I travelled all the way from Houston to Toronto last week for the official 50th anniversary performance of this piece. I was hoping to stage _Drumming_ at my high school this year, seeing as I’m a senior, but things fell flat and on deaf ears, and it just wasn’t meant to be, which is a real shame. Regardless, seeing Nexus perform last week and seeing this piece performed in person were both dreams come true, and I’m super glad _Drumming_ has had such a nice long life. Here’s to its next 50 years.

A beautiful pilgrimage for universal art that will outlive us all. What a dream it would be to experience the vibration of Reich's work live. I also once thought to share and perform in a language people didn't understand, music. The masses are deaf to tonality and passion. Rhythm and anything from the soul like that done to advance our civilization will be ignored, denied, and probably shamed. You'll meet one every few years who has more than eyes and ears for this type of thing. They probably will just pass you by. In that moment you'll know you're not alone on that front. You'll have to take that sentiment with you as you grow and carry your same passions from within. Something as magical as getting to see a showing of this, being in the same room as people being both refreshed and enlightened by it, is a memory worth holding beyond most of what comes in life. It's our duty as a tribe of humans to play this inside, it's our god given conscious at work, and I can attest that it's nowhere near our maximum capacity. Keep growing, stay healthy, stay safe, and invest fully for yourself unapologetically. Just being out in the world with your own joy, and being satisfied with it... will gravitate those of the same prerogative to you.

When considering the music of Steve Reich, please also consider the music of the Indonesian gamelan.

Firstly, thousand thanks, large respect and a low bow to the creator of the channel. It is a great piece of history of the modern music and a great adventure for the listener. And to the Drumming - this is literally a breathtaking performance! For me - the best interpretation of Drumming I have ever heard. A work of genius from the composer and musicians.

It's easy to underestimate the leap of imagination Reich made for western art music at the time.

HaHaHa - made my day! Making it even more funny is the thought that someone most probably drew it in a serious wonkish state of mind without even realizing what they created.

Sounds like there's some sort of string instrument in part 1 in addition to the instruments listed, no? Listen around 7:30, for example.

That's Steve Reich singing. He's vocalizing improvised rhythmic patterns derived from the changing rhythms of the drums. This feature of Part One was removed in later editions of Drumming.
