Actually, the novel is way, wayyyy darker. The rats are everywhere. They sing disturbing songs in Coraline's dreams and everything in the other world is organic and decaying. Also the tunnel to the other world is alive. It's an ancient being, far older than the Beldam.

The reason Coraline has such calm reactions to these bizarre scenes is because of her personality; She’s innocent and wants to explore, but is slightly skeptical. Ex: When she arrives in the alternate universe, she just wants to explore, when she sees something disturbing, she tries to hide her fear, when she’s told she’s in danger, she brushes it off and assumes she’s tough enough to fight the danger off!

Coraline is literally me XD I accidentally cut my ankle TWICE in a row with a razor, and it looked like a murder scene in the shower. After it stopped bleeding(which took a while to do, and a lot of bloody wipes were left over), I didn't go down to ask for pain reliever, I just fashioned my own kind of bandage using another folded-up wipe and some string. My parents told me to get medicine and an actual bandage, but I just brushed it off and handled it on my own!

When a cat brings their owner dead things it's taken as a show of affection. Wyborn getting excited about it (although from his tone it's more of sarcastic goofy excitement) comes from the fact that he knows what it means when a cat does that. Even though he doesn't consider the cat his he still appreciates the sentiment. I've known plenty of cat owners who get excited when their cat brings them a dead mouse or bird or things like that and they're clearly not serial killers or anything like that- I guess it's an Oregon thing to be excited about stuff like that. it's like getting excited when you call your dog's name for the first time and they come to you, or you teach them a new trick or if you own a dog that was bred for hunting and they get their first kill. Things like that show that your pet loves you or at least cares about you.

To be fair, I think he was just playing that up for laughs. Wyborn is rather socially awkward and it can come off as creepy...I should know, I was/am like that myself, but you two have good points as well.
@ravenshirwood5201
@ravenshirwood5201 5 жыл бұрын
That’s a good point too! My only problem is that if it’s being done for laughs, the joke is at Wyborn’s expense. What’s funny about calling a kid a future serial killer? About calling him a mistake? Saying that his parents called him Wyborn because they didn’t want him? Sure, he’s not real, but if he was, what would be funny about that? Nothing. It’s just mean-spirited.

@@angelangelis8362 I understood that it might have been made as a joke, I just wanted to clarify that getting excited about things like that is natural- especially if that animal is your only source of affection- just in case someone might have thought it was weird to be like that.

Fun fact: if you notice the handwriting on the cake that says “welcome home” there’s a double loop on the “o” from the word “home” and it’s been said that when a person writes an “o” with a double loop in it, said person is lying, meaning that she IS welcome but she is not home ;)

What hurts is that Coraline isn't a bad kid or even a bad character. Her curiosity stems from her parent's neglect and her love for the other world and her other fam and friends at first is simply a cry for attention that most kids really need at that age in time. I feel like at the beginning of Coraline when the Beldam was making the Coraline doll, the Beldam was changing into the form of Coraline's mom, if that makes sense. What I mean is that in the first half of the song, you here a woman with a deep humming voice, (she sounds like a black woman) and the doll was a black girl (Wybie's grandma's sister) who was a victim before Coraline. And in the second half of the beginning, you here Coraline's mom humming the song as the Coraline doll was being made. But thats just a theory...

I think her reactions are accurate. The movie clearly makes it out like Coraline is not like other "ordinary" girls. She is a little weird, quirky and at times mean spirited, so her not really being phased by all the weird stuff and warnings seems in character for her. She is spirited but also has a sort of edge to her, so she just blows it off like its no big deal or all just hoax warnings and "tall tales".

Even though some of Corallines choices might be odd or don’t make sense, remember this is a kid who is bored out of her mind, has parents that are always busy or won’t help, and is feeling slightly rebellious because she’s still mad they made her move away from her friends. Most if not all of her reactions and choices make sense, sure if your older and watching this you would be like “why would you go through that tunnel” but as kids who don’t know everything like red flags and much more, her choices make a lot of sense and as a kid who grew up exactly like Coralline (I mean have parents who were always busy and just weren’t there when I needed help, moving away from all my friends to a old house and etc) I would of done the exact things she would of and had very similar reactions.

I fucking _love_ this movie. It was one of my all-time favorite movies as a child and it remains that way to this day (btw I don’t have a favorite movie, I have multiple favorites, but Coraline is no doubt one of them).

you ought to do a review of Perfect Blue! It’s an excellent horror film that I’d love to hear your thoughts on! :)

I love Perfect Blue but I dunno, might be a little too intense even by Steve's standards. There's a certain scene that is... very disturbing in a visceral, disgusting way. You know.

Fun fact! Most people speculate that the weird chorus singing soundtrack is french! But it’s not a language at all! It’s complete gibberish! Made up words being sung to give us a creepy unknown feeling!!!!
