Why do people insist on wasting oil? Three hole oil change is wrong. Read your service manual. The transmission oil is not ready to be changed at the same time as oil and primary....just saying. This is a waste of oil and money
@sikbaggers
@sikbaggers 6 ай бұрын
Are you drinking the oil after you change yours? oil is 5k, primary is 10k and transmission is 20k...I know math is hard but hang in there and I'll walk you through it tiger ...... first time is an oil change (5k), second time is oil and transmission (10K), 3rd time is oil change(15k), 4th time is ALL 3 (20k) rinse and repeat. Hence " 3 hole oil change". jesus this is the shit I wake up to...do better.

Clean oil is some of the best insurance toward mechanical longevity! Lots of evidence out there that HD's maint intervals for the primary/tranny are too loose. 3-hole it baby!!

I live in the southwest dry, dusty, and extreme heat. For example, it’s 09/30/24 and it’s 107 degrees. Yesterday, it was 114. So, the extreme temperatures where I live causes the oils to lose their “flavor” quicker. I do the 3-holes changes ( for the most part) on my own. I’m doing one this afternoon, it was 72 dollars total for the fluids, filter, and rings. Nothing wrong with completing the 3 hole more than HD says.

This was a great step by step video. A 3 hole change in Canada is North of $500 at the dealer, and I’ll never have to pay for that one again. I found Amazon was a great source for “an oil change in a box”, so $200 and a little video time in the shop was a much smaller pill to swallow. Thanks for all you do!!

Tip for the oil filter slipping. Mine did the same thing, I had some skateboard tape ruff on one side and peel adhesive on the other side. I cut strips of it stuck it to the inside of the oil filter wrench and used it. The ruff side will grip the filter and you'll be able to get it off without it slipping.

You're very welcome! I'm thrilled to hear that the video was helpful to you! Learning how to do your own oil changes can be a great way to save money and take more control over the maintenance of your bike. By doing the oil changes yourself, you not only save on labor costs but also gain a better understanding of your bike's needs. It's a valuable skill that can potentially extend the lifespan of your engine.

Excellent video really enjoyed your sense of humor. I’ve been riding motorcycle since 1972, have always done my own oil changes for the most part. I ride a 2000 road king and the first thing I do when I buy a bike is get a service manual if I can find one. The service manual has 5000 miles all three holes so that’s what I do.

Im not mechanically inclined, I bought every item you recommended here and changed my oil and transmission. (Only at 5k miles) My transmission oil was so clean for a sec I thought it was the oil I just changed but then I saw that you recommend doing that at 20k. Gotta still do my primary. This was a great video! Would like to see another done specifically on what else to check and service at 5 or 10k miles and also how to change spark plugs. Thanks Steve!

glad the videos helped and saved you some money! It wont hurt to do all 3 holes after the first initial 5k miles because you can really check for metal scraps in your oil and see if you have anything crazy going on in there. I do have a spark plug video I just put out about a month ago here on the M8's kzbin.info/www/bejne/fpaWmGWagr11fcksi=L_X60C692sVgNatS I haven't done a whole video on maintenance schedules but this link here will give a great idea of what needs checked and when www.stonewallhd.com/Service/Maintenance-Intervals

Ite. I just did an oil change on my Ultra Limited. I found that it takes 6 quarts exactly. I put 4 qts in the engine, and I did like you did with a graduated cylinder to get 28 ounces and 30 ounces, and then put the rest of the oil from THOSE containers in the engine. Took it for a short ride, checked the engine and trans oil, and the levels are perfect! Sure appreciate your video Sir! PS. I tried the foil trick on the oil filter. Still made a bloody fn mess on the garage floor. LOL

Hey robert thanks for the comment man and for checking out the video...yeah that tin foil trick can be a mess too..using one of those funnels designed for that is also kinda tricky to get in there...best way is to stuff a bunch of old rags in there and twist out as fast as you can and let the rags soak it up.

Steve AS ALWAYS...You nailed it. I do my own services as well and do it exactly as you just showed. The only difference is...I refuse to use a Harley Oil filter. Harley filters are made by FRAM (Death in a can) which is THE WORST oil filter there is. The only other option is to use a Chrome KnN. AGAIN like oil...thats another argument. Thing is...youde be surprized how many people dont know the difference in filters. Us Mechanics and motorheads know!!! Thanks again for the outstanding content.

Thank you Sir! Never really had an issue with the HD versions but I usually run the Amsoil filters...do you happen to know the efficiency rating at what micron level for the k&n? without me having to do a bunch of research lol let me know...all I could ever find on the HD is 5 microns but that means nothing to me if it doesn't tell me an efficiency rating...like 90% efficient at stopping 5 microns? 70? who knows lol
@sirsloth8579
@sirsloth8579 2 жыл бұрын
@@sikbaggers ... I get what you're saying lol. But according to KnN... the efficiency rating for their filters depending upon the application is between 25 and 100 microns. The thing that I like about their filter is there is you can use conventional oil as well as synthetic And still have the same level of protection. I have been an auto technician for 45 yearsAnd I refuse to use a frame oil filter on my car or any for any car what alone on my sled. Working on cars over the years I have for the years I have done my research just like you with bikes and found that frame is the worst filter out there. The only thing that they have is a paper element inside inside and I lot of times the Element just decentegrates Leaving no kind of protection at all shouldn't at all in the element element after it disintegrates ends up in your engine With no way to filter it out.

