Containing 5,500 calories, this British Cold Weather 24hr MRE has more caloric content than any other individual ration currently in service. Doubling up on snacks, drinks, and desserts, it focuses on being low in protein and sodium, yet providing 1,500 more calories than the standard British ORP, accommodating for the extra calories burned in cold climates. And also to reduce risk of dehydration - including extra drinks for encouraged fluid intake along with the body requiring less water to assimilate the fat and carb calories opposed to protein, which required more water to process.

well tbh. this rations are for situations... normally soldiers have better food... ofc taste should be a thing but with these rations if they need to use them they are in a bad situation like in some trench... in a battle etc. so they need calories normally the soldiers get meals from a field kitchen either a fixed one in a camp or one that can move...

Nah, Steve is just one though professional opinion, they should let all soldiers vote and make their rations from those they're the ones eating it. The Mashed Potatoes in this ration was really good, As a chef i would say mash potatoes should be dense where you still have texture of potatoes but also slightly creamy, if its gravy then you poured too much milk in or butter. The tropical nuts have no place in a cold ration, i can think of so many better sides such as Alchohol for example to warm you up or even soup. There was way too much sugar in this ration even for soldiers.

@@ranjanbiswas3233 BUT that is an old misnomer about British food being terrible, see George Orwell's 'IN DEFENSE OF ENGLISH COOKING.' THE fact is if you're prepared to make the effort there are plenty of delightful recipes from all the shires of the British Isles. AND if you want the best traditional British food that money can buy; you buy & cook it yourself. SALMON publications use to sell little booklets on recipes from round different parts of the British Isles. FOR me, a good home baked fruit cake, accompanied by a good tea, & a white cheddar ie Lancashire, Cheshire or a white stilton is still unbeatable. PEOPLE are too tired or too busy these days, & consequently eat more easy to cook, & takeaway food. THE bastardised rubbish that your typical global Globalist hotel chain sells is mediocre & average; they wouldn't know what a portion of mushy peas was if it was under their noses. PEA PUREE INDEED!😂😅🤣

I joined the British Army reserve in 1988 to 2002. So I experienced the old style “Compo” rations and the new boil in the bag ones. Both were good. But the modern ones better. Biscuits brown have never changed in all those years lol! We took on the Tobasco sauce idea from our American brothers though.

Having Served in a light infantry division in Alaska long ago, I can attest through many weeks spent out in the field that you burn a LOT of calories working hard in the Arctic. This would have been much better than the just regular MRES we got back then. They had Arctic MRES but for some reason we never got those, just the regular old school dark brown ones in the early 90s.
@cephalotus1013
@cephalotus1013 11 ай бұрын
Unfortunately, I don't think freeze dried rations are the way to go in cold weather operations/Arctic....at least not for 3 meals per day. Each require about 300-500ml of boiling water and take about 10-20 mins to sit once the water has been added. When you have a 8-10 soldiers in a squad/section that is a massive amount of ice to boil into drinking water unless you have access to lake water. When we trialed them we spent a ridiculous amount of time cooking rations compared to the traditional pressure cooker (which still takes a long time). Great when you have the time but not so much when you're in offensive operations. Of course, if you can carry an extra thermos dedicated to your freeze dried rations throughout the day that would also help.

I know the reason for using so much items requiring rehydration is to keep troops hydrated and to reduce weight. In cold weather we tend not to drink as much as we should, so by having food needing rehydration you are getting the liquids into them. The reduced weight helps to increase the caloric content, which is also needed in cold weather.

@kevinbarker6168 @excessemail2344 Those sound like excellent points in theory. However, when you're operating in below freezing temperatures you don't have access to water. You generally carry ice blocks or lake water (which isn't always available, depending on locations and if you have an ice chisel auger...6' of ice in the Arctic). Imagine the amount of time it takes to melt ice to have enough drinking water for a squad/section let alone double the amount of water to rehydrate rations. We learned this the hard way and it added hours to our cooking time. Imagine being on offensive operations and it takes 1-2 hours just to cook your meal. Liquid based rations do freeze into a brick but they were still faster to cook than rehydrating rations with melted ice. You could even thaw them in your tent the night before and keep them inside your jacket throughout the day to keep them from refreezing.

I'm really enjoying your videos. They are informative, interesting and you are a very well spoken individual. My favourite so far was when you smoked those British ciggies. Great job.
