2012 I was in Afghanistan with the US Army we were out in the field for 12 days and had run out of American MRe's.

Gordon Hamilton ye, here in Italy that cordiale, or "cordialetto" as it's nicknamed by fellow soldiers, is used for many things, in the morning to wake yo up, at night to warm you up, but the majority just add it to their coffe to make a corretto, the tastiest way to start the day
@higherkite

May not "physiologically" affect your warmth, but there have been many-a-cold nights in the field where a swing of alcohol would have "mentally" warmed me up. Every little bit matters.. Including playing big spoon little spoon with your same gender mates.

Italians tend to drink their coffee very sweet. The reason I think that the instant cappuccino was unsweetened is because the cordial (which was most likely Frangelico [Hazelnut liqueur] or Amaretto [almond liqueur]) is meant to be put into the coffee as its sweetener. Both of them are delicious in coffee (and on vanilla ice cream also).

Cordiale is 40% alcohol, it's not hazelnut liqueur, it's a type of grappa. It's produced directly from the pharmaceutical department of the Italian army, so it isn't a commercial product. You can buy it on their online shop though

Interesting enough it's 90% the same Razione-K (Italian name for field MRE) we had when I served in the early '90s... II/V DOA - Brg. SanMarco Sc92 Edit: FUN FACT, when guys where on sentry or guard duty in the winter we had a whole box of those Cordiale pouches (40 proof sort of flavored grappa), some commanding officals would actually ration those (2 x guard x 4 hour shift) but others didn't care... so some guys especially from Northern Italy (cold mountain regions where the locals drink a lot) would just grab a big handfull and stuff their camo pant pocket. Saw some fully armed dudes get pretty damn drunk 🤭

+UnseenKnight It's called "Pasta e Fagioli", literally "Pasta and Beans" in Italian. It's a very common dish in Italy, fairly simple and hearty. It was originally made by farmers back in the day, since the ingredients were easily available to them and it fills up the stomach pretty well. There's also a variation of it with chickpeas instead of beans.

A very serious point. Been involved in military mental health for three decades. The puritanical anti-alcohol virus that infected the US military post-Vietnam and has spread to nations like Australia, I believe, has added to our post-operational mental health problems. Western society has RIGHTLY attributed lots of health problems to the consumption of alcohol, but ignored the possibility that like any drug, in moderation, and in the right circumstances circumstances, may be beneficial or at least result in the lesser of evils.

It's true, but they are way further at the forefront of *actually* feeding the soldiers when off base. The US puts a lot more effort and money into the logistics of feeding it's military, which means theres usually real kitchens, food, cooks and mess halls even for front line marines in a 100% war zone. Even importing fast food places and chain restaurants to main bases in war zones

@foleymaj

I don't know about that. In Finland, our ration packs are fairly similar to other Northern European ones, but only a small ammount of soldiers get these because we always have field kitchens everywhere we go. Also, the rations consist mostly of commercial products, because if shit hits the fan they can be easily produced. Also, our rations are not really MREs, but rahter freezedried stuff. And if you don't have your portable stove (trangia) with you you would be fucked, there are no heating kits issued with our rations. I actually feel that US MREs are such because you deploy abroad, so it's easier to give you MREs rather than set up field kitchens etc. In Europe, (atleast for most of Europe) the emphasis is the other way, rations are not something to be given for your average soldier, but those who are away from supplies and maybe even LRP.

Interesting to know exactly how much these military rations cost to make. I wonder who has the most expensive military rations.

I found the best way to heat cans was to hit the center of the can on the side of my boot causing a dent about 1/2 in deep put 4 dents around the can, set up your stove and lay the can on its side this turns the can into a pressure cooker, rotate the can every 10 seconds or so, when the first dent pops out give the can a good shake,, then reapply to heat, once the dents have popped out give the can another good shake, pointing can away from you slowly pull on tab just breaking the seal, once pressure released open can fully

Cordiale have two meanings: it can be translated in English "warm-hearted and neighborly". But the second meaning came from latin "cor"-heart. So is a liquor that is good for the heart and puts you in a good mood and gives energy.
