My second favorite film of all time, right next to Akira, and in front of Beauty and the Beast, being my third. I remember, how this film was presented to me. My dad is a dentist, who owns his own practice/dentistry, and he works with a few different Japanese associates. One of them, had decided to give him the film, on DVD. And I remember him, bringing it home, one night, for us to watch as a family, and it changed my life, after I saw it. I was only 8 years old, but it had a humongous impact on me. Before, all I really saw out of Japanese animation, was Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh, on Kids WB, and that was really it. I have carried this film with me, my entire life, and I'm now 25. I plan to be an author, of an on-going book series, and I think this film is partially responsible to create that inspiration for me, along with many other things. Definitely one of the best films, to me, that I have ever seen.

Chihiro crying as she was eating the rice honestly makes me cry too. It looks so real and gets me to believe that this is a child scared of her predicament and just wants to see her parents. And yet she has to eat to survive in the world she's in. Hurts, man.

I remember watching this movie with my brother. During the ad breaks we were slowly transforming his bed into a fort... we hung up a blanket over a wire that was strung across the room, carried my bedding over to his room as well, and just has an amazing time. I must have been 4 maybe 5 years old back then, because my brother and I gradually grew apart as he got older... After Spirited Away was over, I begged our mom to let me stay in his room a little while longer, because My Neighbour Totoro was shown right after it... I think that was the first time I sat awake that long... I still remember the exact feeling I had back then, during the scene where the spirits first show up and it shows some of them leaving the boats... man... I wish my brother was still like he was back then...

Genuinely after watching 5 minutes of this, I really want to watch it. The visuals, animation, and music alone. The idea of the story creating itself is something a lot of movie creators have seem to of forgotten.

I always thought that there was a hidden metaphor about Chihiro's anxiety over moving to a new place and the adventure she experienced. Moving to a new place with it's own, community, culture and rules different than what you know that you have to adapt to. Even your very identity in this place can be uncertain. The people you meet may seem distant and even hostile to you, but as you integrate with the culture you start to form friendships and become respected in the community. At the end of her adventure, Chihiro learns the rules of the world, gains friends, and regains her identity. At the end of the movie her parents mention how scary it might be to move into a new place, but Chihiro knows that she can handle it now.

The music in any studio ghibli film is astounding and breathtaking, I'm glad you mentioned it. Literally one of my all-time favorite songs is Merry-Go-Round of Life from Howl's Moving Castle. There is something about the music that just captures the human experience and one of the reasons I find myself loving Eastern movie music scores, something about the way they tend to compose music just feels like it holds a greater sense of life. Awesome review! Glad to see someone enjoying one of my favorite movies (especially as someone who maybe watches two movies a year!)

Princess Mononoke is fucking amazing. One of the first works of fiction I ever saw which showed me that you can have a great story without clear-cut good and evil sides, and that a pacifist hero can be just as badass as a violent one.

spirited away is my favorite ghibli film, i like how chihiro is made to be very relatable. She originally was scared of change and hated moving but once she was put in a setting that she was forced out her comfort zone to find her parents, at the end she was no longer afraid to go to her new school. the scenes of her crying eating food just after refusing to eat it but only did because haku said there’s magic laced in it, the parts she’s at zanibas house crying because she’s worried about haku being hurt while she’s trying to remember his name getting frustrated and breaking down, and my absolute favorite scene when they’re flying in the sky together and hakus eyes is shining 🥺 (kamaji stating before in the movie that haku used to have shining eyes until he started working for yubaba he became cold) haku made chihiro brave, and chihiro helped haku find his way home. this movies values of “once you’ve met them, you never really forget them” since at the end chihiros hair tie glitters signifying that even though she may have just forgotten that whole journey, the hair tie her friends wove together prove that they’ve met and that they’ll always be together in some way. i could rant so much more about this movie but gah i’ll stop here

I've recently rewatched it and finally realised that I actually saw the movie as a kid. The only thing I could remember was the scene where Haku tells her to not look back while going home. For some reason I could never remember from where this scene came from or remember anything else from the movie. Same with Ponyo where the only thing I could remember was the scene with the instant ramen and how the put their bowls over the other to keep the steam in. And I'm counting princess mononoke as well, although I watched it at a point where I remember that I watched it the thing standing out most to me where mostly the scenes of the demons struggling, like all those black wiggling wormlike things It's kinda funny considering that I watched all of these at some point but completely forgot everything about them besides these few scenes

Same here!! I remember only glimpses & sometimes I'd see an image from some of the Ghibli films I watched as a kid. Several years ago, when I finally realized where they came from, my memory was re-jogged. I absolutely fell in love a second time, and made sure to go on a Ghibli marathon. It's about time I go on another one! 🙏🏻

The music in this movie was amazing, the scenery makes u yearn for some fantasy land, the food makes u hungry, the animation is smooth as heck, i cant find a single bad thing in this film and i watch it every year. The first time ghe family goes to the theme park and walks in the grassy field makes me feel things u cant describe. The train scene is very nice. I wish we had more world building to understand where all those locations we see near the train track are.

This is my favorite Ghibli film! Whenever my parents and I would go to a rental dvd store I would always search for this film, pretty sure my parents had no idea what it was. Thing is I forgot about this film later on and though that the movie was nothing but a random thing. Years later I was so happy when I found the film, and I was lucky enough to buy the dvd since other places would sell it over 40 dollars.

Wow. Was not expecting so much feedback Lol. Thanks! I grew up watching Spirited Away, and when I would ask if people had seen a Ghibli film, they would either say they saw Spirited Away or Kiki. I am biased though, this is my favorite film. Totoro is also iconic. My favorites are Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, Castle in the Sky, Whisper of the Heart, Howl's Moving Castle, and The Cat Returns. All the Ghibli films are worth watching, but these are the ones I watch the most.

the greedy pig reference is also an allegory for vanity. notice when no-face offered the gold to the girl she refused and he became intrigued. i always identified with that moment. so much in this world glitters like gold but when you check it out fully its just a lump a coal dressed up to look like gold. very amazing animation. ill always love anime and the stories and character development. there is always a reason for the characters and its always deep and meaningful. I wish Hollywood had these types of dedicated writers and free thinkers. their movies would hold more weight , would mean more to be honest. Hollywood use to have it. back in the 90's and before. its a shame they rely on CGI and spectacle to sell when all we really want is a movie or tv show to identify with...

This movie was on TV a few times in the past, i had seen only small scenes of it. A few days ago i finally decided to sit down and watch it from the start to end. This movie captured me, let me say that. Then i showed my 6year old son. I was a bit hesitant to show him because of some scenes but he liked it. I think it kept him busy at night as well, he was very active in his dreams. This movie to me is an absolute gem in many respects. The world that is created is so special that will probably make me watch it a few more times.
