Steve I worked in a small delicatessen when i was a teenager in the 70s and we sold Viceroy cigarettes. They were more popular with older folks like Pall Malls and Parliament cigs. Young folks smoked Marlboros and Kools. I used to be able to spot what a cigarette a customer wanted just by looking at them. A pack of smokes then was .60 cents. Customers swore if a pack went over a dollar they would quit smoking.

When I was like 5 years old, (born in 1980) we had this giant 6 man canvas army tent we would set up in the yard in the summer time and sleep outside. The smell of that tent is burned into my mind forever. Whether or not the smell is actually "good" is not not up for debate in my mind, the memories it bring makes it overwhelmingly positive :) Nice comment Koko

all these rations, even current MREs have this very unique smell. Its like a plastic...military surplus smell. I was in the military and this is what those individual first aid kits smell like at maximum level for some reason. The sunscreen in those things smells "nostalgic" too. I would use the sunscreen just to have an excuse to smell it lol.

yup but in the Air Force we had diesel heater no smell but hard to regulate the heat, heat setting 1 was about right dang thing went to 10 when we first light ours up we set at 5 like it said to do and dang if it didn't feel like sauna in the tent when we got back from setting the metal grates temp landing strip all day at 28 degrees out and with the USAF mummy bags holy crap it was hot so the next night we set it at setting 1 which was just right it was like an old potbelly stove and good to cook on, only thing I hated was the shower tents fring cold lol BUT yes the smell of the old tent that canvas circus smell and Movie night with the smell of roasted peanuts and pop-corn aww the memories lol the Army guys use to sneak over just to get cups of coffee, hot chocolate, caned beer and roasted pea-nuts and pop corn watch a movie then snake back out lol

Viceroy's are still sold in the US but are generally more popular in Europe, particularly in Eastern Europe, and Asia. Viceroy was the first cork tipped smoke, introduced in 1936, and the first cellulose acetate filter, brought out in 1961. The cork tip was supposed ot appeal to women so they didn't get tobacco leaves stuck between their teeth. It apparently worked since Viceroy was the most popular cork tipped cigarette by 1940. The cellulose acetate filter did even better since the filter color was white compared to the cork filter, which was generally brown. It was so poplar with women that Brown & Williamson, the makers of Viceroy, felt they were losing too much market share to women. In 1960, about 75% of all cigarettes were sold to men, so having a cigarette that appealed too much to women was felt to be eating into sales to men. In the 60's Viceroy was a sponsor for several different auto racing teams. They even partnered with Tag-Heuer, a popular brand of watch used in Formula 1 and sports car racing teams. Unfortunately for Tag, Viceroy convinced them to come out with a relatively inexpensive version of one of their racing watches. Tag was a competitor with Rolex when this happened in the early 70's, and Tag took several decades to regain its reputation as a super accurate racing watch,

It was a commonly sold brand from the 30's up until the 90's. It has been described as a Lucky with a filter. I smoked them on and for a couple decades. B&W was involved in long running litigation with the FTC and the other "Big Five" tobacco companies. One result was a an agreement with British American Tobacco (BAT) for B&W to sell off their low priced brands to a small subsidiary company, Commonwealth Tobacco, LLC. Since they weren't part of the "Big Five" tobacco companies, they weren't subject to antitrust rulings against the major brands. Commonwealth became the most profitable tobacco companies in the US. B&W's Vice President of Research & Development, Jeffrey Wigand, eventually became involved in a battle over tobacco additives used to enhance "throat hit" and also to increase the effectiveness of nicotine delivery. The brand used to test the results of the research was Viceroy. The president of B&W wanted to use these additives, even though his own chief scientist warned of the cancer risk of these high delivery additives. Wigand was, in effect, fired, but allowed to retire and keep all his company benefits in exchange for his promise not reveal the results of his research at B&W. After a year long battle with B&W, including death threats on his children and having a full time bodyguard, Wigand's unedited interview with "60 Minutes" finally aired on February 4, 1996. The interview and his documentation of B&W's using additives to increase the effectiveness of nicotine's addictive properties became the literal "smoking gun" for the tobacco industry. Things for the tobacco industry would never be the same again.

Let me make a few corrections on your Viceroy and corked or filtered cigarettes. First of all, Viceroy was far from the first Cork tipped cigarette produced. Though they claimed to be they weren't. As far back as 1911 cigarette manufacturer of Egyptienne Luxury and London Life in 1914...following by Craven A in 1926...Corked cigarettes were a marketing strategy for women so Viceroy would have been 25 years after the first corked cigarettes were produced. My family's brand (Reynolds tobacco) in fact produced the very first fiber filter tipped cigarette in 1954 with it production of Winston and Salem cigarettes. So Viceroy's weren't even close to being the first cork filtered cigarette. Reynold's tobacco's claims in 2011 that Viceroy's introduced the first cork filters were incorrect. Though they may have meant the first introduced here in America they didn't do enough research to back their claims. I'm not sure which website you went to for your information but it would be wrong in it's claims. Family or not Reynolds should fix this misinformation to the public.
