Arlo Pro 2.. The KING of DIY Camera Systems

We have been using the Arlo Pro system to protect our cottage for 2 years now. No problems at all unless the power goes out, and the Internet goes down, which doesn’t happen often. Interior camera is plugged in always. Exterior cameras on battery and we recharge about every 6 months. We have not had problems at very sub-zero temperatures, although some report this. I think Lithium batteries don’t work well in extreme cold.

Hi Steve! Great Video and tips, can I just have it record to an attached hard drive without it loading to the cloud? AND do you see a problem with painting the housings different colors? I'd like to run them without the cloud aspect as my internet is painfully slow and that would be a problem for me. Is there another system you recommend with multiple cameras that can be saved directly to a resident hard drive system instead of cloud service. Thanks and thumbs UP!

Hi Frederick, That's a really good question. I don't know if you can turn off the cloud recording with the Pro2. Let me look into that and i'll get back to you. As for other options, eufy cam doesn't have cloud storage but their base station only takes a SD card and not an actual external hard drive. If i remember correctly, you can get about 6 month of recording with 2 cameras. These don't work at all without internet. Mine is a constant frustration. Here is some good honest advise. The time it take to install a proper reliable wired system is worth it. It will save you time and so so much frustration.

Great video Steve. I bought a 3 camera system and set it up. Video is great, but using it for 2 way talk was horrible. I can barely hear the volume from the cameras when talking to to it. I called support and they tried to help, but this is a known issue with Samsung phones. It is a whisper when speaking to anyone through the camera. The web interface is fine, just our Samsung phones. We have a S10, s9, and s8. All were a whisper. If you are spending this kind of money, everyone needs to be aware of this known issue.

I had exactly the same problems. They are a joke as as security system. System works some of the time. Live view sometimes takes up to a minute to stream! Really frustrating.

One huge advantage if you move you can take them with you. They can be easily stolen you need to keep that in mind, there was a guy here in my town who was making a living doing just that. You will be surprised at how simple a system he used to steal them ( I will not explain it) he was basketball tall so that helped, he is now behind bars. You can get creative hiding them in flower pots, one can cut a hole in a cheap pot then camouflage with paint, and so on.

I was impressed with the camera setup several years ago. The they have Netgear on side of camera...anyway, I had one give me slight issues of staying online and last week it shut down. I have tried to re sync it but to no avail....any suggestion?

Great Video Steve! Thank you for putting it together. I have 3-Arlo Pro cameras and added 2-Arlo Pro 2 cameras few years ago, it is working good for me. I understand you could activate all cameras or you could activate 1-camera only for monitoring activities. What I have been looking for is how to set up 2-cameras of the 5-cameras to only to get activated when activities are detected. For example: A camera at the front door and in a camera in the garage will get activated when motion/sound are detected and will come-on. I haven’t got a luck in that set-up. Could you comment if can such set up like that?

Hello - I saw a note somewhere while researching that arlo PRO 2 says activity zones work "When plugged in and used Inside". Have you used Arlo Pro 2 with activity zones plugged in Outside - and has it work successfully? Or does the type of cord affect activity zones- i.e. if you use a weatherproof cord the activity zone feature does not work? Thank you so much for your videos and answering this question! Jim

Hi Jim, Activity Zones require the camera to be plugged in. It doesn't matter if it's inside or outside. I plugged my in outside and it worked fine. Hope that helps. :)

Steve I have had some problems with my videos not showing up in my library. I was on the phone with Arlo for 45 minutes and their advice was to give it 24 to 48 hours. Has anyone else had anything problem with this? I'm thinking about returning my system back to Costco. Any help thoughts or suggestions would be great.

If it's not showing up i would assume that nothing was recorded. I haven't had this issues with the Ulta but i have noticed it 1-2 times with the Pro 2 when i was trying to make a video and use that demo footage. In a normal use case i probably wouldn't know if something was missing unless it was an event that i really wanted to go back and watch.

Steve DOES I did go with a Wasserstein wall mount to provide a more secure mounting location for my camera over my garage. These are my go to cameras at the moment for outside of my home.

Great video. I was going to update to the Pro 2 (I currently have the first-generation Arlo), but I see the cameras still have the lag issue. In other words, the cameras don't start recording the instant motion is detected. I know if you plug the camera into a power source they will give you a 3-second preview, but this sort of defeats having a "wireless" system!

@@SteveDOES I returned my arlo pro 2. 1. Batteries only last 2 to 3 days with somewhat busy motion sensing. 2. After a week I went outside @night to test the motion sensor. I walked infront and nothing. I drove out the driveway at night and nothing at max sensitive. In the daylight it started working but I returned them.

