The fact that Spielberg, 29 at the time, after only his second theatrical feature, was disappointed he wasn’t recognized over one of the most internationally renowned filmmakers at the time is hilarious. However with the Directors Guild of America he is a three time winner 1985, 1993 and 1998 and has a whopping 8 additional nominations 1975, 1977, 1981, 1982, 1985, 1987, 1993, 1997, 2005 & 2012.

Consider it this way because he likes to make movies to appeal to the masses, people find it harder to say whether he deserves an award or not because you made a people like, yet that would mean your film doesn't raise questions or cover difficult and perhaps controversial stories. Spielberg is my favorite because he is likes to embrace positivity and that can mean sometimes makes stories with clear bad guys and clear good guys and the academy doesn't like that. They want to embrace movies that are complex. However, I think his stories are complex when you look at how the actors act and characters live in his worlds, in his movies, silence says a lot if not more than words, one person can mean the world a difference, and so on ... But becauae they're interwoven with intense and epic events of the story, that can be lost on people. Either way, award or not, he is one of the great directors of all time and like say Michael Jackson, he crosses barriers with his movies.

Altman didn’t deserve the nomination. His direction wasn’t as impressive as Spielberg’s in Jaws.

Wait! Is that (01:08) the small time loan shark from _Rocky?_ Was he watching _Jaws_ at Spielberg's to research his upcoming role with Sylvester Stallone?

Rest in Peace Joe Spinell. Didn't know he passed away in 1989.

It did win Oscars for Music, Sound and Editing.

Other nominations Jaws should’ve received: Best Director for Spielberg, Best Adapted Screenplay, Roy Scheider for Best Actor and Robert Shaw for Supporting Actor. Easily could’ve gotten 8 Academy Award nominations when adding these 4 along with the 4 nominations it did receive.

Steven having some bros backing him is great. Real friendships.

Poor steve. Little did he know he'd go on to not only be nominated but win countless oscars. I love this, showing his beginnings :D

Jaws should've been nominated for: Best Picture, Director, Actor, Two Supporting Actors, Adapted Screenplay, Score, Sound, Art Direction, Cinematography, and Editing.

I think there is something a little tongue in cheek about this, you can tell by the way he hyped it up at the start and had his friends there in Jaws and black-tie shirts, etc.

He was holding a Kodak Super8 sound camera there for a bit, he put it down around the 2:45 mark. Always on task that Steven! I love this video, so cool to see. What a standout year in film in a standout decade in film!

If you think this was a Robbery, the director who was nominated Stanley Kubrick never won his entire life!
@Jared_Wignall6 жыл бұрын
Juke Box Hero he did win one Academy Award: Best Visual Effects for 2001. He should’ve won Best Director at some point however.

What Steven Spielberg said about Commercial Backlash is spot-on. That is what happened to the Dark Knight in 2008 and that is what I suspect will happen to The Dark Knight Rises if it is not nominated.
@Hritik90002 жыл бұрын
The Dark Knight rises was a bad film and yes the dark knight shpuld have been nominated in both best pic and director category but now this is 9 years later how do you feel?

I love Joe Spinnell. He was such a supporter for his friends, of which he had many. Practically, crying over this. Such a great soul.
