Hey there Steve. Long time watcher here. I'm a disabled marine who joined in 84 so this episode was special for me. I had to comment this time because up until about 6 months ago, I routinely bought usgi surplus cases, but for whatever reason all of my sources either jacked the price for an a/b 2 case pak from an average of $75-$100 way up to like $250 now, or they plain stopped carrying them. The first thing I noticed was no Tabasco bottle. It seemed like they were in everything. The pears were supposed to be rehydrated in the pouch with your "canteen" water. Never seen them eaten dry. Ever. Hell, we all got a kick out of watching little bits of fruit appear from seemingly dust chunks. Strawberries were the best. It was like magic. The crackers. Absolutely inedible. They were disgusting and the peanut butter was worse. Especially chunky. Omg. I can taste it now as I type. 🤮😆 All the mains were delicious, the most unpleasant of them being the hot dogs. Just plain and boring and unheated, they really sucked. And we did not ever heat them up at rftd at camp pendleton in boot. Rip it open, wolf it down and off you go. Never even got to drink the coffee. The other thing we didn't do is shit!! 5 days. When we finally got to the end of the week, we were marched to porta potties and well, to put it lightly, sounded like a platoon of men having babies out of their butts. It was funny and painful at the same time. We all swore it was by design so we'd extract every bloody gram of nutrients that were in the mres. The new mres were like Hilton food compared to the mess we got back then but as you mentioned, science experiments. 😆 Being homebound disabled, it was a great activity for me to have one every day, even got myself a steel tray to make it easier to eat from my chair. I sure hope that whatever caused the explosion in price, goes away and they return to the $50 per 12 in the case price, soon. I need my mre fix dammit!!! 😂😂😂 Thank you so much for all these videos. Its really great for my day and mental health. Really. 🙏🙏🙏

when your food is so old it could have watched the premiere of Terminator
I remember in OCS (1989) during the final patrolling exercises in the woods, some of the Ham & Chicken Loaf had spoiled. We had already been in the woods (New Yorks Hudson River Valley) 5 days with constant rain, freezing nights, and half of the 85 who went into the field had already been medevacked to the rear with upper respiratory problems, broken bones (from slipping on rocks), etc. I was the RTO when a radio call came in instructing our squad not to eat the ham & chicken loaf MRE, it had made a dozen trainees sick and they had to be pulled from the field. That left the final miserable 25 of us out in the rain and the cold, at which point we gathered up all the ham and chicken loaf MREs we had and "ATE THEM". Hoping against hope to exit that miserable field problem via food poisoning. Unfortunately, our MRE(s) were all good and we finished the 9-day field exercise. I used to actually like both the Ham Loaf and the Ham & Chicken loaf. Some of the MRE(s) in the 80(s) had John Wayne Bars. They looked like small lengths of compressed 2 x 2 sections of extruded sawdust wood product. But they were sugary and yummy. Good times!!!!

I'm surprised no MRE company has sponsored your channel yet. They could send you MREs to test yourself, some to give away to viewers. It would be tight
@JefficusMaximus7 жыл бұрын
Robert Bisceglia I probably worded that badly. I didn't mean the actual manufacturers of the MREs, but there's lots of distributors on eBay and websites and stuff...I meant one of them. Steve gets hundreds of thousands of views per video, if someone were to sponsor a video(s) by supplying the MRE for free and in return Steve can shout out and give links to their store.
@SpearM30647 жыл бұрын
Jerf The three major MRE companies (Wornick, Ameriqual, Sopackco) all have their own lines of civilian MREs, but those are the only ones they can legally give away. Military MREs are "not for resale" and "property of the Department of Defense". Although, that doesn't stop them from showing up on eBay and in surplus stores anyway, and the military hasn't really put a lot of effort into chasing down resellers in quite a few years. (Not since Katrina, anyway.)

Freeze-dried fruit is extremely efficient, extremely good, and also extremely expensive to make. I miss it too. An Army Reserve teacher of mine let me have his training MREs, the first ones I ever had, when I was in high school (though he always stole the pound cake). Some of them had the last editions of freeze-dried fruit.

In 1978 we obtained two pallets of C rations from the State National Guard. The shipping labels were still on the pallets of C rats .February 1945 . We got them for our Scout Troop but then decided not to take a chance giving them to the kids so we split them amongst ourselves and used them for hunting, fishing and camping trips. Everything was still fine. We even smoked the cigarettes that were included in the packages. They were exactly the same age as your MREs , 33 years old. Oh yeah I just remembered we got an entire pallet of ponchos and two pallets of duffle bags. Enough for everyone ,troops and adults to get several each.
