Steve Scott is an athlete you actually remember and who sticks out in the mind of regular runners. There's thousands of guys who have run a sub 4 minute mile and no one even knows there names even though they're awesome specimens.

Steve Scott was our best miler for more than 10 years here in America during the running craze of the late 70's on into the Reagan 80's. No dis to Maree, Spivey, Masback. Nor any dis to Coe, Ovett, Cram in Europe. All total standout athletes. However, and I'm bias as a former American runner..there was just something about Steve that me and my fellow runners thought was incredible about him. For all his success, he kept this quiet dignity about himself, and was always such a joy to be around. Particularly in Upland where he grew up, and then later my wife knew him at Irvine. At his wedding in 79 he wore all white and white running shoes as did his Kim. He was so easy to admire, and so easy to root for! His shy smile at you made you feel full of joy for him and for life. I felt the Lord was with him. I think he got this from his Dr Dad, who never really liked running, and his adorable Mother Mary who used to run with me on the Upland Euclid Bridal paths. I, like Mr Reagan, was very bummed in 84@LA after that fade at the bell..I know because I saw Reagan at the coliseum, and man was he rooting for Steve. He and Nancy looked bummed out for Steve. But ya know what..we got over it. Steve congratulated Coe and Cram..they kicked butt that day. But our love and hope and admiration for Steve never wavered or waned. He was our guy..and he always will be! Thankyou Steve!!🇺🇸

Ovett was a regular guy, just like Peter Elliott and yes Steve Scott. Tactically at major championships, Scott ran very poorly. There was absolutely nobody around that day that was going to touch Coe in '84. It's very questionable who all time could have beaten him that day, perhaps El G but I doubt Jacob. Coe had way to much speed for Ingerbritson.

Scott posted a 25.9 final 200, but he really cranked up the speed on the homestretch!

As great as Scott was, he was always in the shadow of Coe, Ovett and Cram.

Scot was in very good form here. Could have broke the WR if had the right pacing and commitment by himself. Very strong last 200m by Scot, beating a world class field. Even in 83 world champs he was finishing faster than Cram in last 15m and I believe could have won with commitment from 500m out and being in a better position AHEAD OF CRAM 500 to go and not budge. (Olympics he always fell apart, don’t understand that ?) Anyone can elaborate regarding his 2 Olympics ????

Ovett finished the fastest in the 1500m at Helsinki in 1983. Had he been on Cram's shoulder with 500m to go, he would have won the race.

Cram would not have let Scott get ahead of him at 500m or any time after that. Aoutia was stretching the field out on the last lap and Cram's did his usual thing of kicking from 250M out. Maybe Scott thought he could beat Cram in the home straight as he was having a strong season. He barely closes any distance on Cram in the last 100M. If you watch you race you will see Cram open a 3m gap when he goes past Aouita and nobody closes him down except Ovett but it was too little too late.

1984 Olympics. Scott knew he had no chance against Coe and Cram in fast finish and decided to do a Straub. But he just was not in the best form and faded. I am sure it must have been a bitter experience watching Coe - who he had beaten in 1983 - winning the gold medal in total style. Coe has 2 silver and 2 olympic gold + 12 world records. Scott has 1 silver medal from 1983 though he did run some fast times at his best.
