I was a professional drummer for 10-years. Professional-level recording studios and stages both have subwoofers to round out the bottom of the sound. A lot of your complaints are, interestingly, based on how albums are mixed and mastered differently. That's why some songs are boomy and some songs aren't. Beyond that and beyond personal listening tastes, boominess can be caused by tuning frequency of the enclosure, the size of the sub, or even the power being driven to it. If you have a 12" sub in a large ported enclosure, running 400w, it's going to boom. If you have an 8" sub is a small sealed enclosure, running off of 60w, it's going to be tighter and probably fit better with a home stereo. Bass isn't just for bassheads with over-sized car stereo systems. Having a subwoofer is actually how you get that studio-accurate reproduction you're looking for. You just need to find that one that works for your personal tastes.

If you are thinking about adding subwoofers to your hi-fi stereo, I would *strongly* consider getting an acoustic measuring microphone, such as the miniDSP UMIK-1. Yes you can tune by ear, but the microphone takes all the guesswork out of it, especially when you run a couple of subwoofers since you will want to change the phase and volume settings until you nail the right combination.

You don't leave the ground floating on a PASS amp. You utilize the white ground terminal on the back of the amp. Try the high level again. I also suggest upgrading the high level cable to the Rel baseline blue cable makes a huge difference.

Sub not only can give you more bass, but it can also deal with the room's dips and peaks, before I added sub to my system, I had severe dips in the 35 to 40hz region, and a bit less severe on the 45hz, and a big peak on around 55hz, but now with the sub not only I have bass flat down to 30hz, but also the 35 40 and 45hz are evenly balanced and the 55hz peak is much better, of course you will always have peaks and dips in a normal living room, but a sub can surely help.

I’m glad you’re enjoying your sub !! It ABSOLUTELY makes a difference. I have Klipsch Cornwall iv’s, they go down to I think 34hz. I have two REL S812 subs with them and I can say with confidence it DOES make a difference. You would think a speaker that big makes deep bass….. and it does, but the extra you get especially with TWO is well worth the investment if your room can accommodate them. Especially when tuned properly. I used one for a while. Two is awesomer 😅 CHEERS 🍻

I recommend studying Dr. Earl Geddes's study on multiple subwoofers in a small room. It turns out that 2-3 subs spread across the room dimensions negate largely the negative effects of typical hard walled listening rooms. Standing waves and group delay problems are reduced to minimum. For best effect some of the subs must sometimes be delayed and/or switched to reverse phase...

I recently upgraded to a second subwoofer. Fantastic!!! But I use it with a Lyngdorf Amp which has a fantastic bass management including roomcorrection (RoomPerfect). This makes a huge difference, because it can handle room problems very, very well. It also allows to decide on the crossover frequency including a highpass! This provides headroom for the main speakers.

@StCreed The TDAI-2170 supports to subs (either in mono or in stereo) and as far as I know it is the same for the TDAI-3400. On the subwoofers, I choose a volume with a little headroom (a little too loud in bypass mode). Then I do RoomPerfect and maybe tune the sub volume in the TDAI. I would not use the volume knob on the sub after calibration.

My sub use has been driven by the sort of music I listen to: Some orchestral and organ music just isn't going to sound "full" without a sub or two. And since I'm a life member of the bad back club, I use the SVS Micro 3000. No, it's not monstrously big, but it goes down to 23hz (or so), which handles most of my needs. I am looking forward to running dual subs in a few years, but that's going to take some serious saving.

Sometimes having a sub can come handy. Like in our living room I would've ran into trouble if L/R would do the subbass. I would have nasty phase cancellations where we sit. But by putting the subwoofer to another position and tweaking it a little with the phase switch a not so perfect room became very enjoyable to listen to music. :)

I tried the cheapest REL subwoofer for my small office space (8x12) but because I have the Buchardt S400 MK2's, it was like the sub was not there at all. Don't worry friend, i'm a little late to the party joining up with a subwoofer myself. I think i may have figured out the last little bit of that 1% missing from the setup of how to get a seamless transition on the sound stage presentation with bass management from the subwoofer without adding extra color to the sound by way of floor boundary reinforcement by putting the subwoofer on a stand like a bookshelf speaker. The mud & sloppy nature of the bass presentation went away to produce perfect leading edges to the notes. This makes sense if you use isolation pads to clear up resonance issues with speakers or move speakers away from walls to remove the boomy bass & clear up the mid-band frequencies for floor standing speakers so on etc... The end point is that i'm getting a 3-D holographic sound stage & image with seamless transitioning where the speakers are removed with for the music to just float in midair for complete musicality to be there. After experiencing too many bad issues with bass, i'm a believer now :)

I run a pair of ML 13A with 2 BF210. I downloaded the custom crossover filter from ML and installed it on the Sub specifically for the model 13A. They blend perfectly together and sound amazing. Plus Anthem Room Correction makes it much easier for rooms that have issues with bass. No need Subwoofer Craw, just place them behind the main speakers in the corners. ARC will get the right level. By the way, I have used Rel T7/i, T9/i, T7/x, Carbon Limited with high level connection, but I could not get the bass to sound right in my room.

