Since I have made this video I have shortened the tool further by about half inch so there is even less overhang.

Thanks for answering Steve. I've never had one but going to try and make one from your video. I do see where it would come in handy for a lot of different projects. Keep up the videos , they do help a lot.

Oy, you never cease to amaze me with what you are able to accomplish on these little machines and after watching almost all of your videos it is very encouraging to see you use past projects to help build a new one. I am referring to the tool post drill and indexing wheel you made earlier. Turns out they are a very handy bit of kit.

Thanks Steve, Another great instructional video. I didn't know about the soft arbors, will have to look for them. I hope you are enjoying 2018. I have also gotten a laugh from the chicken sounds during your videos and your camera shots of them. Thanks again

An informative video as always. I enjoy seeing the odd chuck walking around. We're planning on getting some rescue hens. Don't think the MD will let them near my shed!

G'day Steve, another good video on how to use the lathe as a horizontal mill. Ever thought of making a small mill.Cheers Peter
@SteveJordan7 жыл бұрын
Hi Peter I would like to have a mill but do not have any room for one. I wouldn't be able to make one either as I have very limited workshop tools only having the two small lathes, a bench drill and extremely limited working space, plus I cannot spend much time on things now due to health problems. Thanks for watching...Regards Steve

Hey Steve, When that rooster crowed half way through I burst out laughing, it was like the start of a Monty python skit😂. When I milled the bottom of my Dixon tool holders on my ml7 I found that if I left the half nuts engaged I could use the leadscrew hand wheel to advance the carriage an equal amount for each cut, say 20 thou then lock the carriage. I’m waiting for some 70mm cast iron hand wheels to arrive from China to use on my drawbars, I’m fortunate that I have space on the left of my machine to use them from that side, needing only a couple of them for multiple tooling. Good project thanks for sharing. Cheers Raymond
@SteveJordan7 жыл бұрын
Hi Raymond. Thanks... I keep forgetting about the hand wheel I have on mine. I haven't used it yet. I will try it out. That was Rooster Murgy crowing. I thought I better include it just in case anyone was falling asleep! Regards Steve

Congratulations Steve, After haven watched many fly cutter videos yours is the first one whitch that seems to be ridgid enough for a small lathe. Yr version use a HSS(I think) cutter with a rather pointy tip and rather large relief angle. Seen others with wide tip. Also seen tools with inserts ,both triangular an rectangular, set in various ways. Have you any recommendations for an amateaur for steel(mild to medium hard) and aluminium. Regards/Ingvar

just found your ark vids.. very cool!
@anthonycash46097 жыл бұрын
Hi Steve. Very good video, I've never had a fly cutter so if I may ask why do you off set the HSS tool to one side instead of in the center of the billet, I do understand the angle on the billet, but not the off set. And what degree is the angle cut at on the billet. Thanks for the good video.
@SteveJordan7 жыл бұрын
Hi Anthony. Thanks. The tool is offset to one side of the billet to allow the actual cutting edge side to be on the center line. I just guessed the angle I will check it later but I think it is around 12-15 degrees. Regards Steve

Hello Steve great project i hope you dpnt mind if I use your idea to make one for my South bend 9A. And were did you get the soft mt2 arbor for my lathe is mt3 at the head stock I have to see if I can get one or two
@SteveJordan7 жыл бұрын
Hi Raymond, I bought mine from this seller, which is the best price for the MT2 tapers. You may be able to use a MT3 to MT2 step down sleeve, but it would have to be modified at the back end so a draw bar thread would go through to the MT2 one, although I don't know if this is possible, without checking. www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2-MORSE-TAPER-SOFT-BLANK-END-ARBOR-SUIT-MYFORD-LATHE-2-MT/332235315986?hash=item4d5ac49b12:g:qGMAAOSw2N1Z1SCg I see MT3 ones on Ebay available from India which would possibly be the best option for you:- www.ebay.co.uk/itm/New-Soft-MT3-Blank-End-Arbor-M12-Drawbar-Thread-28-mm-Diameter-X-30mm/332363561478?epid=2265091852&hash=item4d62697a06:g:ICYAAOSwn7JYEO7l I do put the videos on so that people can make the items for their own lathes. Thanks for watching Regards Steve

Very good video. What angle did you use for the fly cutter? I have a commecrial fly cutter for my Taig (Peatol) lathe and it is 45 deg. Yours looks less than that. But maybe it's the camera.
@dans55955 жыл бұрын
Do you think this could be made, and used on the mini lathe? Maybe the belt drive conversion would make it possible?
@SteveJordan5 жыл бұрын
Hi Dan thanks as soon as I get time I will have s go and make one for the mini lathe. It will be interesting to see how it performs. I hope to do it quite soon as it is a good idea..... thanks Regards Steve
@woodster25944 жыл бұрын
Hi Steve, I know i'm abit late to the party lol, but could you have not just machined the arbor itself to take the tool, by the way I always enjoy your videos, Thanks Mark.
@pauls57454 жыл бұрын
doing it on the lathe might be a bit tricky, since the taper will present a challenge to mount it rigidly on the cross slide. if had large enough opening on an angle plate to pass the taper through you can grip the head, but then it'd probably be best to do it on a mill. I think Steve chose this way to demonstrate for those without a mill how to advance your milling capability solely with and for a lathe. Interesting project tho, to make an angle plate with just such an area of clearance for odd, longer parts

Guys what steel would one use for the fly cutter head? Hardened, EN3, EN1 or just any old mild steel?
@SteveJordan Жыл бұрын
I just use bright mild steel and then blacken it by heating and dipping in oil to give a rust protective finish. Regards Steve
