My father was in WWII in the Army and fought from Normandy Beach on D-Day until October of 1945...he was drafted in 1939 though and remained in the Military for 6 years total. He saw some pretty heavy fighting all through Europe beginning in France and ending in Germany. Wounded twice and sent back into battle both times he told us many tearful stories of good friends and boys much to young and scared to be there dying during big and small battles that seemed to never end. He talked a lot about his daily rations and how it was the only thing they all looked forward to...getting his pack of smokes and much of what they ate had Pinto Beans in them. I suppose there wasn't too much to look forward to in those days knowing that you most likely would wake to bombing and heavy cannon fire from tanks and such. So this is particularly special for me to see because of all I had heard about them. Thanks for sharing.

Just to clarify, those bugs where probably after the fat on the cheese. They mainly go for that and cannot eat hardened sugar with their mouthparts. They also defecate quite rarely (we can keep on using the same medium as many times over if we raise them) as they are in a larval stage and need to get to adult quite fast.

Serving in the Army in Germany in 1963 to 1966 - several times during training and at our mess hall we were served C and K rations from hundreds of packets dated 1943 and 1944. As we left the mess hall the small packets of peanut butter, crackers, candy and, yes, small packets of cigarettes (4 in each packet) were there for the grabbing. Great addition to a PFC’s inventory of goods, especially the cigarettes - except they were so dried out… Funny thing, I was born in 1945. Those rations were older than me!

Steve. You have a great way of invoking American History. They need you in the high school American history class. As our new generations are getting lost or have never gotten it. Keep up the good work. Jim

When I was in ITR in 1970 we got a lot of WWII C Rations. The thing is - for what it is - it mostly isn't bad. The stuff was like 25 years old or so - but there was nothing wrong with it. It was made to last a long time. I would guess that Vietnam let them finish off their WWII Stocks of C Rations though. I don't remember if I had any K Rations. I might have but I don't remember. C Rations came with Toilet Paper and coffee. The problem was - sometimes I'd get ... something like ... Meat Balls and Lima Beans - and that was just awful. The problem was - no body liked them - so I couldn't trade. With a lot of the meals - some people would like one and some another - so - you had a real chance of trading with someone. Not with Meat Balls and Lima Beans though. Nobody liked that. They'd look at you with pity and go ... _"Semper Fi Mac"_ but that was it. You just had to do without that amount of your meal - or eat Meat Balls and Lima Beans ... There - the thing was - we were hiking our asses off - and we were hungry. Our Mess Hall was in one of those Giant Canvas Tents - but the food there was great. One thing about the Marines - was the food in training - in both Recruit Training and ITR - was really good. Later on ... not so much. When I was in Ordnance School - the barracks lost it's cook. So - like it usually does - the military just grabbed someone and it was _"Now you're a cook"_ The food was so bad I threw it up. No one would eat at the Mess Hall. We were Privates and guys were spending all their money (back in 1970 we didn't get paid squat) at the Little Exchange and living off Cup Cakes. They had to order us to march through Chow and sign the chow list - because they wouldn't get any food if they didn't serve any. The Officer who told us that said he knew there was a problem and they were trying to fix it. They eventually did - but it was really bad for a while. The Mess Hall in MCSC Barstow wasn't very good. It wasn't really bad - but it wasn't very good. It's up in the High Desert - and they served Rabbit a lot. Need I say more? The next base I was at - they had 3 cooks. One from the Marines. One from the Navy and one from the Coast Guard. The food there was great. They didn't get it - but they were up for the Best Mess Hall in the Navy Award. Then the Officers had this "Dinning In" thing where they all wore their cumber bunds - and they spent to much money on it - and have to cover the expense with OUR mess funds. The Cooks got a good buy on Eggs and we ate Eggs for 3 weeks ... They would serve them any way you wanted, fried, omelets, boiled - but after two weeks of eating eggs - I'd had enough eggs. We got out Mess Funds for the next month and things went back to normal. .
