I feel like the parents changing character was more to do with coralines perception of them rather than them actually changing themselves. Because the start of the movie only happens when they're particularly short on time and Coraline is emotional from having moved house, so all this could contribute to Coraline feeling that her parents were neglecting her and so see them in a very "bad" light. However by the end of the movie she does learn to appreciate them so instead of the parents changing character it's actually her unconsciously seeing her parents in a more positive light. This is only furthered by the fact that the parents busy/stressful time is over and so with the combination of coralines changed perception and the convenient timing of the parents relaxing it seems like a too large character change for it to make sense.

Another theory is that the Beldame had some sort of supernatural affect on the parents to make her world more suitable and attractive for Caroline, the snow globe breaking could represent the other mother's spell being broken that held the parents in a bland and irritating state.

The last time I watched this movie, there were subtle changes in the parents' behavior throughout it. Moving past the stressed phase in the beginning, each scene afterward had them gradually soften up a bit towards Coraline. Sure it's not the same as directly apologizing to Coraline for their gruff attitude, but you can feel they truly want to make it up to her while also calming down from their stress with moving to a new home.

Another thing to note, is that the reason they moved, is because they were struggling financially, scenes like how she looks in the fridge and sees there’s nothing left to eat, or the fact that Mel couldn’t get those gloves for Coraline initially, and theres also the fact that Mel had been in an accident that probably cost them a lot of money, there is a lot of tension because of the financial struggles they were having, and the reason their mood probably changed at the end of the film was also because they had finally finished their catalogue and was able to get a paycheck and be a little bit more financially stable again

A small correction on the CGI aspect in the film. Sarah Meyer, a lead animator on the film, came to my college to talk in depth on how this film was made. She was the primary animator for the cat. She stated that the end scene where the world was falling apart was actually small tiles being painstakingly moved from the model. While CGI helped blend things and put peices together in post, she explained that that scene was done by hand. In fact, the pressure was on that it could not be redone if there were any problems, so they had to make it count. Also, the animator that moved the pumpkins in the garden was referred to as the cave troll, since that person was under the set for the entirety of those scenes animating a lot of the components that moved in the garden.

Wyborn was pretty much included to give Coraline someone to talk to. In the book we have the benefit of Coraline as a narrator to communicate how Coraline is thinking and feeling. The movie can't always show that, so... enter Wyborn. His flight toward the end is also important because his presence during the final showdown in the other world would have been a pretty gross departure from the book. Coraline is the hero. I don't think I would have liked the story more had Coraline been brattier. Again, the whole movie is about Coraline and her perspective and relationship with her parents. And sometimes... kids don't always get along with their parents. That doesn't make them a brat, necessarily, people just rub up against one another sometimes. Parents are human too, and they get stressed and they can't always be supermom or superdad. I think I really enjoyed this humanization of Coraline's parents. When we finally see them again at the end, as a viewer I felt relieved to see them again, as Coraline must have felt. And yes, they are much nicer toward the end of the film, not because they experienced anything of what Coraline did, but because they were in a very stressful situation, caught between work and the move. But these things pass and the warm, loving parents that they always were returns as well.

I think the point with the parents is that they are stressed with some work, and at the end of the movie, they have less work and are thus less stressed. It's not like being neglectful is their basic modus operandi, since we see the mom taking Coraline shopping and trying to engage with her.

Or perhaps the ”neglect” is just exaggerated through the eyes of a child. Seems like a simple and highly likely explanation to me. I feel the same. Money was tight, Dad doesn't seem like one to think 1 dollar is an acceptable tip in the end of the movie. They are in a town where everything looks drab. In Coraline's mother's expression and voice it seems like she totally agrees with Coraline that the situation blows. She's not too keen on the "in town" area, but didn't have time to think of ways to make it better immediately after they've moved cross country after an accident.

They also had to move, so that probably cut their funds a lot (that's why the mom doesn't buy Coraline the gloves), and they have the catalog which they probably didn't have so much time to work on due to "the accident" and the family moving.

