Steve Maskery builds the Ultimate Universal Tablesaw No-Dado Box Joint Jig!
Yes, it's a bit of a mouthful. But it's actually quite good. One jig, one blade, any size finger-joint. Did we mention it doesn't need a dado head? Best design using just a Flat Top Grind Rip blade.
Plans now available at www.stevemaske...

Steve, great presentation style. Little details that show you are a natural teacher (you want this clean side, not this chipped out side). Humor (11.8mm is somewhere between 11-12mm...almost fell out of my US based chair). I bought your plans and should have it done this evening! Thanks much. After 20 box joint vids, this is the one.

Steve, your sense of humor, your ability to tell others to "get over yourself", your infectious smile, and your awesome finger joint jig, caused me to subscribe! That is a neat little jig you made. I'm from Mississippi, but, my Fisher roots come from Nottingham. So like you said, I have a Ridgid Table saw and a Freud Dado stack. If something comes up and you don't hear from me, just know I'm fighting primary liver cancer and am terminal. So stiff upper lip old man and I will make comments. Daniel Fisher.

Just a few days ago, I thought to myself, "There has to be a way to make a box joint jig that would cut more than one size of joint. One of these days, I'll sit down and think about how to make one." I just stumbled across this video, and found you've done the thinking for me. Thank you for saving me a few brain cells : )

I tried two other "simple box joint jigs" I found on KZbin, both of which seemed simple but ended up being complicated or hard to build, or at least hard to build right. That is, hard for me to build right. After giving up on the second one I went browsing KZbin videos again and came across this one. At first jt seemed complicated, especially because you were so careful and precise. But once I had watched the whole thing through I thought, "That's it?" Then I watched it again and thought, "Wow, it's really that simple." I drew it up and built it within a day, and I'll be damned if it didn't work right the very first time I used it. Of course I still need some practice but I already know it's going to work and work well. And yet it's so simple. Genius. Thanks for sharing!

You have changed my view of the universe. Until I saw this video I believed that in the world of box-joint jigs, "Simple" meant one size only, no variation, and "Versatile" or "Adjustable" meant incredibly complex to build and to use. I'm sorry that I can't go build one of these right now, but soon, very soon! Also, how have you been hiding your excellent channel? I thought I knew all the good woodworking channels on YT, and had grown tired of most of them, but here's a wealth of great content. Let the binge-watching begin. Thanks. It's great!

I just built one of these. There are a lot of "box joint jigs" on KZbin. Some very basic, and some very complicated with gears and threaded rod. I liked this design as it was a simple sled, with interchangeable inserts for different box joints. Using the single blade (as I rarely use box joints over 1/2") works well, and with the simple screws was surprised how easy it was to dial in the perfect fit, and complexly repeatable. If i want to do a new size for some reason, very easy to grab a scrap of 3/4 ply and make up a new insert to suite. Well worth the effort.

Hi Steve. About five years ago I built a box joint jig for my table saw and dado set. I struggled with the setup every time I used it. I then built a jig for my router table and I'm not pleased with the quality of the joints it makes. I've watched a dozen, or so, videos on building box joint jigs, and yours is the one I'm building now. It is the most simple, straight forward design I've found.

I just made this jig - a really well explained job. As usual, I didn't listen (ask my wife) and the dual rails I made were both 0.4mm too skinny, result - misery. It didn't help that my 6 month old MDF had been in a wet shed, nor that my initial attempt at checking this came out perfectly and lulled me into a false sense of perfection, nor that I used a face board to avoid the split- out as described, but failed to use double sided tape and v thin scrap, as I had neither, and the plate of ply I used slid on the face of the jig... you get the idea. Perfection is easier if everything is dry, neat, to hand, and you have all the ingredients. I expect years of practice helps. Every error leads to a better day, just don't do what I did - do what he did! I'll remake the jig after a visit to B&Q on Wednesday.

Besides showing us an innovative jig, the video treats us to one of the best metrology jokes ever, "If you work in inches, 11.8 mm is somewhere between 11 and 12 mm." Hey, I have to give you my greatest congratulations. I've been woodworking for close to 30 years and I've done lot's of Box-joints with numious jigs, but "YOURS" beats em all by a landslide. I'm gonna try to build it like yours. The only problem I have, is I dont have a router anymore. Due to my health I'm living on disability. When it all happened, we needed money so much, we had to sell everything I had (and it was a lot). I'm slowly restarting to purchase tools for my small shop room. So, I might have a little trouble making the little triangle cut for the guard. I might have to come up with a diffferent type of guard! But anyways, Congratz. You are a serious jig genious. Well it has been a month, but I created my version of your jig. I had to make a few alterations because I don't have a router table, a v router bit or a drill press. And I understand metric but all my measuring devises are in inches and fractions. I'm on the other side of the pond. I did not get the same results with my box jig that you did. But for my first one, it is surprisingly good. My box joints are not as tight and have some gaps. But with a little bit of a tweak and and new blade for my table saw, I am sure in no time, It will improve. I want to thank you again.

The best thing about this is how easy it is to micro-adjust not only the width of the slot but also the start point for the first slot, meaning you can get the top edges of the 2 work pieces perfectly flush, as well as being able to tune the snugness of the fit to your own personal preference. This is a great idea. I looked at several other designs before finding this one, and immediately decided this was the one that I wanted to build. I like the quick setup, repeatability, and compact size. Between this and William Ng's precise measurement techniques in his "Make an Accurate Box Joint Jig" video, I'm hoping to be able to consistently cut box joints to the correct thousandth of an inch with very little setup time.

@@TheFalconJetDriver My previous reply might have been blocked because I included a link to Instagram. To repeat, I built the "dining table" version of this jig with some good hardwood and a couple of modifications (not affecting the critical functionality), and I'm a huge fan. I used calipers during setup and I thought it was helpful. I might build two sets of inserts so I can have one for hardwood and one for softwood, since softer wood tends to swell more when the glue is applied. It might also be possible to measure how much of a screw rotation would be needed to make that adjustment on the fly.

I'm curious as to why you nibble the slot to get the fit for the right side of the jig instead of using your spacer of the correct size and insert it between the adjusting screw and the jig frame the right. IMO, it would provide the right spacing more quickly and without nibbling the scrap piece of wood.

" if you work in inches, 11.8 mm is between 11 and 12 mm". Interesting observation. I love your videos, and your presentation is great. I just got a chuckle when you said that. My guess is that the imperial system of measurement is no more your cup of tea than mine. Unfortunately 330 million or so of my countryman don't agree.
