The Shinji hate definitely did come from people's insecurity. Because you had a character who felt helpless and was trying to figure things out but was in a situation where he wasn't allowed to. That creates real fear within people. It's why I always liked Shinji.
@nethilym2 жыл бұрын
I feel like that's the case for most things, even if the people complaining about it aren't aware of it. After all, self reflection is an easy enough concept to understand, but very few can truly use it effectively.
@Manganization2 жыл бұрын
It's almost saddening that when someone criticises a depressed character in a show, their criticism is often discounted to "people's insecurity". Some people genuinely find characters like Shinji annoying due to societal reasons, or because people genuinely find characters such as Shinji aggravating. And it's often because they're not fun to watch for general audiences. If you're going to follow a main character whose antics are often to be told off and be sulking, crying or screaming all the time, then most people's patience will wear thin. I personally like Shinji, but I also found him very sufferable at times. On the other hand, I DESPISE Subaru from Re:Zero. Hating a character doesn't mean you're projecting, it just means that you hate the character. On the other hand, people who think Shinji isn't a man are definitely conveying their own insecurities, but there is a cultural aspect to this.

It's honestly insane how much these producers were against this sort of writing and depressive material considering it saved their entire company and maybe even the entire anime industry. The writing, depressive material and the lack of explanations made you question everything and interpret it based on your own feelings and that's exactly why the anime was so f*cking good and still is.

@Lovesick.Sagebrush As someone who suffers from depression and anxiety, that's not the case for everyone with mental illness. I've had periods with huge bursts of creativity, but that gets counter balanced with extended periods of creative burnout. I'm watching this when it has ~42k views and all I can say is this was phenomenal. Like most people, I know of Anno through Eva and while I knew of Kare Kano I had no idea he went on to make live-action films (other than Shin Godzilla). You did an amazing job on this and you should be incredibly proud. You've taken a director that has been part of my life since my early teens and explored his works through the ages and given proper time and respect for all of his works. I am just floored.

Props on all the animations you worked on for this video they were amazing, especially the ending bit, I think they really captured Anno's essence from the beginning of his career to now, and probably that overworked exhausted state too. I also love all the extra B roll you scavenged for this, like the daily life footage of 90's to early 2000's Japan, behind the scenes interviews, cells, early animations, and articles! Congratulations. Now get back to work, you have more essays to make 😈

the obsession with the concept of "masculinity" (see the popularity of characters in pop culture like Andrew T and the sudden rise in "masculinity" podcasts) in the west is what makes Shinji so important. He portrays the vulnerable side that everybody has to some degree, even if we are too pridefull to accept that. Some people hate Shinji because they hate that part of themself, they might feel exposed. Also, I suffer from mental illness (I'm medicated; I'm doing fine so far), and I feel that all of Shinji's trauma is easier to understand from that perspective than from someone who is considered "well-adjusted". My brother who does not suffer from mental illness doesn't hate Shinji, but he doesn't understand him as I do.
@Stevem2 жыл бұрын
Yeah Shiniji especially in Japan resonated with a lot of young Japanese kids who felt lost and depression and trauma are totally all over that character, even before the piloting he has some serious baggage with his family

The rise in hyper-masculine culture is a reaction to the increasingly heavy suppression of masculinity in the Western mainstream for the last century, which is being carried out by perverted ideologues, and this is a critically important factor which is dishonest or ignorant to overlook. It isn't about kicking men for having inherent weaknesses, it's about kicking down at the culture of willful weakness.

Really loved this video. It was engaging and entertaining from start to finish which is impressive considering the length. I did wish you'd have talked more about Anno's influences. There were only a few seconds spent on Yamato, and Ideon was mentioned in name, but is very important to Eva and Anno. Still, this is one of the most important videos coming from anime content creators.
@Stevem2 жыл бұрын
It really depends on how many quotes Anno has on those things he usually doesn't go into influence talk specifically unless talking to those people, there are two yamato quotes in this video, the only ideon quote I recall seeing is one where he recommends the movie when talking to tomino he's seemed more on chars counterattack talk and v

Having actual mental issues is also taboo in the west, its just pretending to have those issues that's trendy in some circles, but ask anyone with actual clinical depression or schizophrenia how supportive their community has been and they'll tell you they are on their own.
@Stevem2 жыл бұрын
That's two different levels, generally people are more open about mental health then they were in the past if there's actual enough government support is another factor of course

