His take on the BTS collab was factually incorrect. Members of BTS said in 2016 they really wanted to do a song with Coldplay, that’s what sparked the collab. It wasn’t Coldplay approaching them first.

Very thoughtful and intelligent comments here by Steven. The elephant in the room, though, is the entrance on the stage of illegal downloads and then streaming services such as Spotify. Album sales have plummeted since he started out in the early 90s. As always, a development like that cuts off the bottom half of the economic pyramid, which means record producers are less inclined to take a chance on a new and untried artistic development by upcoming musicians. The ROI just may not be there and so the investment becomes too risky. This is the most important reason why it's harder to become the next Bowie or Prince, and why the audience is sadly left with music "made by millionaires who are nearly twice your age" and engineered for "building cheaper thrills," as Steven himself has so aptly put it.
@Staygoldfarms
@Staygoldfarms 2 жыл бұрын
Agreed! The music is done and sitting on shelves. These music millionaires are picking the next pop star and giving them the song to sing. Producing the heck out of their vocal tracks and spending millions to get it out for the public to listen and see them in the media. It’s all about building a persons brand rather than good quality music. The revenue streams from clothing to makeup. Making people their cash cow.

Greatly enjoyed your interview with Steven, for which you deserve much praise. I considered subscribing to your channel afterward, but when this clickbait trash title/thumbnail is the first thing I see on your profile, I'm no longer interested. What is disruptive about pulling the most potentially controversial piece out of a deep and engaging 2-hour conversation and slapping a TMZ-style headline with the name and photo of a more popular mainstream personality to game the KZbin algorithm for fleeting views? This is the opposite of disruption, and the opposite of many of the points that were raised in your conversation with SW about personal integrity, going against cultural norms, winning in the end despite doing things the "wrong" way, etc... This kind of gimmick is more akin to the criticisms levelled at Coldplay than allowing one's work to succeed on its own merits as in the cases of SW, Radiohead, Pink Floyd, etc..., as discussed in your conversation. I suspect whatever attention you draw to your channel from this tactic isn't worth the lost interest and goodwill from those who actually enjoyed the heart of your work in the larger interview. With that said, only you know what's best for your work and your channel. Much respect and best of luck to you, but I'll be seeking out content (theres that dreaded word again!) that resonates with more integrity for me. Cheers. :)

The notion that Chris Martin is solely responsible for the direction and sound of Coldplay is misguided. Yes Chris provides most of the songwriting power but the rest of the band contribute too hence equal songwriting credits and to an extent, equal pay. Will, the drummer, is actually the ‘anchor’ or ‘boss’ within the band who probably has the biggest say in the decision making rather than Chris. Coming from a diehard Coldplay fan, it’s hard to disagree with a lot of what Steven says (and he is certainly not as cynical or snide as the title suggests) but Coldplay are a 4 man band, not a one man show

The one artis mentioned here I believe is way overrated is ELTON JOHN, he had his peak in the 70's and never really recorded anything of quality to match his early work. One more thing about ELTON JOHN, let's not forget that unlike the others mentioned who wrote most of their materials Elton 100% depended on BERNIE TAUPIN, again, overrated.

Many things wrong with this. BTS approached Coldplay and said they dreamed of collabing with them. Not the other way around. Chris never even walked a red carpet with his ex wife, he lives a very low profile life outside of concerts. Only one member has an indivdual social media page and that’s Guy berryman not Chris. For you to suggest he wants to be the center of the universe is ridiculous.

Well said! Even while he's dating Dakota he isn't vying for everyone's attention about it. When he's doing Coldplay he is really marketing it as the face of the band for obvious reasons, but outside of that he isn't a pompous celebrity walking red carpets. He often takes a backseat during their hiatus from touring. We hardly ever hear about him during that time. He also isn't dressing extravagantly or creating headlines like stars of the past. Coldplay have adapted will and they write for both old and new fans contrary to what these experts think.

