Steven Spielberg Gives A Tour of Universal Studios - Behind The Scenes of Movie Magic

Join renowned filmmaker Steven Spielberg as he takes you on a guided tour of the legendary Universal Studios (Hollywood) lot in Universal City, Los Angeles, California (91608).
Steven Spielberg is gonna need a boat. Not a bigger boat. Same-sized boat, preferably.
Actually, the closer they can replicate the Orca fishing vessel from Jaws, the better.
We are sitting in a golf cart beside the lagoon at Universal Studios in Hollywood (Universal City), where - ever since 1976, the year after Jaws debuted - a mechanical great white has breached these depths to menace tourists on the famed tram (Studio) tour. (It works better than the prop shark on the movie ever did.)
This faux harbor, located just up the hill from Spielberg’s hacienda-style Amblin Entertainment offices, was once the mooring spot of the actual Orca fishing boat used in the movie.
Until, one day, it wasn’t.
“I used to come out for a couple of years after I made the movie to get over my PTSD,” Spielberg says, gesturing across the water. “I would work through my own trauma because it was traumatic. I would just sit in that boat alone for hours, just working through, and I would shake. My hands would shake.”
A psychiatrist might call this “exposure therapy” - confronting the thing that scares you. In Spielberg’s case: an out-of-control, over-budget, possibly career-ending nightmare production that nearly ruined him as a 27-year-old director just as he was getting started.
The troubles on that movie drove him, fueled him, made him tougher as he went on to make Raiders of the Lost Ark, E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial, Jurassic Park, Schindler’s List, Saving Private Ryan, Lincoln, and countless others, including the new family fable The BFG. Forcing himself to sit on the Jaws boat in the middle of a fake lake on a dusty hillside in Los Angeles was how Spielberg reminded himself that whatever went wrong, he could handle it. He could fix it. He could make things work.
“Then I was fine,” he says. Time passed. “I hadn’t seen the boat in five years and decided to just come back and revisit it. And it was gone.” He shakes his head and throws up his hands. “They said there was dry rot, there were termites. Of course, there were termites and dry rot! It was an old boat!”
All that remains of the Orca now are the wheel, one propeller, and the flag. “I’m going to actually ask them to rebuild it and put it back here,” Spielberg says. “Because the tourists would love to see the Orca here.” So would he. The aches and pains of the Jaws shoot are exactly what Spielberg wants to face again, kind of like Robert Shaw’s Quint and Richard Dreyfuss’ Hooper showing off their healed-over scars.
Spielberg has made movies at studios all over Hollywood, but Universal has always been his home base. Not only is it the location of Amblin, it’s also where a baby-faced, teenage Steve Spielberg sneaked through the gates over the course of one long summer in the early 1960s, hoping to learn everything he could about moviemaking.
The BFG is Spielberg’s first movie released under the Walt Disney Studios banner, but its story of a little orphan girl and her adventures with a big friendly giant (played by Bridge of Spies Oscar-winner Mark Rylance) seemed like a good opportunity to revisit Spielberg’s own original stomping grounds.
While we’re gazing across the water, a tram rolls by and the 69-year-old transforms from legendary director…to theme-park attraction.
Spielberg grins and waves as the tourists try to get over their surprise in time to snap a few pictures."

The Universal Studios Hollywood Studio Tour tram route hasn't really changed in the last thirty years. Minor changes depending on filming on the lot as well as the various tram specific attractions. For the most part, you see a lot of the studio on the tram. If you're going to visit Universal, we highly recommend the VIP Experience. Yes, it's a bit pricey but in our opinion completely worth it. You ride in a trolly with a 15 person maximum and stop at various locations on the backlot. You can touch and feel the facades and then you get VIP (Front of The Line) access to (most) rides, shows, and attractions in the theme park. A Studio Guide stays with you for most of the day and walks you around to the various attractions. They're the most knowledgeable about Universal Studios, filmmaking, television production and a whole lot more. Some of the Studio Guide are active actors, writers, and producers who have the first-hand experience in Hollywood. Man, that was so cool even for a 67 year old man. I just loved his candid honesty. He is seven years older than me but so relatable. I had no idea of the size of real estate that Universal Studios is. It was fun to google map it and break in between so I could zoom down and find things he was describing. I was a young kid trying to break into the entertainment industry in the mid 80s and got a "Day Job" at Universal Studios. The Amblin Entertainment complex, behind it's own mysterious gates on the Universal back lot, was the highest on my list of places I wanted to see, but it was very off limits to most. One day I got notice late in the day that someone needed an urgent package delivered to Amblin and I was chosen to deliver it!! When I got there in my studio car the gate was open but no one was there.. I did however get ON THE GROUNDS of the Mysterious Forbidden Amblin!! I was like a little child in a fairy tale.. Not that there was a spectacular amount to see from the outside, though I could peer in closer than I ever imagined. It was just such a fabled place where others could not go.. and suddenly I could... I have worked in the entertainment industry for many years now.. What a great time that was..

