I feel like the biggest thing that changed the Diamonds was Spinel. Like think about it. In the movie, they seem to be doing good things, but they don’t really “get” it. But then in Future, they seem to legitimately be trying to help. Like in the movie, they use the throne room, but then in Future, it’s just an attraction and they don’t really use it. I feel like it was probably because Spinel was the first gem they ever loved that wasn’t a diamond, and it made them look upon lesser gems in a different light. Idk, maybe I’m wrong, but it’s what makes the most sense to me, and I prefer their development here instead of the ones in the movie and change your mind.

I still don't like how Steven still sees Rose as an irredeemable monster, yet he has no trouble going to see the Diamonds for advice and stuff, yes, he tried to shatter White, but that was just part of his anger that was already boiling from episode before.

Marshall Lee he doesn’t see her as an irredeemable monster. Throughout the original series and the first few episodes of future it’s shown he doesn’t really know how to feel about her. He recognises she did a lot of bad things and a lot of good things but he can’t come to his own conclusion because he never met her and everyone in his life saw her in completely different ways so he will never have a clear answer as to who she was. That’s why he gets angry when he has to constantly hear about the awful things she did before becoming Rose. And he does have trouble going to the diamonds. In the movie and future he wants nothing to do with them and actively tries to avoid them. He goes to them in homeworld bound as his last resort. He is at his lowest point where he thinks they are the only ones who can help him even if he doesn’t want anything to do with them

GalacticHypernova One is hardly better than the other, all for the worse. Change your mind was a jump the shark moment in which Steven won the battle via space temper tantrum and stupidity. The Future was a terrible send off, leaving people with the message that it’s okay to run away from everything so long as it’s for the greater good in your opinion. It’s impressive how far the quality dipped after the Pink = Rose reveal. Thank god it’s over. Hopefully the people behind this go onto bigger and better things than Steven Universe: The Fanfiction.

This mini-series was alright, though I agree that it was lacking something in its story. I liked how they dived into the gems aiding Beach City in some way, along with Steven's personal growth. Although, there were some pacing issues and Jasper's final moments felt underwhelming. As for Steven's kaiju form, there should've been more time dedicated to it, but I still thought they did a decent job with it. The design itself was really cool and I kind of liked how his monster's expression was mostly sad and confused. It's a nice change of pace from the usual angry/violent look you often see on characters that turned into some kind of monster. The final episode was a nice sendoff for the series with Steven saying goodbye to all of his friends and family. It was also clever how the last shots tied in to the end credits of "Future," signifying how Steven grew up and moved onto a new chapter in his life.

I partially disagree with your take on "I Am My Monster". I think having a smaller, more intimate scale to this episode was more fitting. I think it makes sense that the other characters' could only reach to him at his most vulnerable. That said, I *heavily* agree that we should've seen Steven's headspace in that fight. This episode reminded me a lot of the final arc to the Mob Psycho 100 manga, which had a similar angle to it-- which really benefitted it in the end. Maybe depicting Steven talking with Pink and Rose, like Mob did with ???%. Heck, I could go as far as describing Mob vs Toichiro as a better version of "Change Your Mind".

Why are people asking for a Steven and Rose conversation? The whole point of change your mind, and for that matter the original series, is that Steven is his own self, and Rose is GOOOOONEEEEE But yeah seeing Steven's corrupted mind would've been cool
@NerdMiGerd
@NerdMiGerd 4 жыл бұрын
@@undergalaxy775 I wouldn't want it to be, like, *actually* Rose or Pink. Just his own mental projection of her. What he'd *think* she would be like given what he knows about her. You could get really artsy with it and have it be some strange, off-putting amalgam of the two-- to the point where she's nearly unrecognizable, to better showcase Steven's mental lapse. Maybe even mix that in with his "buff pink" form, a three-headed monster of all his past facades. Everything about himself he repressed, bubbling to the surface as a horrid mess Akira-style. I think I *really* went off the rails there. Important thing is-- while I was hoping for a little more out of the episode, I am still so proud of what we got. I think it's better they went for something more straightforward, rather than overcomplicate things. We've got a shitton of fan content to cover that.

Even though there were a lot of meh episodes, I still fell in love with the main characters and the awesome music. Steven's monster has multuple design notes of Godzilla (bipedal saurid, glowing charging fins, longer humanoid arms) , and this is thematic, Godzilla is a monster AND a victim, so Steven's Monster reflects these aspects of Steven's mental state. Just my own two cents on Steven's monster design.

