Breaking down what went wrong on a Staircase lap fail

Swimming Staircase sucked, but besides losing my paddle it didn't go that bad. I break down what happened on this high water run at 7,800 CFS and try to cope with a tendon tear that will likely put me on the shelf for the rest of the summer.

After watching the original, I also started thinking about how it could have been avoided. I think your analysis is pretty spot on, especially the fitness part (my last swim was also mostly from low fitness), but I've got two additional pieces of advice: 1 - Offside roll. Don't worry about that power stroke moment. I mean sure, you eventually want to gain the skill not to flip there but I think the priority should be on recovery skills. You will always flip somewhere. The easiest thing to target to get your roll to the next level would be getting a really natural offside roll. Get it to the point where you get some offside combat rolls and you'll be way more solid. 2 - chasing the gear. I bet at least a couple people will say you should have ditched the boat in favor of your own safety, but I don't think you took any additional risks by getting it to shore. Definitely don't endanger yourself for the sake of your gear, but you can take an extra few seconds of cold water if you know what's downstream. This is way more minor than point 1, but figured I'd throw in some preemptive support. And you can train flatwater while your ankle recovers. It's tough but you can do it.

No doubt about it an off-side roll would help immensely. Something to work on for sure. I was really having a tough time getting to the start point to initiate the roll!.

How was the hike out? I know there’s some damn near impossible spots to climb up to the road. Bummer about the season, but I appreciate the optimistic outlook. You win some, you lose some.

I was able to climb myself & my boat out pretty easily & another boater stopped to give me a ride down to my car.
