This is probably one of the most unique entries I've looked at, a 2004 Danish film called Strings. Which not only utilises marionettes on a magnificent technical level, but also has one of the most creative takes to incorporate the marionettes into the world itself.

I remember stumbling across this in a 4 pack of DVDs at Biglots waaay back in like 2009. So glad I got it, it's such a neat movie. You forgot to mention that even their weapons and combat are all about cutting strings! The swords have that hook to better cut a string, instead of stab a body. I found all the attention to detail utterly fascinating.

There's one thing I love about this film that makes it stand out from any other movie containing puppets, and that's the fact that the strings are so prominent. Something about it I really like, they COULD have used fishing wire type strings that everyone else uses but they chose to use thick strings to enhance the experience

Just asking like: Is it because you find comfort that both of you are puppet? But anyway, the idea of puppet is kinda funny by itself since you aware of what you're doing & can realise what you have done without analizing things like computer. Similar case actually to "we're literaly all just some actors with scripts" while in reality we can have identity crisis of "what's my real specific role"

Something about the effort that went into this movie reminds me a LOT of The Dark Crystal. I'm not exactly sure what, I don't know if it's just the similarities in the use of puppets or not. Also, I'm not sure if this movie has been suggested to you before or not, but would you ever consider checking out "Omae Umasou Da Na" ("You Are Umasou")? It's similar to Chirin, but with dinosaurs and a happier ending; it was based off of a Japanese children's book and the movie itself is really good (Although they made several REALLY shitty sequels, You Are Umasou is the only good and important one). I think you'd find it charming, though it's kind of hard to find.

This reminds me a lot of the kinda world building of Bionicle. The medium understanding and not only working within its own parameters, but designing it's world around it's core designs/themes is such an interesting concept that adds so much to it. All the stuff with the focus on the strings was so interesting. A prison being a basically open area with a square frames as a roof acting as a prison for the strings and thus the puppet, the gate literally just being a small piece of metal that only blocks strings, and the act of amputation/transplantation. They could have easily told a story where they just ignore the strings, but they made the strings of all the puppets an integral part of the world and story.

the concept of the puppets being aware of the strings could make a nice existential film on its own, like if they have free will, then what are the strings for? Do they really have free will or do they just think they do and somehow the strings pull them in the ways they already wanted to go. Maybe one who is the main character decides to try to climb the strings of another puppet to see whats really up there and all hell breaks loose.

Awesome movie, to me it was a good send off to an unfortunately dying art. Growing up puppeteering was still around and use to go watch shows whenever one would come up at an auditorium where I lived. I can understand from a person who never experienced this art form much, viewing it for the first time make you think it's comical that the facial expressions are static but the same with the earliest forms of anime being cut outs moving on paper, you would get use to it. But certainly no this movie did not need modern movie trope such a slapstic comical character and yes it would have certainly hurt the movie overall. But all in all I'm glad the art form got to be in a serious mature story viewed world wide, the shows usually had to cater to children, but speaking to some puppeteers a lot of them wanted to perform more serious stories but couldnt due to the stigma of puppets being children entertainment. So not surprised that award was labelled as such.

So basically there these little colorful fuzzy critters that live in a bubble that flies around the entire world, "mesmerizing" kids (I quoted that cause it looks like their being possessed) and after traveling the entire world they go into a portal that teleports them into their dimension and they separate, into little holes to fully grow and then they pop out so the viewers can the upper half of their bodies then fart out of there holes. Then the chant "BOOBAH" for like 20 seconds while holding hands then the episode starts. Btw they can only say boobah so they Usually giggle squeak and make odd noises.

I don't think this is a good film but it is a very interesting one. I agree that the setting is incredibly imaginative, they reimagined the nature of life itself and I've never seen that done in any film before or since. And they were aware of it's implications enough to design these societies around it. I find the world of Strings fascinating and an example of world building how writers can leap into the imaginative and use it to enhance their stories. And this could be just my own interpretation but I find the puppet's strings a metaphor for life, it's something we all have yet is beyond our knowledge. We can give life to new generations but not entirely create it or bring it back once it's gone. It is such a precious, miraculous and irreplaceable thing and yet we hack away at each-others. Perhaps the slaves could be an example of how we are each given life but some overpower others to get more out of it? And i like how they are able to shoe the lifecycles of these beings while working that into the story so it doesn't feel out of place or detract from the story. But my problem is not just that the story is generic but that it's very badly told. (Spoilers ahead.) We've all seen films or shows where the king is killed by a usurper and the prince set out to make it right. But I can't remember ever seeing one where it was king killed himself. I think they should have tried to work that into the story somehow, think how the father's suicide would have had different effects from his murder. Maybe Hal thinks his uncle killed his father but find out he's innocent which throws him for a loop and when he finds the truth, that there is no murder to avenge, it leaves him at a loss of what to do. But they way it is, the suicide doesn't change anything, you could have had the uncle kill the father and the film would have gone the same way. Also the film seems to be about 2 children finding out their father and nation are not what they always thought they were. But the problem with that is we're not really informed what their preconceptions actually are. Obviously they love their father but what sort of person did they think he was? How are we supposed to see the reality differing from the preconception if we don't see the preconception? Indeed the very first thing we see is the Karo writing a suicide note saying he cannot forgive himself for what he's done. It's a dead giveaway that he's not a good man. And there are several opportunities for plot twists but they are not utilised properly. Like the scene where Grack tells Sita she was promised to him and the truth about the Lake of the Thousand Dead Warriors. True the Lake turns out not to be what Hal thought it was but, although the lake is mentioned a few times earlier, we have no idea what Hal thought it was until right before the truth is revealed, so it has far less impact for us. Would "Luke I am your father" have been so effective if hadn't thought Luke's father was dead for almost 2 films? And when Grack tells Sita she was given to him by her own father, so what? What does that really change? It would have been better if Grack had been making what Sita thought were attempts to kidnap her over the years and he father was protecting her, then she's given the revelation that he was claiming what had been promised to him after the Karo when he went back on his word. And the whole scene feels out of nowhere, it's painfully obvious it's only there for exposition. And while exposition is necessary for a story, in Strings it's very heavy-handed with a big info-dump in the beginning and people talking either about thing people already know about or without any prompting. And a few more problems... I keep feeling there's some world-building missing, with no one explaining who Essidain is or what the One String is. I know it only take a little deductive power to know they are a deity and a typical fantasy oracle and the lack of explanation doesn't really impact the story. But it still raises questions at the time. Given the nature of their world, it's not possible to build any buildings with roofs. Which raises the question of why they bother to build buildings or how they are able to have books or letters without them being ruined. And how can they have towers, upstairs and downstairs. And when Hal said "I promised a friend I'd use this hand for something good." When did they become friends? I feel like there was either a scene or a page of script missing. All the characters move so slowly, even during action scenes. And don't tell me they were restricted by the fact they were using marionettes because Sita's bird moves much better. It's the only one that ever feels alive to me. And at the end all the bird's strings drop off as it flies away. In complete disregard for all the laws that the rest of the film set down. I haven't seen such a blatant breaking of a film's own rules since the ending of Bugsy Malone. (Spoilers end) Honestly it boggles my mind to think these people were able to conceive of such a fantastic setting but not able to write a story to match or without so many mistakes. In short if I were a writing tutor at a university, I would use this film as an example in imagination and world building. And that, by itself, a brilliant setting does not a good story make.

Please review the cartoon "Alfred J. Kwak". It is a Dutch-Japanese children's animated comedy-drama television series though I think it's also meant to be for political education because they have literally Hitler in the show who takes over the town. I think you will like it.