The thing about the hug, it was the fact that Steven was keeping his “flaws” in check and never wanted to openly show his problems to other people, the moment he turned into a monster was him basically showing his “true colours” much like during a mental breakdown you just emotionally lash out and the fact that Steven saw how everyone was there for him and told him that it’s ok to be a flawed person was him finally seeing that he didn’t need to hold his true feelings back, it wasn’t the final deal to his mental health problems as there was a time skip where he had therapy which he continues doing, the hug was just the first step for Steven to finally unwind and release the pent up stress, this isn’t like thematic action scene, it’s an emotional one that mostly people with these kind of problems can relate the most to so I understand why it seemed anticlimactic, it’s a big thing for me since I had personal moments like these but if you never had those then it’s hard to appreciate this kind of thing

I understand enjoying the emotional aspect of the show so much that you can forgive story hiccups, but I am not someone who can just dismiss plot problems for the sake of how I feel. And that's why SU fell a lot for me. It was a show that had a good plot and good emotional moments, but then it became a show that just had good emotional moments and a bad story. I'm someone who can't feel for an event of a story if I dislike the way it was written, and that was the case for this show from season 4 onwards. Emotional logic overcame every aspect of the show and made me dislike a lot of what they did. Villains who get away with everything, no consequence for any negative action, conflicts being rushed or happening off-screen, etc. It was a bunch of tropes that I hate in any story. Future just had more of that and I ended up not liking it as a result. The show lost me on the final arc of S5 and nothing they did later on brought me back. This is a shame because I used to really love the show, and that feeling stopped in the recent years. What they did with Jasper on Future was the biggest letdown of all. The only 2 episodes I did enjoy where the first one and Fragments, but they were ruined by the disappointing ending they gave her: shes just on Little Homeworld now, no meaningful ending or anything, she's just there. They used what could have turned out to be a great character as a plot device and a punching bag. That's the one thing I will discuss anyone about, because they totally did her dirty. Shes a character from S1 who was murdered on this very season and they give her the lamest ending ever.

Cartoons, just like any other form of entertainment, are art. If a piece of art manages to leave an impact on you on an emotional level, then it works. If SU didn't leave an impact on you, then it's okay for you to not like it, but you can't separate the emotion from the quality. Emotion is the most universal way of judging art, and if someone likes SU for the emotion it brought him/her, it's not only understandable, it's straight up logical
@FlippySuper
@FlippySuper 4 жыл бұрын
Under Galaxy except emotion can be felt without quality. Why else do you think charity groups make commercials with sad footage? Those ads don’t have to be well planned out or cleverly done, they just have to use footage of sad children or animals in pain to turn your heartstrings. Media can also use similar things. If I make a story of an old woman slowly dying I don’t particularly need to write it excellently for you to feel bad about it, it’s something everyone can empathize with. In any case, SU fans who love the show are people who do find the story and characters of the show well done. fans like Pieguy might recognize the flaws but they still find most of the writing good, which is why he and others feel for the story and characters. If they all agreed that the story was badly written and the characters where wasted, the fandom wouldn’t be as big. SU fans do think the show is great in all aspects, and if they feel that way is fine. But I think it’s flawed in a lot of aspects, and that’s why I don’t like it anymore. I loved the first 2 seasons because I liked what they where doing with the story and characters, and that’s why I cared on the emotional moments from those episodes. I disliked what they did from the other seasons onwards, and that’s why I didn’t feel any emotion from the story, and why I stopped caring. In shows, emotion can be linked with quality
@undergalaxy775
@undergalaxy775 4 жыл бұрын
@@FlippySuper well if you ask me, your movie needs to have more than just a grandma slowly dying for me to feel bad, because it's fiction. Charity events are another case, givem how they atleast seem real. That's why I feel like emotion and quality go together. And just like emotions, quality is subjective. So I'm not dismissing you for not liking the show, I'm just explaining you why liking it for the emotion is perfectly rational

Maybe they could have emphasized it more but Steven is not "fixed" after the hug, the issues Steven is dealing with throughout Future aren't things that can be fixed after a single event. By exploring Steven's psychological issues the way they did, they also basically made it so that there's literally nothing that could be done in one episode that would "fix" him. The finale and the hug doesn't resolve any of Steven's issues, what it does is it shows Steven that he can talk to people about all these negative feelings without it pushing all his loved ones away. Anything else they could have done that was like "oh Steven's all better now" would have seemed shallow to me. The finale was just the first step for Steven towards getting better in a more healthy way.

I thought ending with the hug made so much sense. I feel like their are different types of Steven Universe fans. The ones who enjoy the darker themes and the fights, and the ones who enjoy the themes and the extremely emotional impact that this show has. I am my monster is my favorite episode ever in Steven Universe. Did I think it felt big? No, definitely not. But did it make me sob? Hell yes. And I don't cry for Movies or TV shows so this proves just how special it was to me. I knew after watching it most people would think it wasn't the big final battle they were hoping for, but clearly the whole theme of this epilogue was mental health and how to deal with it. And coming from someone who deals with many mental health issues like depression... This show really helped. By just showing me that a lot of the things like pushing people away and faking it till you make it can lead to deadly consequences. People were all worried about the chest and all these other questions, while I was just worried about the boy's mental health. I get the criticism though, but I don't think that a big final epic fight was what Rebecca Sugar ever had planned. Every monster Steven dealt with ended with an emotional impact, except Jasper really. But even her Arc ended pretty emotionally. This is just my opinion though. I feel people aren't focusing on the parts of the show that you should be. It was a beautiful way to end the show. And help me move on from it. It's done so much for me.... But again, I guess I understand the criticisms if you look at the show from another perspective. I love this show and will defend it till I die but I do know it has flaws.... Yes I choose to ignore them. (Jk I know there are a lot of flaws)

Maybe having him attack little homeschool and having the gems defend against him as they tried to get through to him would have made it more satisfying. Like seeing what's happening in his head and using the diamond's powers to communicate that fighting him is only re-affirming that he's a monster in his eyes, escalating the situation. Maybe the conversion back into normal steven was gradual so that he spoke with them while still remaining partially a kaiju could have delivered a more emotional punch. they could still have their emotional lines that were in the hug, but steven is visibly struggling with his mental state as he hears them, fluctuating between forms, and then connie's is the nail in the coffin that restores his stability for the moment.

