Speaking as an animator, the animation is actually pretty good when they do close ups of Chance like at 12:23 but because the camera placements / shots in general are usually so far away from the models, you can see how poorly rendered it is. Although the puppy models are atrocious, I only do 2D and suck at 3D so whatever these animators made is better than I can do. Props to them, working on a five person team for a feature length film is back-breaking work

In reality, Chance would have been turned into a bait dog if he refused to kill other dogs. That would have been a lot sadder and more accurate to what happens in reality... Also, near the end where he turned and bit a person, he would have been shot dead in two seconds. These people are armed, and train the dogs to not even be aware that they could turn on their owners, because those that do, die.
@MASTEROFEVIL4 жыл бұрын
Well that's dark
@101jir4 жыл бұрын
So for all the effort and tradeoffs they put into the message at the expense of story, they weren't even accurate to what actually happens anyway? They really didn't know what they were doing, I had assumed that they at least invested into accurately representing the subject matter if they were going to take that much time away from actual plot points.
@TheGoldenDunsparce4 жыл бұрын
@@101jir Yup. Trying to make it a kids movie pretty much made it almost impossible to show what really goes on. These "people" are all in it for the money; if a dog doesn't fight or thrratens their profits, it's good as dead...
@101jir4 жыл бұрын
@@TheGoldenDunsparce It really seems like the producers weren't really sure where they wanted to go with this. Educating children about the horrors of dogfighting while trying to keep it appropriate is already a monumental task, kudos for the attempt. But it seems that they sacrificed plot elements (important for any good story, and underestimated importance for children's movies) for the message, but then sacrificed accuracy to what would have happened for child appropriateness, ultimately getting... not the worst of both worlds, but pretty rough. As far as the subject matter itself, seems the dog is dead either way, just a matter of time and how prolonged the misery is. If it fights and loses, it dies. If it fights and wins, it will keep fighting until it dies. If it doesn't fight, it's a bait dog.

@Death Omen That doesn't mean it can't be criticized. When you are selling a product for money, it doesn't matter if you made it in two days with only two people working on it. You should still have to provide some level of quality. It is not necessarily the fault of the animators if they were put under time constraints by whoever hired them for this film, BUT quality animated products HAVE been made by a single person. It would take a LOT longer, but it would be a higher quality result.

I really wished that Chances motivation was something different. Sure his girlfriend getting impregnated by his best friend sucks, but this just felt kinda strange. I get that he is pissed, but just going back to his owners and actually fight and kill. It's just like he threw his entire personality (with not killing) out of the window and says: "fuck it! Might as well kill." Edit: Also the training-montage Problem could have been avoided if the puppies didn’t understood what „fighting“ meant. Second Edit: Just thought about that: You know what could have made the City sequence actually useful? Maybe having some poeple around. Not for looks, but maybe people see that there are stray dogs and one is obviously hunted down by some untrusty guys. The scene shouldn't switch the focus from Chance, but maybe we see them in the background watching while he runs away from the car? That would also explain why the stray dog (forgot his name there) and Sugar end up at Haven. Maybe they started to investigate what was going on and found Chance wounded. I'm spending waaay too much time thinking about this movie xD
@aquabluerose77344 жыл бұрын
Totally. And yes, that would've been a great fix for the montage.

Also did he forget that they were captured by humans, and if they wanted Sugar to breed they would have literally FORCED her to breed by placing any horny dog with her to get impregnate her, willingly or no. She also expressed interest in Hannibal before any in Chance, it’s likely that even if they were still altogether, she would have picked Hannibal. They’re literally slave gladiators with even less rights than real world Roman gladiators cos they’re dogs, why does Chance act like Sugar even has a real choice in the matter when it’s more likely both his friends had to make a choice that would limit the pain Sugar would go through?

For a future review, I would personally recommend a couple movies. "Monster House", which has very much a horror movie sorta vibe throughout it and some honestly disturbing "death" scenes. "Terkel in Trouble", a more obscure danish movie that feels a lot like a South Park sorta thing with some oddly dark moments. and "Help I am a Fish", which while like an average kids movie most of the time has pretty jarring darker and more disturbing moments scattered throughout it which definitely make it worth a look in my opinion.

My favorite anime! The whole anime is nothing but a tragedy about the world's end. So depressing but also beautiful at the same time. Spoiler alert!!!!!!!! If you haven't seen me anime don't read further. The ending is even more tragic, the world is literally on its last legs and the wolves fight so feverishly just to open the gates of paradise. But then Darsha has to come and ruin everything. The world ends not in a bang but a whimper, but luckily Kiba just manages to let the world be reborn so they can get a second shot at trying to open the gates once more. :'(

How it can go to baron, brown, drab deserts to snowy tundras. There's a lot of rescues at the shelter in my town, rescued from dog fighting, or being used as bait dogs, or even rescued from being turned into meals. My friend had rescued a pittie that was bred for fighting (she came from a whole line of fighting dogs), and she became a total sweetheart, but still had trouble around other dogs. My friend's other pittie was rescued from being a bait dog, and she was horrified of sudden movements but again, total sweetheart that loved to sit in your lap. It's horrible to see the ways dogs are mistreated, and just how mistreated any animal is in general.

I think this sums up a lot of common issues with message-first writing. The story suffers because the limited time means that only so much can be devoted to actual story elements, which are minimized in favor of getting something specific communicated. Although this takes it to another level. Not only did they double down on the time limit, but it seems that they doubled down on making sure to have people that know the details of this stuff to represent it accurately, at the expense of actual writing talent.

Not bad perse just not quite what I'd expect from a movie but given the small group of animators it's certainly not as bad as it could look.