I think the parents were being shown through Coralines eyes in the beginning as well as the world and people around her. The difficulties of moving and losing already made her depressed and her parents stress didn't help. You mentioned the palettes between the world, but at the end, they switch. The other world gets darker since it's basically dead. The real world, while still dark, seems brighter, and everyone planting flowers is helping the brightness of the world too. Also, the ending with her parents being happy, makes sense for me at least. Yes, it does feel odd, but you do have to remember. They did just move, which is stress, add on top of their catalog, and Coraline starting school, there is a lot of stress going in, which Coraline probably doesn't understand. I don't think there is a better way to externalize Coraline's thoughts without changing the audience's perspective to third person. On the other hand, I think Other Wyborn was a welcome addition that helps the story more than Wyborn ruins it. Seeing Other Wyborn permanently silenced instills the possibility that the extreme opposite of what you hate isn't always going to be what you will love. His implied death during the game also maintained tension and fear despite Coraline every Other being so far. They also changed the flow of events because it no longer has to be Other Mother that releases Coraline after meeting the ghost children.

She takes them for granted and she’s right at that age where they’re no longer her heroes, but the ones who never do anything fun with her or for her, even when they’re just trying to make ends meet and aren’t opposed to a nice gesture when they’re less stressed. The whole perspective is that of a child and that’s why Coraline also reacts to things with a “huh, guess this is what it is”. Neil Gaiman himself has said that he finds it funny that kids aren’t too terribly scared with the book or movie, but adults are, and that’s because the world is big and scary for kids. To them, this might be a regular Tuesday, whereas adults are more aware of the “normalcy” of things and can tell something is wrong in the Other World right away.

I don't think your analysis of Wyborne is entirely accurate; the main reason he was added, is due to transition from book to movie. With a book, you can have a lot of information and character thoughts relayed through the writing itself, but you can't do that with a movie. The well scene would have either been very bland and boring without Wyborne, or would have consisted of Coraline talking to herself, which is something that generally ruins the movie illusion. So, at the very least, Wyborne provides a tool to relay information and, as you said yourself, it's him showing up to get the doll back that makes Coraline realize that the doll is a spy (the doll was another thing added to the movie) Finally, I don't think it's entirely fair to sum up Wyborne's contribution in the climax as just "he throws a rock on the hand", it makes it seem like he just showed up out of nowhere, when in the movie, he shows on his bike, in a scene mirroring his meeting with Coraline, and even uses the pliers from the slug collecting scene, to grab the hand away from Coraline. Then we get a struggle, with the hand attacking Wyborne and making him roll to the well, and Coraline trying to use a blanket to grab the hand again, but failing, and THEN Wyborne smashes it. As a side note, while Coraline's parents don't remember the events in the other world, you CAN see some changes in them as the days pass; Coraline's dad is usually very doting on Coraline, saying a song for her while serving dinner, humoring her stories about the other world and such, with Coraline rejecting this affection, complaining that she's "not five anymore". You can mostly see the hint of a change in Coraline's mother during the car ride and before leaving for groceries, where she's trying to engage with Coraline and make up for the recent neglect, but Coraline turning her down after not getting the gloves

@@cgkase6210 I actually can't remember, but if this is the case, I have a bit of a theory on this! So the movie takes place in the early 2000s, and these ladies are like........I'll say at the youngest in their 70's-80's. I'll say 75 for simplicity's sake, and let's say the movie takes place the year the book was published in 2002. And let's just say that their career was most popular in their 20's-30's (I'll say 25 again for simplicity's sake), so this would mean their career peaked 50 years ago. In 1952. Where being gay was a crime and you could be thrown in jail or a mental institution. Maybe they marketed themselves on stage as sisters to avoid people being suspicious that they're gay so they wouldn't lose their jobs and be arrested/institutionalized in an asylum and forced to go through conversion therapy. It's rather sad that they might have had to pretend to be sisters so they could live together and perhaps be affectionate and just pass it off as familial love for their own safety, now that I think about it.

