Check out this review of the first U.S. 24 Hour MRE ever produced, the RCI (Ration, Combat, Individual). This video has a nice blend of fully edible food, strong aged cigarettes, and full hazmat-worthy examinations of the not so edible portions of the Ration as well. The RCI was first produced at the tail end of WW2 with around 11.4 million in it's first production run. And throughout The Korean War, 104 million were produced & running at $2.00 a piece - that was no cheap operation for the time.
This RCI took a long time to find - I donated 2 to private and well respected collections, kept one for my own collection, opened this one, and one each to Oldsmokey and RC Gusto. Stay tuned for their eventual reviews as well.

Hi Steve! I volunteer at an assisted living facility, and we have quite a few Korean War vets in residence. A few of them were kind of withdrawn from social activities for a long time, then I showed them all some of your videos in the rec room one day, starting with the older rations. Wow! The response was immediate! Just like that, they were trading stories about their own experiences with war rations (namely, cream chipped beef on toast, or "s#!t on a shingle", as they called it, haha). They were laughing it up, having a great time. We probably watched at least 10 of your vids that first day, they *loved* them. Now they are the best of pals, socializing every day, and they're really into the MRE videos (I love them too, they're like living history). They really look forward to seeing them. Just wanted to share that, and say thank you for your awesome channel.

This is going to sound strange, but I often have bouts of insomnia. When they come, I can go with little to no sleep for days. I can't take most sleeping aids, and there isn't much else that helps (trust me, I've tried almost everything). Steve's voice is oddly relaxing and reassuring to me, so I can just put his videos on autoplay and close my eyes. No fail - I can get to bed in 20 minutes! But then I have to re-watch the videos when I am awake! It's weird, but literally, these videos are the only fix that eases my insomnia!

Hey that's kindof a shame ya got insomnia. It is not an easy thing to deal with - I hope it gets better for you and your internal rhythm equalizes. At least these videos can help a little - cool to know they can help in that way.

Loving-Kindness88 omg I swear it's the same for me! Steve is awesome at what he does but at the same time he's helping people in a different way too. I watch a video every night before bed and I knock out instantly. My girlfriend and I also bought a US MRE too cuz after a great night sleep I had a dream of eating an MRE pack lol

For what it's worth, my best cure for trouble sleeping is rigorous cardio exercising on a regular basis. Especially out in nature with fresh air. Head up into the woods and run or walk steep hills for a couple of hours. Really push yourself, then afterwards you feel kinda "reset", content and, come nighttime, ready for sleep.

This might sound strange, but I used to eat old K's and C's in my lunch box in Augsburg-Munich area of Germany when I was a boy. All the old keys and cans are as familiar to me as my face in the mirror. My father was a Buck Sargent in the Military Police, he would make a point of getting tight with the quartermaster as soon as he got into the company, a Sargent's pay would not always stretch to the end of the month for a family of four... out of date or going out of date rations were a good hedge against hungry days. His First Sargent was a real card... when he was promoted to Staff Sargent, he and the company C.O. hauled him into the office and locked his heels, dad was freaking out, not knowing what was wrong... the First Shirt cut his stripes off and told him he wouldn't need these anymore... then let him stew for a second or two, then gave him his new stripes and Top and the C.O. both had a good laugh! He went home to have mom sew on his new rank and he came in the house looking morose and holding his old stripes in his hand... mom started crying, she thought he had been reduced in rank for some infraction. I was the only kid in my year in school that ate like a combat soldier. I used to run to my lunch box at lunchtime excited to see what meal would be in my box. I would have to say that my favorites were the B Units and the various cakes. Beanie weenies, ham and eggs etc were all old friends of mine. When I enlisted, back in 1976, I was introduced to a whole new menu. Later I had the first LIRPS and MRE'S I got out in '84. Just seeing those old cans again is a real trip back to my childhood.

Hey Steve, honestly you are one of the last few youtubers with creativity and integrity. Thank you for not shilling ads out, your patereon links, and subscribers. You're here to make accurate videos on your hobby, and share it with the rest of the world. My great grandfather was in the British Air Force and before he died, he would tell me stories about flying planes, and the meals he would eat. Watching a lot of your stuff daily reminds me of him. I have a lot of respect for you, your iron stomach, and the work you put into all your videos, so thanks Steve!

18:46 - Chicle is the original gum base. It's the sap of a tree that grows in South America. The indigenous people tapped the trees, like you would for rubber or maple syrup, and let the sap dry, and then chewed it. That natural gum was discovered by explorers, taken to civilisation, and from there, became the bane of cleaners everywhere.

I was born in 1960, at 17 I joined the Military. During basic training we went on some march or training (can't remember now) but along about evening we halted. A truck showed up with cases of these things. We all had to line up, reach in and without looking grab a box of these for dinner. I came up with spaghetti and meat, more unfortunate guys got the ol' ham and MF's. I went through the box like you did here and when I turned it over the date stamp on that can was 1957! No use complaining, I was property of Uncle Sam. So I sat there and ate cold spaghetti that was canned 3 years before I was born! We had those later on in my tour as MRE's weren't out yet but the old timers showed me the trick of cracking the cans open, firing up the vehicle and heating them on the exhaust manifold. I think the taste of burnt oil and exhaust fumes actually added to the flavor a bit.

Back in 1970 in the barracks at NCS Kodiak, I kept a dozen or so C-Rats under my bunk in case I couldn't make it to the chow-hall. The boxes cost 59 cents apiece at the base commissary and I collected many of the menus. I sure that most of them were WW2 issue; the cans were hand-painted green with a brush. I never found one too far gone to eat and since I didn't smoke, my room-mate smoked all the unfiltered cigarettes.

When I was a kid, I would buy rations from an Army-Navy surplus store called Yates, it's gone now but the memories remain. My stepdad would get the cigs, Camel mostly and those Chesterfields. Another hypnotically charming episode. I don't know whether to be depressed or smug: I too was fresh from the factory in '57 - I can't compete with the peanut butter, but I'm in waaay better shape than the beef chunks.... a small measure of comparative philosophical comfort in that. I kinda miss the old furry forearms and nibbled nails, but your improved camerawork more than compensates. Well done sir, and long may you prosper.

In a vacuum packed can like those in MCI's, peanut butter will last indefinitely, as long as the vacuum seal evacuated almost all the oxygen. Oxidation is what makes peanut butter o rancid. If a ration with peanut butter is stored in a cool place, the peanut butter is good until oxygen inevitably gets in the can.