Just purchased my first harley 2023 road glide coming from a metric 2004 nomad. Harley made it sound like rocket science to change the oil. They did say they would do the labor portion free for the first oil change so I may let them. But im a killer shade tree mechanic who actually enjoys a sunday morning oil change so I will be doing mine from then on. This video is great, I subbed, liked and saved this video for when it is time to do the changes. I'm assuming the oil type/weight is all the same for all 3 holes? I'll be sure to look in my manual, and I didn't know that there were different intervals, ill look closely at that as well. Excellent tips all around, this vid will make it a breeze. Looking foward to checking out some more of your videos.

The goal is to provide useful guidance and insights to make tasks like oil changes easier and less daunting. Hopefully, you won't have to resort to using a chisel to remove the filter..that really sucked but was a rare instance of an HD dealership over tightening the filter on a previous oil change. I've been on the fence about buying a Harley because of all the maintenance fee stories I hear about. This was a huge help to know doing it yourself is not a big deal. Now the other question is can I trust the engines to keep going? So hard to trust it when I see oil sumping issues and things like that.

Totally agree with you on Harley WAY over-torquing the oil filter. I did my first DIY oil change on my M8 last week. I found Teflon tape or something like it all over my drain plug and the oil filter was on so tight that my Harley oil filter wrench skipped off. I thought the wrench must be the wrong size. Nope, I had crushed the top of the filter to the point that the wrench was just spinning. Ended up using a shop rag inside the filter wrench, tapping it on with a rubber mallet, then using a breaker bar on top of my ratchet handle to get the filter loose. Then I spent five minutes getting the old filter off the wrench. Moral of the story: Harley needs to stop telling their wrenches to over-torque the oil filter. I bet they do that so people will bring their bikes in to the dealer for service.
@sikbaggers
@sikbaggers 2 жыл бұрын
Ive learned that the M8, for some reason, has a way of tightening itself over time too...not sure why...even bikes Ive changed the oil on and know I have not over tightened it, came back to me for the next oil change and was tight as shit...asked my buddy, a tech at HD, and he said the same thing..they all come back tight...so we get to deal with that now lol

Great video but I have a question. In the video you say to check the transmission fluid level while on the jiffy stand. Even the service manual says to check it in this manner. What do you do when there is no jiffy stand, such as is the case with a trike? The service manual I have is for trikes and even it says to check on the jiffy stand. ????

if youre dipstick doesnt have two check levels, on jiffy/upright..then you could purchase the digital dipstick from HD that shows the temp and the level www.harley-davidson.com/us/en/shop/oil-level-and-temperature-dipstick-with-lighted-lcd-readout/p/62700194A?srsltid=AfmBOorHuudoRMggs5GZs-3B0H6BVLuw6txsWY494WDDlmg1Nei4FY9bfas i dont know the year of your trike but this is for the M8, 17 and newer trikes

When checking the trans oil level the manual says to put the dip stick in and not screw it in. insert the pit stick until the threads touch.
@sikbaggers
@sikbaggers Жыл бұрын
From the service manual 1.Park motorcycle on a level surface on jiffy stand. 2.See Figure 1. Remove transmission filler plug/dipstick. Wipe dipstick clean. 3.Install filler plug/dipstick until O-ring contacts the case. Do not tighten. 4.See Figure 2. Remove filler plug/dipstick. Check lubricant level on dipstick. Proper oil level is between the Add (A) (1) and Full(F) (2) marks Im not sure what year of bike you have but this is for the 19' M8 but always go by what your manual says. Please make sure yours says not to screw it in and doesnt say do not tighten...huge difference.

Thanks for the very informative video. I am very relieved knowing that hd doesn't need all the money. I've been told that services for hd are very expensive. I would like to ask about what brand of jacks I need to purchase . I want a good one for safety, of course.
@sikbaggers
@sikbaggers Жыл бұрын
They can be pretty pricey yes and it is something you can definitely do at home. Youll need to purchase a few tools/jacks etc but you only to purchase them once and your set for the life of your bike or bikes. Doing oil changes on your floor with a motorcycle jack you kind of have to get creative...If you use a full on motorcycle jack I would reccoemnd this one amzn.to/3PO5heD or this one amzn.to/3D21Idh With this style you will need to position it where you can reach the drain plugs but also get a oil pan under your bike so that's where you need to get creative. But you can use the smaller scissor jack like this one amzn.to/3pCizA8 Now with this style I would not go putting the bike way up in the air...remember you only need to get the bike upright and there is room to get under there and get to the plugs with the tired barely off the ground. The larger jacks are great for doing everything else but oil changes but for this I would use the small one and put it more forward on the bike so it only lifts the front end slightly. Then you have room for your pan and hands to get the plugs. I hope this helps! Be safe!