She’s somewhat of a brat, that’s true, but I hate the cliche of ‘Bratty kid gets the pulp beaten out of them bc obviously it isn’t the parent’s fault that she’s a little shit, so she learns better.’ Having her the way she is now feels more organic, since she’s more relatable to people, and she provides a learning experience through this lens. Besides, wanting one pair of gloves isn’t that bratty. Acting like a passive-aggressive shit by talking about the Beldam is. Not to mention wanting food that’s different, as she doesn’t have the same pallet as her parents, and just wanting to do normal kid things isn’t either. She played the role of the kid who’s parents are hearing her, but never listening. But now that I’ve rambled, let me get back on topic: Most brats go ‘I don’t act that way, so I won’t listen.’ With the way they painted her, those bratty kids will latch on since they “understand her struggles.” They’re more likely to listen to the message properly, and thus, will learn much more openly

Id say the apparent “change of heart” wasn’t quite what it seemed for the parents. They had just moved, and probably spent a lot of money moving, only to have their first gig while in the new home be not particularly lucrative. They were struggling to get it off the ground with a reasonable time crunch, and thus they were stressed and snippy. At the end of the film they accomplished their goal, and thus were much more lax and able to spend more time with their daughter. I’d imagine their lives kind of wanes and ebbs accordingly, and is something Coraline is already accustomed to - but in amidst of a sudden move, to a place she doesn’t particularly like, it just makes it all the worse for her, and all the more for the Beldam to feed on.

3:28 There’s actually a reason that Coraline’s mother uses a flip phone (and not to mention a laptop) while her father uses an 80’s style computer. It’s explained in a deleted scene. To sum it up, Coraline’s mom tells the dad that he should’ve gotten a laptop by now otherwise his data wouldn’t have gotten deleted. (A follow up to that one scene where Coraline accidentally shut off the power in the house, causing her dad to lose the data on his computer.) So basically Coraline’s father is mostly an oldie kind of person. Sticking with the old technology he’s comfortable with. In fact there’s a lot of deleted scenes that adds context and interesting interactions/dialogue. It’s a surprise and a shame there isn’t an uncut version of this film. They transition so well with the undeleted scenes.

I don't comment usually, but I want to offer a possible correction as far as the origial author of Coraline. It is pretty safe to assume that Neil Gaiman did in fact mean to imply the two ladies as a possible couple. For example, in his Sandman comic series, published around 1989-1996, there were many cases of LGBTQ characters, though it was for an older audice. There were even a pair of eccentric women who live together and nobody can tell if they are sisters, lovers, friends and so on- though the reader gets something like an answer. He's often included characters of many different orientations, and even put out a kids book in the style of an old fairy tale a few years ago called the Sleeper and the Spindle that featured a romantic female kiss. That got quite the pushback but people defended it. Coraline was written before something like that would have been explicitly stated in a children's book. More likely than not, Coraline wouldn't have needed to know and female couples of older generations often did have ambiguous relationships out of nessesity. It was probably meant to invoke that time period/feeling more than anything.

The difference between JK saying Dumbledore is gay and the elderly lesbian couple is that we actually see them together, living together and having a life with one another. Dumbledore was never ONCE given a single scene where he was with someone he loved romantically. Even when it was plot relevant with the new fantastic beasts movie, it was just blatantly ignored. So no. I wouldn’t compare this to JK just saying a character is gay for forced diversity because at least we actually see these two together. Sure they may not be overtly romantic, but it’s more than JK gave us.

Rose still a little too out of the blue for me and I would actually consider it very much like JK, since even given that couples who have been together aren't usually still what I would describe as "lovey dovey", there's usually some sign of affection or tell that they're not simply just tolerating one another for some sort of benefit.

Even when their relationship was plot relevant in the latest movie, there's no talk about it. Plus, old couples bicker lol. They mostly have banter that def seems like they're just tolerating each other when they really do love each other. It's practically a trope at this point. Sorry if I come across as like, trying to shove this down your throat or whatever, but as a gay person who is legit pissed when I see queer baiting like in Harry Potter or Voltron, these ladies just don't feel the same to me. Maybe it's more affectionate in the books? The performance of a voice actor can def make something that was playful teasing sound more harsh, and this movie DID come out in the early 2000s, so it could have been toned down.
@insertname16675 жыл бұрын
Rose well I mean I'm bisexual myself so I'm usually even harsher with my scrutiny towards this sort of stuff (mainly because the idea of two people being good close friends seems to be dying out in favour of either gaybaiting or just flat out making a gay coupled when there wasn't one originally), and well it's a trope because it's an actual thing which I'd argue is a very common relationship style here in the UK between everyone regardless of their relationship status (so lovers/friends/siblings/etc) which is why I'm dubious to find this sort of behaviour even close to hinting at any sort of romantic interest because almost everyone engages in once they've known someone for some time.