You may be allowed to say "I have depression" or "I have anxiety", but you're expected to keep any of all signs of it hidden. I've been given advice to "have a nice cup of tea and walk around the block once a day" from family - during bipolar depressive phases that were so severe I was intermittently *catatonic*. While I was living with them. In the US, taking absence for mental illness is usually seen as completely invalid by management, as if they aren't real illnesses. Anyone publicly referring to having substance dependence disorders are labelled an alcoholic/junkie, their opinions doubtful, and their lives worth less than others. Any other lack of impulse control (gambling addiction etc.) is simply seen as poor self-control. Having any psychotic symptoms - hallucinations, paranoia, etc. - gets you labelled as crazy and dangerous to others. I don't want to expand on the hate crimes related to this one. "Narcissist", "psychopath" and "sociopath" are used as insults by nearly everyone and are synonymous with evil. Women with borderline or, to a lesser degree, bipolar disorder are stereotyped as hysterical and dangerous to others. That's all before we touch on religions persecuting us. Or blaming it for school shootings. And without including developmental differences like ADHD and autism. It's fair to say that it's less taboo to have some mental illnesses here, for sure - in recent history. For people of Anno's generation, my parents, it was exactly as taboo for them as it was for him. It's the younger generations around the globe that are more open to talking about mental illness, and we're still a generation or two away before it's really no longer taboo to discuss.

Theres a social effect where the group is motivated only as strongly as the least motivated member. So groups inherently feel held back. Like you go to didney wurld, then you cant do anything but others want to enjoy themself and not waste their vacation. Its like that but to a much smaller extent. And those around them shouldn't be forced into an obligation that makes themself worse off either.

This is great, you already know. Sad that FLCL was glossed over so briefly (I’m still at Kari Kano while writing this) It’s not anno’s project, but it’s a parody of eva and many other things (you already know) and I would love a dossier like this one for FLCL. I have watched it more than anything else, over 50 times since I first saw it 20 years ago, and still find it fascinating, though that’s probably because it was so formative for me, but also because it’s so dense. No one talks about the original tv airing in Japan, or the VHS release. I wonder if there were other cuts.

There so much to cover I never felt I had a firm grasp on the complete cultural sensation, now I feel a lot more caught up. Thanks! The way people regard EVA is how I feel about FLCL. I know enough about the production behind the scenes to know that there is so much there I still don’t know. From this video, I learned that prog and/or whatever adult swim was not just a total cringy disgrace I thought it was, but that anno was about to own FLCL, was stabbed in the back and the property was sold to the highest bidder, making it a disgrace on the corporate and production level too. Wow! FLCL was already perfect end to end, when a part 2 was announced all my red flags went up. Before then I said FLCL was untouchable and a rare case of something that was perfect and never messed up by anyone. Ah well…

@@Stevem I am quite intrigued by the idea of what ‘success’ truly means. I look at the video on Anno and the one you had done a while before on Satoshi, and I realize just how many others have been pushed to the way-side, have been forgotten, have been-chewed-up, used, and spat-out by the ‘industry’, interchangeable quite unfortunately with any other industry, and are continued to be. And we ourselves deal in the same lack of kindness and sympathy, often times, upon others, and especially it seems upon ourselves. And I wonder about those people, the people who came-up with Tezuka, for instance, but he completely swallowed up, with the rising industry of the Manga and its publishers, a world he had helped to build, and define its conventions and laws of, as much as it had used him as well. There was an instance where both Anno and Satoshi talk about feeling the ungratifying nature of ‘success’, and Anno specifically said that he wished for the attention of one ‘woman’, instead of millions from a faceless crowd, just as cold as an uncaring or hateful one, to any discerning eye, I’d imagine. Like that line of, and I am paraphrasing here from a book I had read a while back, how the crowd’s cheers and applause were just as scarring and hurtful as one of denouncement and shaming, if that is all that you can imagine ever having received from anyone or could remember having ever received from anyone, then, you are an object of torture at either swing of the pendulum's. It is a world that we have built and a world that we have continued to build upon, this system or believed system(s) of ‘success’ and ‘failure’, and how studios are, and the status of their employees, like a regular animator's, or even a mangaka’s assistant, most of whom I realize rarely rise above that status, or at least with any stability or longevity, and die often, maybe, with no more a financial guarantee than a part-time menial laborer, not to demean on my part any aspect of their works, including the laborer’s, but that fact of how simply undervalued, unrecognized, and unwarranted the amount of scorn and ignorance it all faces, under the judgement of both the public’s eye, and the (system(s) of the) world that we live in, that we have built and are continually upon ‘rebuilding’. Which, in my mind, makes it that we are all the first man, first woman, or whatever beyond or in-between, we are all the first failure. And yeah, I am very sorry about your hand. I would say I hope it gets better but, some injuries do not, and it is the imposing neccessity of needing to live with it that I hope you get an easy enough time with.

@@nigelblack2138 For Anno he is of a more successful position than Kon, he's pretty free to do whatever he sees fit has his own studio etc, where Kon was lucky to have Maruyama's backing, but he was looking to compromise to go forward as just a director.
