I agree but I believe there is more to the story than what we will ever know. I am not in his shoes but it seems like if you become that big in a band you would want to ride that train for as long as possible.

I'm not surprised he got burned out mentally. JOURNEY toured non-stop, sang the same songs over and over again, and they never had much rest until the next show. He is doing great returning writing and singing new music. I'm glad his heart is back to music even though many music artists at his age would retire.

Notice how Steve won’t even say the name of their former manager? I think the two had some bad blood. Herbie Herbert is the genius behind Journey, btw. However, I think he pushed Steve too hard and kept him singing too many live shows too often and it wrecked his voice.

Steve Perry was the nicest, most compassionate, most inciteful band member in Journey. He made that band what it became. The other band members knew that without his amazing voice, they were done. He has such a soft side and that comes out so strong when he talks about his mother and relationships. When anyone mentions the band Journey, we know these guys were great insturmentalists but Steve Perry's voice was the greatest insturment that put that band on the road to success. Good on you Steve for being who you are and staying true to yourself.
@ts319662 жыл бұрын
Besides the voice he has an incredible ability to make great music. I was not a Journey fan when they were together and popular. I did like their music, but I did not go to their concerts. Now, after all these years, it is obvious they were one of the greatest bands to have ever existed. Steve Perry is Journey without Neil Schon on guitar. But Neil does not have the ability to come up with great guitar without Steve Perry stocking the fire.
@jimcrain26472 жыл бұрын
True but Journey did good before him and they are now selling out stadiums with out him. But the new huge lawsuit between Steve and Neil will go on for a while over the trademarks of Journey.

@ts319662 жыл бұрын
@@stephaniemathews9156 as I stated previously there would be no Journey if Perry had never joined the band. All the band members were there but they could not produce a hit. Add Perry, instant hits. Add Arnel, no hits. Arnel was a great replacement singer before Neil Schon ruined his voice. Schon has ruined the voices of 4 singers. Schon does not care about the singer. He cares about his bank account.

After listening to Steve Perry's interview on Q104.3 via youtube tonight, I must say he surprised me. In my mind I imagined him as being very uppity and "hey, I'm a superstar" because he was a member of one of THE most successful bands "Journey" and a brilliant solo career of all time with an iconic voice.... but I just sat here in my home with my mouth opened. Stunned! What a humble, gentle, wise and sensitive man he is and I'm so ashamed for thinking the way I did and I offer my sincere apologies. Steve Perry gently put me in my place tonight.... I now have a new "wonderful" opinion and respect for him.. Welcome back to the world of music Steve Perry.... ❤

I am so happy I ran across this today. Coincidentally, my sisters and I were texting about Steve just yesterday. We had been talking about iconic singers and we agreed that Steve was one of the best, his voice was phenomenal, and it could NOT be copied by anyone. Listening to him touched my soul. I believe I have every record on vinyl!! Anyway, that conversation led to me finding Journey’s greatest hits album on YT, and we each in our own homes immediately listened to it. It was the most joyful, most freeing hour and a half I’d spent in 3+ years. Thank you, Steve, for the incredible music. It brought me joy when it came out and it brings me joy now. Thank you for this incredible interview. I truly enjoyed it. ❤️

Steve is a class act. Such an amazing Man! I love him so much and have so much respect for him. He always stayed true to himself. He was burnt-out, and he deserved time off to take care of himself and have a normal life. He went through a lot. He lost his Mom, had hip surgery, his girlfriend, Kelly passed away, among other heartbreaks--not to mention what he went through with Journey. It was so beautiful what he said about Kelly--he was so in love with her! He started to lose his voice due to the long tours. It takes a lot out of you. As a singer myself, I can totally relate to what Steve is saying, because often times, the lead singer does not get as much respect as the other musicians in the band, which I think is so unfair because the lead singer has a lot of pressure put on them, and singing Steve Perry/Journey songs is not an easy job. It's hard work! Steve deserved a break from music. Just because someone is talented, rich and famous, does not exclude them from every day problems and loss of loved ones. We are only human, and we can only take-on so much. If you don't take care of yourself, you will be no good to anyone else! I have to say, he looks amazing!! Such an inspiring man, not only for his incredible music and singing, but because he is so real and down-to-earth. I will love this Man forever!

I'm struggling with everyone saying they don't understand how he could lose his passion for music. The man is human and to have the strength of character to realize your personal life is no longer one you recognize as the person you've always known and that to get it back you have to slam the door shut. Remember the song he wrote about a friend in trouble , telling him he needed to leave this town before it's "TO LATE" . Imagine....a person who can actually take his own advice ! LOL, rare. Love is something you give from deep inside and when people start reaching in and taking it, telling you when, where, to whom, how much and how often you have to give it, it starts to wither. Steve had suffered some very close personal losses, I know many people do but during that time he also had the music machine reaching in demanding everything he had left. I am actually more impressed that he had the strength of will to walk away from it all than I would have been if he had tried to fight it out and stay. It shows what he valued most, not the money, not the fame, his soul. Being able to sit all by himself and be content with the sun shining on his face or jumping on his bike and feeling the wind caress his face. Living that life prepared him for meeting Dr. Kellie Nash and I'm sure he's happy he was himself again when that happened. Well done Mr. Perry.

Range, Pitch, Phrasing, and most of all Emotivness, which is what he still has even after the high-notes may be gone, the emotiveness is just one of a kind. And he is a dam good song writer and one hell of a class act as a human...Listen to mother father live - The end notes on why can't this night go on forever - The chorus on Happy Give....Defies logic back then...Happy he is back and as he stated not putting pressure on himself knowing he is just south of 70...God bless him and keep him healthy.

Love this man! So bittersweet that he lost his first love (music), then found the true love of his life and then losing her equipped him to return to his calling.💔

Steve is one of my all time favorites. If you want to check out another incredibly emotive vocalist look into Bobby Darin.

really asshole....hmmm maybe if more artists took a page form his playbook got out, got their head on straight and lived their life without the pressure of being in the music business they would still be alive today - Prince, Tom Petty, Michael Jackson, Whitney just to name some of the most recent ones that died too soon because of drugs/alcohol. But then you have the self entitled assholes who think these people owe them something and how dare they leave the band... right?!?

So sorry for your loss, I lost my Perry of 30 years 5 years ago this month. Steve Perry's voice melts me and I cry over my husband listening to the same song. I feel your pain. Thank you Steve for all the memories and I have to say I become pregnant with my daughter listening to you. Lol true Steve I'm so sorry for your loss of the love of your life, I also feel your pain. It's a pain that has no words.

I was just at a concert a few weeks back (Halestorm) and during the pre show when they play the "warm up music" over the PA "Don't Stop Believin'" came on... Man, the whole venue just lit up and started singing along to that song. So many people touched by his music, I mean every single person in that venue instantly got happy! I remember thinking how lucky and talented Journey was to write that song. If only we all could write just one song so inspiring!
