For me it was the Kenner Close-n-Play. It influenced me to buy a Technics PL-something or other that played records in any position. I used to put on a record and amaze my friends by picking it up(carefully) and turning it upside down while the record was playing. I wish I still had it, the straight line tracking really gave it good sound.

This is very interesting VLOG, Steve. Although I won't upload Pics, I created the following system in the COVID Hibernation era (2020-2022) in my Finished Basement / Mancave used for listening and for playing my drums too. I resurrected playing Drums after a 50 Year Hiatus [1969], 71 yo now, playing drums about 1 hour a day as a retirement pleasure. I purchased the equipment in various segments and fortunately using Amazon which gave me a generous Return policy. I have finally settled on the following: Denon DRA-800H Receiver (only using it for Stereo music for now); Tascam CD -RW 900MKII CD player / recorder; Tascam 202 MK VII - double Cassette recorder / player; Audio-Technica LP120XBT - USB TT with a Nagaoka MP110H Cartridge 9an upgrade for the standard AT 95); IOTA SA3 / PA3 Stack; Emotiva A300 AMP; Four Pairs of Bookshelf Speakers: 1 Pair of Elac Debut 6.2s; 1 pair of Elac Reference Debut 6.2s; 1 pair of Fluance Signature Series; 1 pair of KEF Q350s; 1 Monoprice 60 WATT SW Schiit Mani (phonoe preamp) Lok (4 - band Eq)i, and Saga (preamp). The configuration currently being used : Denon connected to 2 pairs of speakers - Elac Reference & the Fluances; The IOTA stack and Emotiva Amp (also stacked) - connected to 1 pair of Elac Debuts and 1 pair of KEF Q350s, respectively. I used only 14 Guage Copper speaker wire. The Denon plays in the rear closer to the Drum Kit; the other system plays in the front. I play separately and at times - simultaneously. It sounds like a Concert Hall. I know doing this is a No-No in Audiophiliac Land, But, it sounds Great to me. The "front side " system (IOTA Stack) is used frequently to stream Music. The IOTA has an excellent BT Dongle that hooks up very easily with my Echo which i use to direct what I want to Play via Streaming. Happy New Year All, Happy Music Listening.

Glad to see the Lego Saturn V in one guy's system. Cool. Also neat to see all the things people have done to treat their rooms, some stealth, others with "regular suspects". It is good to know that more and more people get that their room is at least as important as any of their other components. Neat stuff here. Always nice to come across stuff I'm not familiar with.

Possibly it's just me, but watching this video I get the feeling that these hifi systems are mostly in the wrong rooms. Or, if you like, these hifi systems were acquired to impress the neighbor. Speaker size vs room, speaker position in the room, and so on. I'm not even going to talk about the subwoofers.

@@SteveGuttenbergAudiophiliac No. I have a modest hifi system, Audiolab pre and two amps, bi-amp and bi-wired, Monitor Audio Silver, Denafrips Ares II, JRiver software and I only use files (flac 16bit, 24bit and DSD). I have the speakers millimetrically positioned in an empty and symmetrical space (between me the loudspeakers). I have a modest acoustic treatment on the side walls next to the speakers. A lot of what you showed is way better than what I have. But what I wrote earlier seems logical to me. In some way and given your professional background, I suspect you will have a similar opinion to mine.

It's worth noting, relocating gear cabinetry from the area around and between the loudspeakers, can yield 𝙝𝙪𝙜𝙚 performance benefits. I was reluctant to do it the first time, but in the 80's I finally removed an a/v cabinet similar to @7:57 ... from between my L-and-R mains, 𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙮𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙜 improved! As expected imaging improved, plus the opening up dimensionally, front to back, left to right, was even better. But the biggest new found attribute was removing a subtle resonant blurr that layed atop the playback... I could not believe it. I knew imaging/soundstaging should improve, but never would've thought it'd make that much difference ... lifting away this subtle blurring obfuscation was a revelation. It was an apartment, renovated 1873 Horace Mann School #13, 14' high ceilings. I got the apartment because of the room. I had my speakers way out into the room ... scrapping that A/V cabinet out of the middle was amazing. @16:04 well done! Thanks everyone for sharing, Steve thanks for compiling, to the podcast I go ...

I like the dichotomy of Caleb's system ( @10:50 ), where his high end is juxtaposed by the Fisher Price Phonograph. How many of us started at a young age with something similar? At age 4 or 5, my favorite thing to play with was the GE portable phonograph w/AM radio built in. So what if it was mono? Sam and Dave sounded great!

Hi Steve, as an audio salesman, expert, have you ever run across someone that can't hear a proper center image? As much as I try, at home, in various rooms, stores, and so on, things that should be directly between the speakers always shift to the left. I had my hearing checked and that didn't reveal anything that could account for it. I've essentially given up on high end 2-channel because of this....I'm resigned myself to listening via AirPods and Sonos.
@SteveGuttenbergAudiophiliac
@SteveGuttenbergAudiophiliac Жыл бұрын
Kurt, in the early stereo days some folks used three speakers, left, center and right. Today you could easily do that with an AV receiver. The center speaker will give you what you're looking for.

@@TheDanEdwards I'll try. I have an old Stereophile test disc that has a center image recording on it. I don't really notice the problem when I have ear buds in, but it's very frustrating trying to listen to high end set ups. Vocals, other things that should be dead center are pretty far off. If I sit off to the side I can force the image closer to center.

It's a tough situation that I made work. 2 completely separate systems in 1 room. I used to have a dedicated theater room for the 5.1 setup, which includes the Pendragons and the SVS sub below the center channel driven by a Yamaha pre/pro and Parasound a52+ with a 100" acoustically transparent drop-down screen. The 2.2 system is driven by a tube integrated amp and a tube DAC with a Node2i into the Moabs and dual 4-10 subs. I had to move and this is a "just for now" situation until my son graduates. I do have a ton of room treatments from ATS Acoutics, but you can't see from this photo (1st reflection points and the back wall). It's not an ideal situation, but works for now and sounds pretty darn good. Hope this clarifies things for you.
