Note that he brings up Korolev, the massively talented Soviet rocket scientist who was released from the gulag so the Soviets could build their rockets, develop ICBMs and run the manned space programme. The thing is, he was Ukrainian. So the jewel in the crown of Soviet achievements was the work of a Ukrainian.