@@jtlovescodelyoko I have to disagree. Steven Universe is not really original. Adventure was more original, and frankly better written than Steven Universe.

Smart Alec Cause there are tons of people praising the spit that comes out of Rebecca’s mouth. The show is below average, it copies so many cliches that the show isn’t even original. Things are poorly explained, or plot holes left in. Why does no one fuse to beat spinel? Why do the gems just watch her attack the planet and do nothing. They used to be a warrior race now they are just are all pacifist just like that? This show is frustrating and bad.

@@rolan4dezwinz381 Your opinion is yours, but if you look back on it, the Gems' go to solution is pretty much never fusion. They didn't do it against Lapis. They didn't do it against Jasper and Peridot. They didn't do it against the Diamonds. It isn't even clear what you mean by watching "her attack the planet and [doing] nothing." Are you referring to the end where everyone in Beach City gets saved? Are you referring to the beginning? Again, whatever your opinion is, the goal is not to invalidate it because your opinion is valid.

Ghost Channel Oh right the crystal gems are all also called the gem. I meant the entire Gem species, they were all just watching spinel attack everyone, the planet and they all just watched her do it. None of the gems were like “I don’t know who she is, but let’s fuse and beat her.” The warrior like race all become pacifist in a few years, then they all ran from her. No one besides the crystal gems made even a attempt to stop her. That’s another thing I dislike the writing, she took a conquering race and turned them into pacifist?! How!? They been doing this for who know how many centuries, and yet just cause Steven says “conquering bad” they are all like “oooo, ok. We will stop”. Just like that. And don’t say the lapis, cause they are the single outlier to this and they backed down easily to someone with more training, where is the fighter spirit. I just can’t. I’m happy the show is over, stuff like that aggravates me. Atleast the first 2 games are good.

@@rolan4dezwinz381 Part of art is how one connects the dots. To address that larger question, downing the scope to an individual level helps. Take Pearl, for example. It's explicitly stated that Pearls do not fight. Peridot even finds the idea amusing. This brings up a question. Is Pearl fighting for Rose the result of Pearl desperately wanting to serve her diamond, the result of hard work, or is it an innate Gem sense that she merely tapped into? This drastically affects how the story is perceived. Two of those leads to Pearl's fighting being more functional than individual, but the other leads to an anomaly. Pearl almost entirely loses her primary function. Like she constantly says, she serves no one, which is the opposite of what a Pearl is made to do. She changes her primary function. If Pearl can change her function, how far can any one gem go with that? Now, instead of using a gem that has been part of a different era and has thousands of years on Earth, let's switch to Peridot. Peridot, in pretty much record time changes allegiances. Unlike Pearl whom, by any interpretation was serving a diamond, Peridot rejects serving her diamond altogether, and she even tells her off. This should go against every fiber of her being. She is designed to create machines for the Diamonds, and for a gem that developed on Homeworld doing just that for Yellow for practically her entire existence, to change in less than a year is a fascinating development. Peridot still builds, but she also enjoys art and Camp Pining Hearts. Is this an extension of her primary directive, or is this the result of Peridot also becoming something more than what she was designed to be? Last stop, how the gems react to White Diamond's Pearl. The gems are visibly excited to see Blue, Yellow, and "Pink." Why is this? If the reaction was only Pink Diamond gems, it would make sense that they would be happy to finally see the diamond they serve "alive," however this is not quite the case. All of the sectors react. Does this have to do with the stability of the system they are apart of, or does it have to do with the fact that they do not embrace the system? One thing is clear, during the movie, none of the Gems look sad during Steven's broadcast to the universe much like Pink's return. It is when White's Pearl shows up that they immediately fall in line. Is this to show that they follow the system out of fear, or is it to show that they just are returning to business as usual. It would seem the show tries to nudge the viewer towards the first one which leads to the consensus that Gem's may be MADE to carry out the Diamond's rule, but they do not WANT to do so. However, all of these are lost if one interprets everything Gems do based solely on function. If function is the main drive, then the show makes no sense. It makes no sense for ANY era gem to suddenly abandon their primary function, and even after the Diamonds disband the empire, they should all still want to serve them unconditionally. However, if the Gems work on a strictly personal basis, then it would make sense that the Gems want creative freedom over strict function. It would make sense that the Gems prefer themselves as their primary directives. Neither interpretation is WRONG, but they both are very different views.
