This was probably one of the greatest 1500's in history. The thing that made it special for me was that after a slow first lap the pace picked up and it went from being the typical Olympic final to being a truly great race.

@@stoolpigeon4285I think 1980 1500m was the greatest race. A fast last 800m with a 12.1 last 100m by Coe - the fastest ever finish in a championship

Thanks for posting this! I hope you're doing well Doug! I remember enjoying seeing you race at the big indoor meets in L.A. (Sunkist and LA Times) and at the Pepsi Meet in Westwood during the 80s - and at the Oly Trials.

Feel badly for Scott. A great runner in his own right, Steve had the misfortune of running against four of the greatest middle distance runners in history: Coe, Ovett, Cram(outdoors) and Coughlin(indoors). For my money nobody in history beats Coe on this day. At his best and healthy Coe was unbeatable at 1500m/mile.

Great to see Coe receiving a fantastic reception from the American crowd. Couldn’t have been nice seeing their man defeated like that but Seb was a class apart at that time.

It may have helped that Seb and Steve were known to be good pals. I’m a Brit but if our lads were out of it, I’d have been cheering for Steve Scott. I think crowds pick up on essential decency

Thanks - very interesting to see American coverage. Pity the producers switch to the long jump during the blue ribband event. Scott was a great miler. His best year was 1983 but he just wasn't quite good enough to get a major championship gold medal.

SteveScott tried going early on lap 2 and 3 to try and drain the kick out of Coe and Cram. the strategy did not work that particular day.as he said it felt like an elephant jumped on his back by lap 4 We got over it. Steve got over it. You're still the Best Miler America ever produced Steve! We Love You🇺🇸

Shame Ovett and Cram weren’t in shape for this race. Coe was great on the night but Ovett was (very) ill and Cram was under prepared due to early season injury and niggles. But then, I suppose it’s usually the case that some are less prepared than others.

Cram would have needed to be at his 1985 best to have a chance of beating Coe in the LA final. Coe by no means had an idea build up. Remember he lost in the trials to Peter Elliot.

@@LPCLASSICAL Coe had suffered so many injuries and such ill-health in the two previous seasons that certain elements of the British press had vehemently written him off for any sort of success at the LA Olympics, which explains his explosive reaction in the direction of the press box at the end of the race.

Coe is one of my all time favorite runners. Especially at this distance. I think he started his push a bit too late in this race. My favorite was Sydney Maree. I had some of my best training runs in my Maree Reeboks. 1500 and 5000 are my favorite distances to watch while the 10k and longer are my favorites to run.

Cram was not in shape to win this (had an awful injured season) but he should have made it harder for Coe by running to his strengths and going long and early. Cram was simply the best ever at the gradual application of punishing pace in the last lap but here he waited for Coe to kick - which was always a no contest.
