That pearl barley porridge(you did not liked) actually was one of the main food in Soviet Army. Everybody hate it)) And we gave it a lot of slang names like "shrapnel". But if it well cooked, it has nice taste and smooth texture, it is very cheap and healthy. Some quotes: "Barley played an important role in ancient Greek culture as a staple bread-making grain as well as an important food for athletes, who attributed much of their strength to their barley-containing training diets. Roman athletes continued this tradition of honoring barley for the strength that it gave them. Gladiators were known as hordearii, which means "eaters of barley." I'm not sure if this kind of discourse is implied in modern army diet in Russia, but young privates still eat it a lot.

Having lived on C-Rations off and on for a year in Nam, I can tell you, the most needed item to keep them edible is Tabasco Sauce. These small bottles of wonder pepper will cover the worst ration flavor and make it something, while not enjoyable, but passable for needed energy, and satisfies the hunger developed after humping a PRC-77 through the jungle. MRE's remind me of when my dad lost his house and he said "Were going camping". We camped in San Bernandino mountains for about 6 months stocked up on canned food. Just as we were running out of food, some prisoner firefighters who, if i remember correctly, were also camping, gave us a massive bag of snacks and some MREs. After scraping by on spam and cornbeef hash, it tasted better than anything I'd ever had in my life. The blueberry cobbler MRE was like fine dining.

@@danromodawent back to LA area and lived in a homeless shelter on skid row for about a year and a half with my mom(available women's and men's shelters were seperate and far away). Got horrible foot fungus from bas hygiene, wearing the same shoes for over a year, and walking all day every day(mom loved to walk). Luckily there was a drive one day we stumbled across, where they took care of homeless peoples feet. Probably would've ended up with gangrene if it wasn't for that. After the homeless shelter the courts did a reassesment of how fit she was as a parent. I hadn't been in school for almost a year so I was put in fostercare and lived at a number of different homes, eventually I was lucky enough to end up in a fosterhome in a nice community with million dollar homes(SoCal, so not a mansion or anything, just a really nice house). Would have made sense if the MRE was 25 years old or more. Since then however, if they want to fight capitalist pigs they'd have to start with the Kremlin itself. Russia's pretty much laissez-faire capitalist these days, business rules all and the creme de la creme entrepreneurs are king, it's capitalist to an extent that makes most of Europe (and the EU as a whole) look communist in comparison.

With the cylindrical opening and the indents, it wouldn't take much to fit it to a stick out in the wilderness, wrap it in place with rope of some sort, and fashion a crude bow. Or just use it as a tiny spear head. Either way.

Recently ordered a Russian ration in the same style. Same packaging with a similar menu and exactly the same issue with the coffee. The coffee had burst and the entire ration was covered in a fine coffee powder. It was the same brand of coffee too: "KOɸE" on the label which probably just means "coffee." My best guess is that the pressure in the coffee pack was off and it exploded during air transit. The ration was fine otherwise but I imagine some soldiers would be pissed off without their coffee.
