Fun fact, if you succesfully managed to view the pen in 3D, you can do the same with two "identical" images next to each other and spot the mistakes in one of the pictures. If you know the game - find five differences. The differences are the spots where you can see a "small" blinking from the merged picture.

Fun fact... birds can't move their eyes in their head, so they use their neck muscles to stabilize their vision. That's why you see birds bobbing their head when they walk, it's because they keep their head still to maintain a steady image, then snap forward quickly onto the next position. It's similar to Steve's analogy about looking at trees when riding the train or in a car.

I’ve done something weird with my eyes since I was a kid and now do it a lot as an adult. When I was little I loved spot the difference pictures and could do them in record time , by crossing my eyes and overlapping the two images, any difference on the overlapping image I see seems to move or look lighter or darker ( just different) . Also the hidden image pictures can be seen instantly. I use this “ ability “ in so many different ways and has helped immensely. I’d love to hear if anyone else does this as I’ve never talked about it or heard of anyone else doing it. Thanks Steve.

Okay this just explained something I've been wondering about for so long I just archived it...when I was a kid I noticed that looking up at a drop ceiling and spinning around resulted in a "chopping" image. Like jump jump jump instead of a smooth rotation. Based on this video, it seems like the nice pretty squares tricked my brain into thinking that the pattern was supposed to be staying still, and the eye roll was compensating until it couldn't keep up, then snapping back and reevaluating the image. Your eyes suddenly rotated back every time they saw the square? Wow
@polycrystallinecandy Жыл бұрын
@@NorthLoftier no, they rotate back once they hit their range of motion. The aim is to project a stable image on the retina, which can only happen while the eyes are rotating. Snapping back causes momentary destabilization of the image, but it becomes stable again once the eyes start rotating again from the start.
@TurtleMoonTube Жыл бұрын
eyes maybe rotating (back and forth) and brain trying to hold image still so you can "see" the ceiling by making it still, instead of just seeing the spin. Like when you try to see a car passing by you pan with head. So, rotating eyes is like panning but with rotation.

This is fascinating! I never knew about the rotation thing but it’s so beautifully explained. I don’t know if he mentions it in one of his other videos, but the eyes also blank out - or rather the brain doesn’t process the data - when our eyes flicker from one point to another, so we don’t see a wildly shifting image at those points. It does it so well that we are not even aware that we are missing these fractional moments of vision. That’s why jet fighter pilots are trained to move their heads rather than their eyes to look at something, so there is no danger of missing a rapidly approaching threat. It’s also why drivers at a junction are advised to move their heads to look for oncoming traffic, rather than their eyes, because if you look around by moving your eyes only, it’s possible for the eye to blank out for a split second and thus literally not see an approaching vehicle, especially something relatively fast and small like a bicycle or motorbike.

@thunderousavenger2382 Жыл бұрын
That makes no sense to me. How exactly would moving your head prevent your eyes from focusing? Since for me at least you still focus on an object when moving your head and then focus on the next object. So please do explain how exactly that would work. The driver example i mean. Also head movement is slower than eye movement as far as i know, or am i just missing something here?
@MarkHarmer Жыл бұрын
@@thunderousavenger2382 that’s what I was saying - your eyes don’t “blank out “ if you move your head, whereas if you move your eyes it’s a rapid movement and your brain blanks out the image while your eyes move. Because of this you will literally “not see” something approaching if you move your eyes to look, whereas if you move your head you will not have these blanks of non-vision.

Although I like the idea, (depending on your age) It’s very unlikely. The visual cortex has a critical period and once you escape a certain age range your eyes and the neural structures that process information from the retina are sort of cemented. This is the same reason why eye issues are addressed in childhood before the issue is permanent in adulthood. Not trying to burst any bubbles here...
@OkieWanKedokie4 жыл бұрын
@@texanphenom I don't know, I've read about experiments where a person wore special glasses that turned their vision upside down, and their brain compensated for it after about a week. It may be possible that something similar could happen with the sort of glasses Steven described.

When I was younger, I was confused about why the pattern changed until I heard, "Oh yeah, my eye rotates over time" by someone else. I did eventually learn it was just a thing our body does to focus. What I didn't know, is that I could learn to do it myself. Fun skills that will be added to my "to learn" list. It'll go well with my wiggling ears.
