Playing the melody on the drums. Sharing accents with the horns. That's Buddy's signature. Mr Smith did the research and the practice. Great job of emulating, sir.

Lol i love how all drumsets were so huge in the 80's . Even the jazz and R&b guys playing on 6 and 7 piece kits.

So often I see people posting on social media about how Neil Peart is the best drummer ever and things to that effect. Of course these people don't know any of the great jazz/fusion drummers. I love to blow their minds and say Steve Smith can pay circles around Neil. And of course they're like who's Steve Smith? I say the drummer from Journey and they laugh and tell me I don't know what the hell I'm talking about. Of course the joke is on these poor, clueless bastards..lol.

Neil is a great drummer, and very technical. But in jazz, there is a swing element in your style that you need. Steve Smith has it, Neil does not. It does not take away from Neil at all, its just you can't play every style fantastic. Steve is much better playing jazz over Neil. Plus he was great with Journey doing rock music.

@@revelationsoundstudio Agreed. Steve can easily pull off anything Neil could have done on a technical level without a problem. But there's a ton of shit that Steve is capable of that even the great NP wouldn't have been able to execute. Not a bash on Neil. Just too wide of a gap in technique.

Neil Peart was a really amazing drummer, but more than that, a very influential drummer in hard rock. So many drummers picked up sticks listening to him. He was his own thing, no other drummer could have done with Rush music than what he did. Rush propelled him, he propelled Rush. He is why I play drums .

The other thing to consideer is both Smitty and Peart studied with drum guru Freddie Gruber around this time. This is why you see Smith's overall style and ergonomics changed here. Both ended up phenominal and well rounded drummers.

Wow! I prefer to watch and listen to Steve Smith more than Buddy Rich himself!
