety of playing. Morse is still a devastating player.

Albert Lee Rules! A country boy from England?
@zootsoot20063 жыл бұрын
We have countryside in England too. And I'm pretty sure country music evolved out of British folk music of the settlers in the Appalacian mountains, no?

Just saw Albert Lee on 4/14/19 at the Coach House in San Juan Capistrano. He put on a great show. Such a talent. I've been a Dixie Dregs fan since the 70's and now I know where he got much of his musical influence. This was the first time seeing Albert Lee. Where have I been?

After reading all the comments about Steve's tone, I'd like to point out something others may not have considered: He probably opted for that tone to provide some contrast.

Another reason -I think -that ENGL with 4x12 not a typical country/bluegrass amp, Maybe with a Peavey... but so go to a fusion...

Absolutely correct-he wasn't about to copy Lee's tone.

I just loved Albert Lee since I first time saw him on TV. He also played double there with James Burton backing Emmylou Harris. Think about it, the two greatest chickem pickers side by side. They both put the guitar on theirs backs and picked the living daylight out of it. Later both played with Jerry Lee Lewis, that's heaven. And here with Steve Morse. Albert Lee, that's one country boy having done the greatest combos.

Truly. as a fan of both, Lee and Morse, I was a bit surprised with Steve's contribution here. I really expected him to deliver his own unique bluegrass trademark to "battle" Al's. For some reason he didn 't look quite comfortable on stage. You can probably tell from his face. His tone was also quite out of place. In any case, oh boy..Steve's got unlimited credit with me.

Fair enough, interesting comments, but what a great example of "One man's/woman's meat etc". I've seen both of them live, Albert with the sublime Hogan's Heroes and Steve with Purple and for the life of me I'm struggling to understand the criticisms. For me Steve sounds quite superb and I can't hear anything amiss with his tone, it sounds perfect and right and certainly doesn't look anything like his usual relaxed self. Albert of course is as wonderful as ever and for me anyway they're a perfect combination.

Zeitgeist971 Yeah absolutely. At the end of the day, mine is just another opinion among thousands. As much as I confess this one being the first and only video in which I did not like Steve's playing,( because I am opnely a die-hard fan of his work for starters), it is just that.I expected something totally different. "It all lies in the eye of the beholder". Anyone unfamiliar with his work might even say. "Awesome playing!!"...yet the man standing up there is Steve Morse, and he himself has set a very high ground for his own craft.

Karen Bennett Hey... I gotta call you out, a little bit.. Any "Die-Hard" fan of Steve Morse, would certainly be familiar with his FIRST solo album, where He and Albert Lee, both play together on the song: "General Lee"..A brilliant country instrumental, where Steve, uses his distorted tone, and Lee plays his signature clean tone...They've been doing this circus act since the early 80's! So, it's no surprise they would follow suit, here in 2014. if you happen to be a die hard fan, that is! LOL. ( Thanks, for letting me get that out!) No worries! :)

Karen Bennett May I just say that it's so heartening to read all these comments. Although some are conflicting, there's none of the rudeness and malice that so many KZbin topics descend to. A pleasure to communicate with you all.

shucksful Yep I'm aware of that. As a matter of fact, it was not only "General Lee", there is another one on Morse's Stand Up called "Rocking Guitars". But it wasn't so much this I was talking about. I just don't like Steve's playing on this particular video that much. Anyway, not a big deal.