One of the high points of my life, 1977, a friend of a friend had business at Werner brothers studio's which at the time was a very closed lot to the general public. We got on the studio lot, my friend and his friend that had a reason to be there taking care of the business in just 30min. We spent the rest of the day running around the studio lot, eating at the commissary, saw lots of stars and a fun memory, I played a bit on the rope/tire swing used on the Waltons. I can only dream how it would be to have your own private tour with the great Spielberg.

There use to be an animatronic King Kong now its digital, also there was a mummy section which became something else, I think its now fast and furious. This was really cool! I guess some people reading this won't believe me, but I'll lob it out there anyway, in this comment: I was an "extra" on The Lost World (I was one of the dinosaur hunters including the dude with the walking stick which you see in that one silhouette scene on the cliff) and got a special project as it were - Vince Vaughn was sick the day he was to reach for the giant satellite cell phone (as the RV was going over the cliff) and that is actually my arm and yes… Mr. Spielberg directed my right arm to grab the shi* out of that strap (of that cell phone). I remember him saying "let's spritz up his arm" (to make it look like I was sweating a bit in the humidity and all) and I ended up spritzing up my own arm (!!) with a little spray bottle for Mr. Spielberg (and folks around the world, ultimately, I guess, who watched the film). That was (in essence) a kind of simple little thing that (because it was Steven Spielberg directing me and it was a very large project) was actually a highlight of my life. As a side note, I was also the arms (there I go being typecast again :-) of the late, great Mr. Pete Postlethwaite. It was the scene where he scrambles to open the case containing the elephant gun to shoot a dinosaur. Spielberg directed me to do it over and over again (and I kept getting it right) until I made a mistake and fumbled while trying to open the case and then with THAT take he basically said, "PERFECT, CUT!" - It was an interesting lesson in how he wanted the natural, less perfect take - great lesson indeed.

That's a rare and incredible opportunity - I only met him once but didn't have nearly as much interaction with him. I do security at Universal Studios. And of course I'm also an actor & I do BG work but my passion is acting (I train at Playhouse West - last place where Sanford Meisner taught). I think my coolest on set experience was being directed by Clint Eastwood in the movie "Jersey Boys".

The Spielberg drive by reminds me of one time I was in Vegas and while walking around the Bellagio shops, he was walking in the opposite direction straight towards me and I was so surprised I kind of pointed and said "Steven Spielberg." He smiled at me and kept on walking with his wife. It was such a trip because no one seemed to recognize him but me.

What a priceless and one of a kind tour that was! Way better than a noisy crowded tram. I was fortunate to meet both Steven Speilberg and Jimmy Stewart at the 1990 opening day of Universal Studios Orlando. Ironically, I was a young film student too back then. I luckily knew a few people working at Universal and found out Speilberg had a private residence/office while he was at the theme park. So, I took a chance and waited near there, hoping to just get a photo of him. I got my wish and more when he soon appeared. I told him I was a film student and he graciously took a few minutes to talk to me about my film school and we also discussed technically a few shots from his most recent film, "Always." That day was definitely one of the coolest moments of my life.

You just saved everyone $119 for the cost of a Universal City Studios ticket. This was better than the tour. :) I was wondering whether those rumors were true about Steven Spielberg sneaking onto the lot. That probably can't be done today. Security has increased 100 times more.

If you're going to visit Universal, we highly recommend the VIP Experience. Yes, it's a bit pricey but in our opinion completely worth it. You ride in a trolly with a 15 person maximum and stop at various locations on the backlot. You can touch and feel the facades and then you get VIP (Front of The Line) access to (most) rides, shows, and attractions in the theme park. A Studio Guide stays with you for most of the day and walks you around to the various attractions. They're the most knowledgeable about Universal Studios, filmmaking, television production and a whole lot more. Some of the Studio Guide are active actors, writers, and producers who have the first-hand experience in Hollywood. I agree but I will say a buddy and I sneaked in during the 90s several times. One time by showing a tube of sunscreen to security booth as we drove through (power of suggestion)

I did this tour twice the 2 times i went to Orlando and Once in LA. Those poor sods on the tour bus had no Idea one of the greatest directors of our time just drove by!! ;)