hey glad to help and thanks for the comment...I normally dont dive off into "whats the best oil" conversation because everyone thinks their choice is the best choice lol ...what I can tell you is this and this is fact, no opinion...if you change your fluids when your supposed to you can run whatever oil you want. Most oils have additives packages added in for extreme conditions....unless you are riding i the dessert or or the Antarctica everyday you are riding in normal conditions. The key is not what you choose to put in its making sure you change it when you need to. With that being said I have ran harleys syn 3, redline, and amsoil...i have never noticed any difference in the operation of the bikes, or the break down of wear parts (excessive metal shavings in the oil) when using any of these oils. So which one is best? The cheapest one is the best. They all do the same thing. You will have people scream and yell about how great one product is over another, one shifts smoother than the other... im here to tell you, it dont! They all work great if you chnage it when you are supposed to. I am currenlty running amsoil because my buddy is a dealer and I get it cheaper. But if syn3 was cheaper I would use that. I hope this helps you and if you have any questions let me know.

@@sikbaggers Now this was the perfect answer i was looking for. Thank you so much. When i got my 1k done @ dealer they put Syn3 in all 3 holes. They did say if you do more 2 up riding to change transmission to the Gear oil. I was thinking about doing that myself. Any answers on the Gear oil from Harley? I would like to order straight from Harley website but they only have kits that put the gear oil in both primary & Trans. Dealer said they wouldn't recommend putting gear oil in Primary. Again thank you for the help. Love the Channel and your videos are hands down the best!

You explain everything in so much detail and it's enjoyable to watch all your how-to videos. Well, I did I bought a Road King for Christmas and traded in my Dyna. My question to you is I bought the 5 oil changes when I purchased it. My thinking is, it's under warranty so they can look the bike over and fix things as I ride it, I always after the warranty is over start doing everything myself. I always use syn 3 in all 3 holes, Harley dealer told me they stopped doing that and put syn gear oil in 2 holes, I hit 1200 miles and the first service is after the holidays should I tell them my way, or their way. Because I will have to do it that way? Your thought on the syn oil versus syn gear oil in 2 holes? Thank you, Merry Christmas!!!!

Just got a used 2017 Trike (Milw 8). Manual didn't come with it. Found a pdf, but not easy to navigate the document. This video is the best produced of all those I've looked at that might relate to my new (to me) bike. Greatest help were the links to Amazon parts. I looked forever for a reasonable priced engine drain plug O-ring so I wouldn't have to spend $6 for just ONE at the HD dealership. Thanks for taking the time to produce this video. Very helpful. BUT, I might have missed the part where you mention YOUR preferred oil. Is it the oil you used in the video, or something else? Brother, don't make me have to go looking for it. I'm on the wrong side of "older" and don't like to spend my limited time looking for things, when somebody already knows the answer. Thanks again.

Hey Jerry thank you for checking this out and im glad it helping. As we all know, not all synthetic oils are created equal..but no matter what oil brand you use will work IF you do regular maintenance on your bike, car etc... I've never seen any particular oil fail or cause issues down the line when changed at the proper intervals. Now with synthetics what you are paying for in the price differences are the additive packages that oil companies put in these oils..So they pretty much start with the same base oil and then add different additives to increase the output of the oil..Syn3, as used in this video is the oil that HD will use on your bike unless you request another brand or bring your own..such as Amsoil or Lucas...I've run Syn3 for years with no issues and also ran Amsoil for years with no issues...biggest difference is the price. Amsoil costs quite a bit more...I also have buddies that run the Amazon package of "Maxima Racing Oils" motor oil with no issues (the problem with that kit is that there is not enough oils in the kit) so you have to buy extra..so that being said its really in the routine maintenance side of things that cause failers ....people not changing their fluids when they should and the fluids are weak and don't protect the bike's components as they should. You can pick up SYN3 and AMSOIL at any harley dealership and here is the link to the amzn.to/3RxRTIF BUT remember that is not enough oil for your bike if you are doing a 3 hole oil change so buy extra so you have enough.

The o-ring kit has three o rings and the derby cover gasket ( HD part # 17369-06) and costs 5.95 at the local dealer. O-rings are HD part # 11105 and are $1.18 each if bought separate. A lot cheaper than having to redo due to oil drips.

Adding clutch fluid and checking the levels should be done with the bike in an upright position...its important to note that if you are going to be doing your service that it will greatly benefit you if you get a cheap motorcycle jack or even cheaper scissor jack so you can properly do the changes. You can add the required amount of fluid for a wet service according to your servicer manual and then stand it up and check the levels. You can always take some out with a turkey baster or sop it out with a paper towel etc..
