1977 - at the age of 12 I saw Close Encouters. It was my first film by Steven Spielberg. Since then, this name has accompanied me through a wonderful time in the cinema. Some harsh ratings on classics here. Pretty surprised at Last Crusade especially being so low. Generally it gets regarded as like Raiders, just as fun but better written and more interesting. I also have trouble with a 4/10 for Always. Sure it's flawed and a little tropey, but that's a gorgeous and moving little film to me, as intimate and effectively emotionally true as Spielberg gets. Even Kingdom of the Crystal Skull I would never give less than a 5. There's still just so much fun in it. It just doesn't come close to the rough and tight clever adventure pastiches of the 80s Indy films.

No one does magic dust like SS. Some say he over does it but when it works, no one does cinema like him if escapism is your thing. The Jaws singing scene, most of ET, the early UFO encounters in Third Kind, the first 30 mins of War Worlds, the rolling ball in Raiders, the approaching storm in Poltergeist (we all know he directed it), and the Lincoln letter scene in Ryan. There are better directors perhaps, but no one better when you want magic dust.

Hollywood studios will often release two or more movies with similar plots or themes at around the same time (example: Armageddon/Deep Impact, Saving Private Ryan/The Thin Red Line). I think the reason Empire of the Sun is so overlooked is due to it being released around the same time as The Last Emperor - a similar themed movie that received more love from the critics.

Just saw 1941 for the first time and I think it's really underrated, the extended version is great and I love the sheer scope and audacity of it. Those shots of the tank driving through the paint factory and the house falling off a cliff...I've never seen anything like it.

everytime I see this "ranking" stuff or a commentary about spilberg's work, I know that 1941 would always be used as the "cautionary tale" and yet... I love that movie. I watched it when I was a kid and laughed from the very first scene (we were a bit confused my mother had rented the wrong movie), to stupid jokes as "it's going it''s going it's going" or "give me a break" or "he is to tall to be a jap" and I could go on and on. The fight, them throwing sailers and army men to each side always will crack me up, and the despair of the mother grabbing that jar while the house fall off the cliff... It is a masterpiece, and no one will ever change my mind.

I was working in Media Relations at Columbia Pictures in the 1980s and in 1982-83 we took every prize for our triple fantastic films of Tootsie, Gandhi and Das Boot (pronounced Boat BTW). Many of us were invited to a birthday party for the son of top executive of Universal (who shall be nameless). The son had been working in our department for experience. Later in the evening, I walked into the kitchen where said top Universal executive took me (a mere publicist BTW) and began haranguing me about the fact that Gandhi had taking all the Academy awards and ET got nothing. I'm sure he was taking his frustration out on me since he couldn't yell at the head of Columbia Pictures (Frank Price). It was unnerving and very surreal. And, may I say that I believe Gandhi deserved all the accolades it got and I was proud to work with Richard Attenborough who was a truly great and exceptional man. Oh, and in the early 1960s, Steven Spielberg was my brother's roommate at Long Beach State Univ before Spielberg switched to USC. Back then, he always looked like a film was running in his mind and that he found the life around him to be secondary. I never would have predicted his great and deserved rise to fame.

The only strong objection I had was the placement of “The Color Purple,” which you placed No. 11th. I would’ve swapped it out with “Indiana Jones Last Crusade”just because it represented, as you correctly pointed out, was Spielberg‘s first attempt at pure dramatic story telling. I can remember seeing it with my mother and walking out at the end with both of us in tears. It was such a tremendously great film. It’s also easily ranks as one of the worst examples of the Academy Awards getting it so profoundly wrong, with an amazing 11 Oscar nominations and 11 snubs - bloody outrageous!!

I'm not really a Spielberg fan and I have not seen many of his movies, but here is my ranking of what I have seen: 1: Close Encounters of the Third Kind (10/10) 2: Raiders of the Lost Ark (9/10) 3: Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (8/10) 4: E.T. The Extra Terrestrial (7/10) 5: Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (7/10) 6: Jaws (6/10) 7: Ready Player One (6/10) 8: Catch Me If You Can (6/10) 9: The BFG (5/10) 10: Jurassic Park (5/10)

Jaws should be #1. It has had the greatest effect, saving many lives by scaring the heck out of swimmers and making them stay in shallower waters, thereby preventing deaths by drowning.

I have 6 children, and I rented Schindler's List when most of them were little. I was watching it by myself, enjoying it, until the scene when the young child was executed by being shot in the head. It's the only movie I ever had to stop watching due to my emotions getting the best of me. I wept like a little boy after seeing that, and probably will again if I ever try to rewatch that movie.

I'd put Raiders up top at #1. Even though it's a "genre" piece, Spielberg elevates it to genius with his pure visual imagination, kinetic movement and the expert pace of Lawrence Kasdan's script.

Wow. What a filmography. It’s almost impossible to list, I actually enjoyed all 21 movies I’ve seen. Everyone has their own favorites and I have some all-timers lower than some (like E.T.). Bridge of Spies 10. Jurassic Park: The Lost World 11. Jaws 12. Ready Player One 13. A.I. 14. E.T. 15. Lincoln 16. Empire of the Sun 17. Hook 18. Amistad 19. The Fabelmans 20. The Post 21. @SaturnCanuck Жыл бұрын
For the most part I agree. In ET, you forgot to mention Williams' score totally adds to the overall vision -- it's brilliant. Also, Always is perhaps his most under-rated movies, and while you mentioned this being Audrey Hepburn's final movie role, she plays "An Angel" which makes this even more heart-breaking.

John Williams is the secret weapon behind pretty much every great Spielberg film.
@CanadianChiGuy23 Жыл бұрын
Williams was incredibly worried about his score being edited for time. Spielberg said he would create film AROUND/UPON Williams’ music, which is why the last 10 minutes is practically entirely Williams’ score. You don’t get a more perfect collaboration of cinema-making EVER. The initial screening drew a 9-minute standing ovation from the audience!!!

Regarding the last act of "The Lost World", no, I don't think those people "have a point". The general complaint I have seen from a lot of people seems to be that it's silly that they brought the dinosaurs back to San Diego despite the fact that this is stated in the movie itself as the InGen plan all along. It's typical that the very corporate nephew of John Hammond would decide to bring the dinosaurs to the people rather than take tourists to a remote island where it's a better environment for them. John Hammond realized that the island was the better choice for the dinosaurs which is why he abandoned the San Diego park he'd already started construction on. This is a genius bit of world building and in my opinion adds to the first movie rather than detracting from it. It's still an inferior sequel to the first movie but that first movie is so brilliant that a sequel was never going to match the first.
@filmranker60924 жыл бұрын
I totally get where you're coming from. And if I remember correctly, I think this is all fully explained in the book. But while story and internal logic wise you are right, I think for people who aren't thinking past the surface level it is maybe a tonal and a geographical shift that is a bit hard to adjust to.
