I kept seeing this thumbnail and thought, a Tiger isn't a proper off road ADV bike, I'll skip it. But the thumbnail persisted, surprisingly I relented to the powers of persuasion, and I'm glad that I did. Of course, you're a much more skilled rider than I am but the Tiger held up well and managed to do more than I'd probably ask it to do, and here is the important part, in stock form. Thank you persistent thumbnail, the Tiger roars again.

Key words “if you have extra money to blow” I have 17’ Tiger XCX, about the only thing I am truly jelly of is the full color TFT display. I fixed my brakes by upgrading pads, swapped my bulky exhaust for Akrpovic can, and added AM hand guards. Bike is protected, sounds good and stops. To restart all over for a TFT display I’m not sure that’s really worth it. The 2nd gen Tiger is more than sufficient. To be fair the TFT and additional ride modes were already in use and offered by competitors. I think Triumph could have developed this years ago and completely smashed the market. Overall, my second gen Tiger gets the job done.

Steve_Kamrad oh no doubt. My bit is that it’s only been “refined.” That being said, the same engine points praised about before are being pointed out again. Good stuff, man. An interesting, relevant, real world review. Loving my ‘14 XC, but... the new gen looks worthy of upgrading. Lack of any rider modes and traction control on my ‘14 isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Really forces a rider to learn how to modulate throttle and clutch. Funny thing... when I’ve looked into ride modes on newer bikes, it seems the Enduro pro modes often involve eliminating TC completely. So I guess my ‘14 is always in Enduro Pro mode! Coming from a dirtbike background, I don’t miss TC (never had it), but I’m certain it can bail you out in certain situations. The big upgrade for me would be the suspension. Thanks again for a great review!
@steve_kamrad52166 жыл бұрын
Dan Steigerwalt thank you dan. Yeah the tiger does not need traction control but abs is great at scrubbing speed and handling rear wheel lock up off road in "im to deep and too hot" scenarios. it would be cool if you could shut it off at 1st gear only for the tight stuff. I love my 2016 XCa. They got rid of the horrible engine squeal on the 2018 added trick gauge cluster and controls. Put tubeless wheels and tires on it and it'd be perfect. Simply not enough for me to take a $7000 beating on trading though.
@steve_kamrad52166 жыл бұрын
Mark Jacobs yeah that's why I didn't push the 2015+ need to upgrade. I don't know anything about engine squealing, tubeliss would be an upgrade but all my buddies that have tubeliss on ktm's still run tubes because a rim dent could shut down the day pretty quickly. But yeah you don't want to take a 7k beating for a lower first gear and a updated engine and dash.
@markjacobs62946 жыл бұрын
I went down one tooth on the front and the first gear lag is gone. $15 fix. Yeah it spins a 400rpm higher on the freeway but big woop. Triumph just keep getting better and better. Had a 16’ and loved it but replaced it with the ktm 1090 and it’s even better 0ff-road. But the tiger was more comfortable on-road.
@steve_kamrad52166 жыл бұрын
kdemotorsports ahhh the old 1090 is better off road debate. At some point the 1090 is too tall, has too high of a center of gravity and just goes tooo damn fast. I know a lot of people are better on the 1090r off road but its essentially a 1290 frame with a baby motor in it while the tiger is 800cc frame and motor. When people tip over on a ktm i usually have enough time to yell "timber". Super high level riders are better on them but i just dont find myself confortable on them or confident in tight rocky situations. For instance the 1090r and the africa twin are two completely differty animals and i like the AT for some things more than the ktm. On road i think the ktm is great, a little better than a tiger 800 in the brake and engine horse power department but they're just sooooo big

The problem with that bike is that you don't have to drop it unless you're willing to replace the tank, headlights, or the entire frame since everything is welded even the dash holder...

So this bs a 990adv...thoughts? Ignore the age prices. I’d like to know thoughts comparing their road and off road characteristics. I mean both have adjustable WP sus so is the tiger close off road?
@steve_kamrad52165 жыл бұрын
I've riden really hooked up 990s and they're better offroad by a large margin but also hard to handle. Neither bike is good if you lack skills. The 990 is better but much much less reliable and wayyyyy harder to work on. On road the tiger is a power house.

Mike Rohr depends on who you are and who your buddies are. Also a modded 990 with s suspension is the best adv bike but also old and still a twin.

I applaud your concern over the loose (wild?) horses ...LOL never came across loose horses out there but my policy when encountering anyone on horseback is to gas it to get some speed and the kill the motor and coast well past em before I gently power back up and pull away as quietly as possible ....horses spook easy and I sure don't want to hurt rider or beast ...I also want those horse folks to say to their horse buddies "a lot of mc riders are really nice" rather than "I HATE all the assholes on motorcycles"

Regarding the stiff ish suspension you mentioned may need plushing up, do you think that is attainable via the clickers given enough time (or at least 75% i am not good enough to notice the other 25 heh.)
@steve_kamrad52165 жыл бұрын
Basically they could us more low speed compression and be a little softer on the high speed side. So essentially you could get there by replacing all the fork oil with 5wt and once filled to the appropriate level you could add 10cc's at time up to 40, to get more air pressure in the forks for bottoming resistance but honestly the stock forks and shock are really good especially on the street

just one question, you have tried a lot of bikes, unfortunately in europe not all the dealers let you run test bikes ( which is my case) , so between tiger xca, multistrada 950 or bmw f 800 gs adventure which one will you pick?? considering 60% of the riding is on the pavement and with a passenger??... thanks in advance and thanks for the cool videos Steve

Hello Steve, I have a few questions... do you find bar risers necessary on your own Tiger (Off)Roadie while doing your (off)road riding? Original they have small bar risers and the XC has larger ones, about 30 mm higher. I got the Tiger 800 XCx (2015) but the 2015-2017 original XC risers still are to low for me. I tried the 20mm risers on top of them and it was better. Also tried the Rox-risers 55mm on top of the original XC risers, but found out that the cables were to tight with them. Sounds familiar to you? So I will go back to the 20mm risers for safety, because I don't want to reroute everything. With this new Tiger 800 (in this movie) they changed the original risers a bit and added the 20mm standard on the bar riser. Did you notice anything? Was it an improvement? Was it enough for you, because if so than probably my 20mm rise will also be enough with my skills, ha, ha! And what about the windscreen on the new Tiger 800, would you change it with your height? Hope to hear from ya. Thx in advance! Greetz!
@steve_kamrad52165 жыл бұрын
Hey buddy! So on the roadie i swapped xc bar risers in and the sw motech 20mm risers. The stock one on this xcx are more in tune. Lower bars are better for hill climbs and sit down sliding.

Thank you for your review, I had seen it back in May, but now that I'm on the market for a Tiger 800 XCA I had to watch your video again just to remind me why I don't want an older model. I think you are very lucky to have great places to ride and give us a full insight of the bike's capabilities, I'm still not certain I will take advantage of all the XCA features here in UK but I've been thinking of doing a long European tour and I like to keep my options open. On all honesty, if you could compare this bike with the BMW 850GS what would you say? Thank you!