However, replace the name “Chris Martin” here with “Steve Wilson” and what he says would apply the same and still make sense (minus marrying a movie star, etc. which was a pretty dumb point, anyway). Wilson may be less known, but his music has shown no less abundence of ego at times and certainly contrivance, to the point where it made this Porcupine Tree fan into a loyal fan of albums he re-masters or produces but someone who either avoids or yawns majorly at his often cringe-worthy solo releases. This could just as easily be Steven in a therapy session, talking about his own insecurities. Pot, kettle, and so forth.

An abundance of ego is a different thing to wanting to be at the centre of things, which is what he said about Chris Martin. It's a given that all great artists have a strong ego - you'd never do anything great otherwise. And to quote the memorable Skyhooks lyric, "ego is not a dirty word"!

Agree with everything Steven says regarding Chris Martin and "The centre of the Universe". Don't agree with him as regards Coldplay being a cool band, or that they ever wrote any great songs. Just can't listen to them, as the music makes me cringe. Don't know if Steven was aware of David Bowie being approached by Chris Martin a lot of years back, asking Bowie if maybe they could do something musically together? Bowie,s reply was very telling.... "Well, you,re last album wasn't very good." This was a Chris Martin interview l seen years ago, and this story was related by Chris Martin himself. Martin,s reply was also telling.... "With Bowie having told me that, l realised, well, that's the level you have to get to, in order to do an album or single with David Bowie." For me, having watched this, it wasn't just a case of Chris Martin having to up his game in order to reach Bowie,s level. It was more a case of... Sorry Chris, you never will. And this is what Chris Martin didn't understand. David Bowie didn't want to touch or be associated with Coldplay, in the same way as he had with Queen.

Bowie didn't say 'your last album isn't very good' all he said was the song offered to him is 'not one of your best work isn't it?' Stop twisting stories just because you don't like Coldplay's music. You can froth in the mouth all you want but Yellow,The Scientist and Clocks are all gaining modern classic status and Viva La Vida will be as well. Hating a band as a part of your personality is MAJOR CRINGE. I bet you don't have many friends because of this trait. Snobby music nerd like you is a turn off.

I love Steven Wilson's music, in two days actually I will hear Porcupine Tree live in Chile, but I don't understand why people (Wilson including) says that your music is good if you are low profile, unknown person. You have to be a nun of music to be a good musician and made a definite type of music, if you are out of all that, you are cynic and you music is losing credit. No! Everyone is free to make the music that wants to do, and if your music is massive listened you become famous. This is like say that a football player have to play whit smart passes and intelligent play to be a good player, and if he becomes a dribbling player whit triks and golden globes, he is not too good like before.

You're not really getting the point... It's about sacrificing the integrity of your music/art to appeal to a certain/wider audience, and be very conscious and delibrate about trend and all that... i agree with Steven that i think Coldplay is a case where most of the music didn't come from the art/music anymore in the first place...

Steven love your own music...but as far as your thoughts on other music and musicians throughout this particular YT semi-rant..what a rambling crock of shite. Your focus is as narrow as a top ten playlist...your trying to form some linear logic to the development and quality of musical history and accomplishments is futile, it is akin to conspiracy theories... there are so many more extremely strong influences on the developing world of "rock" music that to try and pin Chris Martin into an Ed Sheeran/ Thom Yorke conglomerate is unnecessarily beyond insulting. This rant is a clear example of why people need to vent then set the vent aside for a while and come back to it before sending it to the world. Thx! Rock on

This is difficult because I think he's right to a large extent with regards to the multi-faceted nature of the role of a musician nowadays, but he's just a bit out of touch. Since grunge, you had nu metal, then indie, then emo, then hipster rock, which all got huge followings and controlled the zeitgeist to a large extent, including fashion and art. It's hard to say what the current 'thing' is, but unusual artists are still breaking into the limelight and shaping how music sounds in unexpected ways - Billie Eilish would be an important example. Everything from production to singing style was completely different to anything in the top 100, and yet it became an artist to follow and emulate in its idiosyncracy.

@@planeguy95 I haven't really followed Radiohead throughout their career, but we can safely say that the artistic heydays of Muse and Coldplay are well behind us. Muse's first four albums are among the best I own, but each album after that got a little worse. Their latest is just terrible. They've followed the same path Wilson describes about Coldplay in this video. I can't blame them for staying relevant and raking in the cash, but that's the reality.
