It’s like one of the craziest twists but a lot of people speculated that Rose was Pink Diamond the entire time. You will get way more explanation in the next bunch of episodes cause they really focus on kind of explaining the entire thing. Including why Pink decided to be known as Rose Quartz.

i love this episode because it recontextualises SO MUCH of the series before it, pearls relationship with rose, that felt far beyond simple love/admiration, Steven's INSANE trove of powers that exceeds any other gem or fusion we've seen(possessing people, bubbling the cluster, healing powers, communion through dreams, ETC) the confusion of how exactly Rose shattered pink diamond in the first place, this single episode alone changes so much about how you view the series on a rewatch. ALSO the offhanded comment by Uncle Grandpa when he looks at Steven's gem and says "yeah you're gonna wanna polish this thing about twice a year" which is the standard procedure when cleaning a DIAMOND SPECIFICALLY

My favorite bit is, to my understanding, the earliest foreshadowing in the series. Ronaldo was looking at an upside down diamond symbol on a dollar bill and said "I know what the diamond means... Polymorphic sentient rocks! They're here to hollow out the Earth! It's part of the Great Diamond Authority! They’ll take on *any form* " this is literally the plot of the show, and the "any form" part along with the upside down diamond directly alludes to rose being pink diamond taking on a different form

So to answer your question pink diamond flipped her gemstone to face the front and formed the rebellion as her alter ego rose quartz and when it got to the point where the double life she lives as rose/pink diamond got too hard to keep up the lie she concocted this idea to fake her true identity pink diamonds death and for pearl to shapeshift into rose to make it look like she was killed but in reality she was poofed and she going forward lived her life as rose quartz and the events that followed suit will be addressed in the show