I heard back from tech support and adding the ultra system to the pro 2 system counts as a running total of cameras so any total after 5 cameras will required a subscription..also you have to run the "ULTRA" base to run the new cameras, but the new base will also run the older camera versions @@SteveDOES

The only thing I don’t like about these battery operated cameras is the fact that you have to change the batteries every couple of months. I had to return my Arlo Pro 2 and I ended up getting the Armorax camera, the outdoor one, it’s not battery operated, but it has a better picture quality and does everything I need from a security camera.

When i read 1,2, 4 Months that the battery would last, that sounded like a really long time. Now that i'm living it, it's not really that long. haha BUT the appeal to these are that you can put there anywhere and the ease of installation. Armorax are much nicer and the way to go for high quality video but, now i'm having to run wires and drill holes under the eves and into walls. which actually might be worth it for me. Hmm, i'll start looking into this. :)

Man I purchased the Arlo Pro 2 in no small part due to this review. But damn man these have been nothing but a massive headache. It worked great for 1 day, but ever since the motion detection has stopped working and its just been so frustrating trying to get this to work again, and if you go search the Arlo forum, apparently I'm not the only one and its a recurring problem. I wanted to like these, I loved the wireless feature and the fact that you are not required to subscribe to their service. Going to look for something else.

I am just about to get the Arlo Pro2 from Costco then I started reading the comments from the Costco review. On most of the 1 rating comment based on the scale 1 to 5 (5 is the best). They complained of the reliability of the camera. How often did the camera missed the recording? One said he seen the car coming into his driveway but did not see the car leave. Does the Arlo Pro2 camera record 80% or 90% Or 95% of the time? None of the utube mentioned about the reliability of the camera. Another Costco user complained was you needed to reboot the system as often as every other two day. Another big issue is the Costco package of the Arlo Pro2 base unit. It is a cheaper unit without the usb interface. No more local recording feature. Because of all these comments to put into consideration I have decided to wait some more before I am back into buying another wireless security camera.

Yes. These cameras tend to do that. Not just that, the 2 way communication is non existent. Arlo has had issues with the speakers on its cameras. They are not loud at all. Sounds like you are whispering. I returned mine

Hey Frankie, as EZ said, 7 days are free for up to 5 cameras but you can pay $10 a month for 30 days of recording and $15 for 60 days. You can also add your own external drive. I haven’t tested that yet but when I do I’ll make a video with the details.

Hi Charming GuzMan, I'm glad you like the videos. Recording to the external drive only happens when a sensor (motion/audio) is triggered. Continuous video recording, or CVR, is a feature that is unlocked with a paid plan, unfortunately. It ranges from $12 (14days) to $35 (60days) a month and from what i'm reading CVR is cloud based only. Even if you paid for the service you still wouldn't be able to record to an external drive. Another thing to keep in mind is that you pay for CVR per camera so that can add up quick if you want it for all cameras. Don't waste your hard earned cash on these cameras. You will regret it. Nothing works as it should, battery life is shorter than advertised, geofencing is a struggle. Support is none existant!

THis cameras completely unreliable. It misses essential clips right when you needed it the most. For example, I was looking for a certain time clip that I can find out what happened to my paperwork clipped on the board. Sure enough, right when I narrowed down to the time when my paper disappeared, camera did not record anything, and, for some reason, for the next 2 days there are no recordings, but then it was recording again. Its not the only time I needed this camera to work and it didn't. Hate it.

Steve, I have the original Arlo Series camera system. It is about 3 years old, and it was extremely disappointing. There were 3 cameras, I am down to 1. I believe , due to rain, 2 of the cameras got water logged, and ultimately died. **There are multiple problems with this first series. IF you were me, would you buy the Arlo Pro 2? Im good with 1080, and the other features provided when they are locally powered, and the free cloud storage. is the Arlo Pro2 a quality product? what would you buy if you were me? (not going Ultra) is there a decent competitor here? BTW, i think Arlo does not care about their early adopter customers, as they dont offer any buyback or ugrades as an incentive to stay in their ecosystem Great videos, thanks

Please be aware that this system will not notify you if it falls offline (and it does so frequently), so it is basically completely useless as a security system. This should absolutely not be the case with a cloud based system.

The system are for the lazy or women I believe, I rather run a hard wire camera in which I won't have to pay a monthly subscription. I Won't have to worry about batteries and can always access live or pre-recorded material. Nice, but with a little extra work on a hardwired system, you'll save a lot of money plus It will be a lot more reliable.

This is all you need, everyone is different some people rent and can't poke holes where ever they please so please stfu by your logic you should go back to wired phones with no apps as no need to charge em and they never lose signal.

Don't buy an Arlo!!! The new app they released is a hot steaming pile of garbage!!!! I get about 25 notifications a day while I'm at work but when i go into the app to watch the video its not there! I will only get maybe about 4 videos out of 25. 70% the time when i try to watch the cameras live it doesn't connect and just times out. The talk back feature is useless, its barely audible!!! Prior to the new app Arlo forced on everyone the system worked great! Now its nothing but a paperweight. DO NOT BUY THIS GARBAGE PRODUCT!!!
