About Steven wilson's changing style of music,he said himself about that in the Rolling stone interview- '' I think the responsibility of every true artist is ultimately to be selfish, to make something that they themselves believe 100 percent in and not to ever think about what other people want from them. No one is going to tell me that Picasso painted paintings to please other people, I don’t believe it! I think great artists make things in a very selfish way, and lesser artists think about their fans and try and provide something to please them. For me, those people are not really artists, they’re entertainers. I don’t mean that in a patronizing way; I have a lot of respect for people who can entertain. But being an artist is all about being selfish, about being true to yourself.'' Pretty much sums it up. One of the reason why I love steven wilson

Joni Mitchell had a similar quote: "That's one thing that's always, like, been a difference between, like, the performing arts, and being a painter, you know. A painter does a painting, and he paints it, and that's it, you know. He has the joy of creating it, it hangs on a wall, and somebody buys it, and maybe somebody buys it again, or maybe nobody buys it and it sits up in a loft somewhere until he dies. But he never, you know, nobody ever, nobody ever said to Van Gogh, 'Paint a Starry Night again, man!' You know? He painted it and that was it." Miles of Aisles (1974)

His very creative and unique approach to the content he's creating needs every outlet available. It's not just the song in itself; it's how he changes his work up over the years, it's the audible influences and tributes he freely and lovingly writes into his work. Musicians can coexist in Studio yet people can barely tolerate each other in 'Life', and we also barely get along or treat Mother Earth w/very little Respect, just like people do when they hate someone or shame someone 4 being 'different', to be honest there isn't much that shocks me anymore, and it's sad people say Steven copied this or that, let's see those hater's collaborate some Original music... Not Easy, and Our Radio's are already spewing mostly 99.999% useless sound labeled as 'musical creativity... a monkey could play guitar and so can I, but I'm far from good enough to make a career/multiple albums, so lot's of people dream, but only Original talent keeps itself as a timeless classic:)

I love prog for the complexity and the odd meters and the epic long tracks with lots of different movements, but what has always made Steven Wilson's work stand out is that underlying it all has been a masterful pop sensibility with great melodies, hooks, and melancholy beauty woven into his music. This is in the grand tradition of what British Pop music USED to be. That golden era between 66 and 86 where experimentation was rife. The problem now is that Pop music is in the gutter creatively. This harks back to the early 80's when pop was a glorious melting pot of styles. Wilson has always been a fan of the era. Go listen to The The, Bauhaus, banshees, Tears for fears, Julian Cope and the greatest of them all, the transcendent genius of XTC. As XTC said 'This is Pop', but its bloody good pop.

One of its kind 2) Versatility comes with Courage ("artists make music to please themselves, entertainers do it for others") 3) Biggest Example is David Gilmour. For Pink Floyd he used to shift to Psychedelic Rock but when he used to go solo his soul lied with Blues. 4) Criticism is coming from those people who have branded him as "The Prog God". 5) Let the entire album release. Let it all make sense. 6) The fact that he has been severely affected by the death of Bowie and Prince is pretty evident.

It's pop in the sense that it uses pop-ish claps and looks so I don't blame people for thinking that. Steven Wilson is just experimenting with that pop idea. I'm not a big fan of this song either, but let's be real. It uses elements of pop (mostly the beats, as you mention), but the scary creepy tone, the dark melodies, and the fact that it goes silent for more than a minute makes it impossible to ever get closed to be accepted as a pop song. It is definitely not mainstream because the melodies are too complex.

Such a beautiful song. I love it's sensual darkness. It's mesmerising. Thank you for this upload. Best wishes.

I'm only seeing comments saying 'fuck people saying this is mainstream' but no actual comments saying this is mainstream...

They're probably way down at the bottom, among the first coupla dozen comments, all written by nitwits who rushed here to trash the video because it doesn't run 20 minutes and sound exactly like Anesthetize.

They are probably all projecting.

Yeah - I almost want to post comments on those people - like "Um, everyone seems to love it, and nobody is calling it whatever it is you are saying they are calling it" but then again - maybe they're just like - advertising bots or something? IDK. Or maybe people see the article where Steven Wilson says the album is going to be more "Pop" - and since they expect people to react negatively to that sort of thing - they just blindly start posting weird times.

Yeah dude. There are even occurences where somebody wrote " Fuck off those who think this is mainstream" which then got a long-winded reply from somebody confirming that the song is indeed not mainstream. They disagree, but agree. Are these bots trying to distance this from mainstream, because...it's bad?