What drew me to Coraline was the concept of a mirror world (like Silent Hill). The other world mirrored the real world in every way including the characters. For example, the real world neighbors were helpful and provided tools and useful advice. The other world neighbors were only enemies and obstacles. The real world parents and Wybie were never helpful to Coraline, but their other world counterparts were her allies (the best they could anyway) in evading the Other Mother.

Neil Gaiman has a history of including queer characters in his other books, so I wouldn’t consider this a Rowling.

Cools McFrosty as far as I know, he also doesn’t have a habit of retconning/revealing stuff after the fact so I’d believe the one or two things he said. I’d always thought they were sisters who’s husbands had died but I just had aunts like that

Neither would I. Gaiman has always seemed very genuine to me.

There's two lesbian couples, a professional drag queen and a trans woman (who has to deal with homophobic relatives) just in 'A Game of You' alone, Gaiman's a hardcore badass when it comes to representation.

The thing that amazed me about this movie when I saw it in the theater was seeing it in 3D. It was so crisp and clear that I forgot that I was watching a movie, not a gigantic moving diorama or puppet show. The 3D movies I had seen before used those red-and-blue paper glasses, which distracted me, but this movie didn't. As for _Coraline_ being disturbing, well, isn't that the point? It has a great Halloween feel to it.

I like looking at the sudden change to the parents' personality is just Coraline realizing it's not as bad as she thought. Imagine the movie from her perspective. If she's unhappy with her parents, what if she begins to stress just how poor her life at home is in her mind? She could be overlooking the good parts because she's unhappy. But she makes it to the end and is able to recognize what she had been ignoring.

Neil doesn't strike me as the type to retroactively diversify his characters. He's too self-aware for that.

The fact that Wybie exists is more so for a lore related reason, mainly to explain to explain the cat’s affection for him. The cat acts in a way where he actually tries to protect Wybie from the beldam because he’s actually a reincarnation of the first child to escape the dimension. That’s why Wybie and his grandmother’s backstory exists.

i think Wyborn was added to the film to make it less scary and "isolated", like it's been in the book, where you as Coraline feel just lonely with all this scary and disturbing things going on.

For the IBM computer, let's say this is the mid 2000's. The guy is a relatively poor and unacomplished writer that is on the daily grind. He can't really afford a better computer and to be honest, does he really need one ? He just writes on it, it's basically a digital typewriter but he doesn't need any better. If it works, don't change it i guess.

The mom was a writer too and she had a modern laptop. I think the dad was just weird and preferred the antiquated technology. There are people that still use manual Typewriters.

I watched this movie when it first came out. I was around 6 years old and with the divorce of my parents and being separated from my twin sister for the first time in school, I was in a very vulnerable state. I watched it with my sister and father and it probably gave me some kind of trauma. We were so scared of this movie, dreaming of it several times and to even ask our mom about "our other mother" (she told us about this when we were older and that she was terrified by that). Over time we only remembered the button eyes. When we got older we asked ourselves "what movie was it that we were so scared of and they had button eyes?". After some research we found "Coraline" and rewatched it. And I pretty much fell in love with it. To this day everything with button eyes makes me uncomfortable but it still is one of my favorite movies.

Okay, one other thing about the parents at the end: they STILL act irritable towards her. They never have a moment of, 'work can wait a moment, let's hear her story. Let's hear out her imagination.' Even after she saves them! If you'd put them about to get irritated and then a moment of pause and then they lend her a listening ear, I think that would've worked a little better

5:54 you just skipped past the best scene in the movie. She closes the door, and all is silent for a moment, but the door is repeatedly banged on and she crawls as fast as she can through the crawl space, but the door gets closer and closer until she runs through the door, and shuts it, with the sound of the door slamming against the other door being heard.