I know this is old but I may be able to help with the high level connector not working properly. Do you have a digital crossover set on your amplifier? If so, your sub won't be receiving the low frequencies it needs since it's only getting what you're sending the speakers. I had to turn off my sub option in my Anthem receiver so the Rel gets full range. It seems counterintuitive to turn off your sub in your receiver but think of the Rel acting as a speaker since that's the signal you're sending it with the high level connector.

Physics rules. Speakers increase in distortion when the cone moves too much. The voice coil leaves the magnetic gap, and therefore the amp loses control of the cone. The cone flexes and is not pistonic in motion. There is also a doppler effect in the midrange as the excursion increases. Adding a subwoofer or two allows the woofers of the mains to keep out of these distortion inducing conditions by limiting the excursion of their cones. Of course, you CAN introduce more distortion with poor integration or reinforcement of room modes.

last year i build 2 rythmic servo subs 12 inch. These are as flat as possible from 15Hz - 100Hz and super fast. But still, you need to correct your room amplification with PEQ (like minidsp). My room had a peak of 15 db at 33Hz in between the 30 & 40 Hz. This screws up your bass sound and sounds fatiguing. As soon you got the bass output flat on your listening position you can turn the bass up without room boom. Bottom line : subs need room correction. At these low frequencies your room will resonate the crap out of a dominating frequency.

Try listening to John Williamson - True Blue, its mainly guitar and vocal with the Sub on, than for giggles turn the sub off.... amazing how much the sub adds to make the vocals come alive and more natural.. plus its am amazing track... 😉🤘

When you get a second make a comparison of one sub just playing Left, and one sub just playing Right, vs both subs playing L+R. Since there is little spacial info in bass signals, the advantages of 2 subs playing same the (L+R) mono signal may improve the smoothness of response.

How do you hook it up as mono if using the high level connection?

Deep Bass thudding & felt through the floor possibly gives you the feeling of watching live bands in a club with it thudding the floor but there is no clarity in bass its more of a sensation when you use them. I prefer not to but when I had a surround sound for the TV it was great for rumbling tanks or explosions.

It is difficult to connect a subwoofer smoothly to a system. Condition : must have continuous phase adjustment, then: 1. Play a cd with lots of low frequencies. 2. Connect the main speakers with inverted phase. 3. Turn the phase adjustment knob to listen to the bass, until the bass sounds least loud! Cause the main speaker is inverted therefore they cancel each other. 4. Reconnect the main speaker. This time NOT inverted. Try it! You will be surprised!

I tried the same sub with electrostatic. People in forums all said, that REL works great with electrostatics, but I never godt it to work. Like you, I did it with both type of connection, following REL's recommendations. I have a sub output at the preamp. But I never got an extension that sounded natural. Maybe I missed something in the setup or maybe electrostatics are too fast.

Looking at a pair of rel s510 or rythmik f12 se servos. I could also kick the tires on the gr research open baffle subs. Thoughts on any of these pairing with Maggie 1.7is ?

I have dual Rythmik F12's with the Buchardt S400 MKII speakers, they are amazing subs. You can buy two for the price of one S510. Not saying the Rel isn't a phenomenal sub, I doubt very much that its better than two F12's. Can't relate to the Maggie's however.

it ll be perhaps interested to buy/test 2 sealed same size (* not ) 3x0 watt (* not) , half price of 510) like : Rythmik F12 , Rel T9x , SVS SB-3000 : HSU ULS-15 MK2 . ..REL 1205 mkII !! *T9 is the only smaller sub ( 2/3 of S510) F12 is 370 watt compare L12 300 watt *REL 1205 mkII has same size 12 inch and power 500watt than S 510 *ULS 15 is bigger ( x1,35) than S510 *svs 3000 is 800 watt !! All here sub ll go under 20Hz except REL 9x , REL 1205 mkII . what missing is data ( SPL value at 20 hz ! )

You said adding this sub was one of the two best additions to your system, what was the other? The PSM156?
@HiFiHuff
@HiFiHuff Жыл бұрын
Yes indeed. The PSM 156 did wonders for my system. It’s the one thing I can not do without but that doesn’t mean it would be the same for all. It cured my electrical issues full stop. No other conditioner did that, even at 3X the cost. Love the 156 and their power cables.
